Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne
After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.
Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.
"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
"All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (90-93)A substantial cuvée from multiple plots. Fresh bright purple. Concentrated raspberry and bilberry, good acidity, no more than medium bodied but still with energy, redcurrant and raspberry jam behind. Drink from 2028-2033. Tasted: November 2023. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (87-90)Mature vines in the lower central part of Grèves, with all bunches destemmed, two weeks cuvaison, 35% new wood, still in barrel, bottling expected in March. Crimson red, a rather sombre nose, lacks life. The oak is currently much too powerful and slightly dries the wine. Dark red fruit some spice, and a touch of liquorice, but with a slightly bitter finish. In a difficult place at the moment. Tasted: November 2023. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (90-93)From Evocelles, En Songes, and below La Justice. 50% whole bunch vinification, 35% new wood. Fairly deep crimson. The stems do lift the nose, dark strawberry with pepper. Really significant weight behind, far from simple strawberry, with balanced tannins, enough acidity and very good persistence. The concentration hides the wood. Drink from 2029-2035. Tasted: November 2023. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (90-93)Laurent characterises Argillats as a hot and cold terroir. 15% whole bunch vinification, 3 barrels of which two new. Not quite so deep in colour and a little lighter in fruit, though the oak marks the nose, and the palate. Nonetheless, I think the fruit will fight through, and it has an appealing fresh red fruit quality. Drink from 2029-2035. Tasted: November 2023. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (91-93)80 year old vines in clay soil, a vineyard run by the Delaunay team. Destemmed 36% new wood, all destemmed. Dark crimson purple. The Chaponnières has a lovely bouquet of dense ripe cherries and a good fruit acid balance, I find this wine altogether livelier and more interesting than the Beaune Grèves. Drink from 2028-2035. Tasted: November 2023. |

Decanter (93)TOP VALUE This wine has a ripe, plummy fruit aroma and earthy complexity that develop on the palate. Straight and a little strict, it will still drink on release but will be better in three to five years. The grapes come from a 2.54ha holding planted in 1971 and 1982, on limestone soils exposed to the south, making this an exceptional site. |

Vinous - Neal Martin (92-94)The 2022 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Damodes 1er Cru is aged in 50% new oak and completely de-stemmed. This is pleasingly floral on the nose, with wilted roses filtering through the raspberry and redcurrant fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins and a keen line of acidity. This is very elegant in style, with a composed and transparent finish. What a lovely Les Damodes from Faiveley. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (91-93)One third each of whole bunches and new wood. A glowing fresh mid purple. Here we find the elegance that was lacking in the Marsannay, plus some oak which is integrating nicely. Good tension, a fresh enough acidity, dark fruit with some violets, and a long distinguished finish. Drink from 2028-2034. Tasted: December 2023. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (93-94)Sample taken from new and one year old barrel. A rich and even purple, with a dash of new wood. The wood gives an extra dimension which will need to integrate but the essential joyous nature of this hillside vineyard shines through. He thinks he has the best balance here since he started the exchange deal to get these grapes in 2015. Drink from 2030-2037. Tasted: December 2023 |

Vinous - Neal Martin (90-92)The 2022 Nuits Saint-Georges Village comes from two parcels, two-thirds from Les Lavières. This fragrant, Vosne-like bouquet offers pretty blueberry and black cherry fruit that seem to blossom in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied and incorporates the 30% whole bunches with style. It is very cohesive with a sorbet-fresh, live-wire finish, leaving a dash of residual white pepper to linger in the mouth. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (90-93)The provenance is Aux Jachées 60%, Chalandins and a smattering of Chaumes 1er Cru, prepared for bottling. 50% whole bunch, 50% new wood. A bright and even purple. The new wood integrates very well, with an impressive depth. This is work in progress that promises very well. A good weight of fruit and a high-class finish that persists properly. Drink from 2030-2037. Tasted: December 2023. |

Vinous (88-90)The 2022 Aloxe-Corton Village was partially affected by hail and is the only cuvée to include whole bunches, which works well on the nose and has more freshness than the Pernand-Vergelesses Les Fichets. The palate is medium-bodied with blackberry and raspberry fruit, fine tannins, and good tension on the finish. Delightful. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (87-90)Mid crimson, with very little nose. The is a wealth of red fruit, but then the tannins are rather dry. This cuvée is usually a little more elegant. The finish suggests though that this will all come together. Drink from 2027-2030. Tasted: October 2023. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (89-92)The first to be picked, which is unusual. A mid crimson colour with some dark raspberry and plum fruit, showing a bit more than the Chapitre. A succulent rich raspberry fruit on the palate., some tannins but nicely interwoven. The two Aloxe 1ers Crus seem to have traded places this year, and for once I have a clear preference for the Vercots. Drink from 2027-2032. Tasted: October 2023. |

Vinous (93)The 2022 Chassagne-Montrachet La Boudriotte 1er Cru has a crisp and precise bouquet, very focused with seamlessly integrated oak, crushed limestone and petrichor scents percolating through the yellow fruit. The palate is very well-balanced, with a slightly honeyed opening. It’s one of the richer cuvées by taste, though analytically, it has very good acidity and 13% alcohol. Fans out wonderfully on the finish. Excellent. |

Vinous (90)The 2022 Chassagne-Montrachet Maltroye 1er Cru, raised in one-third new oak, has a well-defined bouquet with yellow plum, jasmine and light brioche aromas. It will require a couple of years to absorb the wood. The palate is well-balanced with a subtle walnut note on the entry, quite linear in style, with stem ginger veins towards the finish. Impressive length, this should give over a decade's worth of drinking pleasure. |

Vinous (92)The 2022 Chassagne-Montrachet Les Caillerets 1er Cru has wonderful delineation and poise on the nose, real frisson, with yellow fruit, egg whites and wild peach. Love it! The palate is very well-balanced with a touch of reduction, elegant in style, perhaps needing more depth and grip on the finish. But this is very suave and nuanced. |

Vinous (91)There are just two barrels of the 2022 Chassagne-Montrachet Chenevottes 1er Cru, the Domaine's smallest cuvée. Ergo, it is raised in 50% new oak. This is relatively primal on the nose, yet to reveal its personality. Yet, there is plenty of concentration here with an underlying sense of tension. The palate is well-balanced, but as expected, it is oaky at the moment, and it will require 4-5 years to subsume that wood fully. I'll be cautious for the moment. |
