The Donatsch Passion Chardonnay 2022 is a masterstroke from the eminent Donatsch family's winery in the picturesque Malans region of Switzerland. Harnessing the unique terroir of the region's limestone-rich soil and cool alpine climate, this spellbinding Chardonnay is meticulously crafted from low-yielding Burgundy clone vines. The grapes are handpicked at optimum ripeness, lending the wine an exquisite balance between acidity and fruit expression.

A gradual, controlled fermentation in French oak barrels follows, fortifying the wine's profound depth and complexity. Maturation on lees imparts a creamy texture and enriches its layered nuances. Resplendent with alluring notes of ripe apples, crisp pears, and subtle vanilla, the Donatsch Passion Chardonnay 2022 exudes an elegant minerality. The finish is long, persistent, and endearingly refreshing. A firm favourite amongst true connoisseurs, this Chardonnay encapsulates the Donatsch family's relentless pursuit of viticultural excellence and passion for creating world-class wine.

Jancis Robinson (18)

Full bottle 1,697 g. From vineyards including the historic plots at Le Léon in Aÿ, complemented by Chardonnay from Le Mesnil-sur-Oger and Oger. Red wines from Mareuil. 72% Pinot Noir and 28% Chardonnay. Dosage 4.5 g/l, eight years sur latte, disgorged March 2019. 5,212 bottles. Long and racy. Bitter orange oils and raspberry-leaf tea, more than a little minty but with the cool-hit lift and bite of wasabi powder, fine-ground chalk and river pebbles, cumin powder, white pepper. Enormously complex but clenched as tight as a fist. White raspberries, grapefruit, redcurrants. Precision, finger-nail-pressed origami folds, so sharp the fruit has paper cuts. Exciting. Exacting. Tense yet creamy. Spice defines the finish and brings it to a close that feels like an unfinished poem. So you take another sip.

Decanter (93)

Made up, half and half, of base wine from the sunny 2018 harvest, and reserve wine from Rodolphe’s Perpetual Reserve which goes back to 1988, this is one of the most consistently excellent NV wines on the market. Its current iteration is especially impressive, floral, chalky, upstanding, and very complex; the palate sharing notes of dried apricot, plum and lemon pith with more developed intimations of sour honey and patisserie. An exemplary wine with real purity and precision on the finish.
