Dominio del Aguila Ribera del Duero Reserva 2017 (6x75cl)

Tim Atkin MW (96)

Produced in what Jorge Monzón calls the "tragic", frost-hit 2017 vintage, when yields were down 85%, this shows that, in the right hands, what survived was often very good indeed. Marrying Tinto Fino with 5% Monastrell and 2% Albillo Mayor, all of it aged in old wood, this is herbal, chalky and intense, with stem ginger and wild strawberry flavours, fine tannins and impressive length.

Dujac Chambolle-Musigny 2019 (6x75cl)

Burghound (88-91)

(from Les Drazeys, Les Argillières and Les Fremières). A ripe combination features notes of plum, spice and pretty violet and lavender nuances. There is both good detail and vibrancy while offering good length if only average depth at present. In sum, this is certainly attractive but not deep. (88-91)/2026+

Dujac Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru 2019 (3x75cl)

Wine Advocate (93-95+)

The 2019 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru is serious, unwinding in the glass with scents of raspberries, cherries, woodsmoke, orange rind and petals that are framed by a deft touch of new oak. Full-bodied, velvety and concentrated, it's a bit more overtly structured than the domaine's Echézeaux (which preceded it in this tasting), with a tightly wound core and chalky back-end grip.

Dujac Morey-Saint-Denis 2019 (6x75cl)

Burghound (88-91)

(from Porroux, Le Village, Clos Solon and Les Herbuottes). An appealingly layered nose reveals notes of various red berries, especially cherry, along with floral and warm earth nuances. The succulent, round and delicious middle weight flavors that culminate in a moderately firm and youthfully austere finale. This is sufficiently supple on the mid-palate that it could actually be approached on the younger side. (88-91)/2026+

2017

Faiveley Mercurey 1er Cru Clos du Roy La Favorite 2017 (6x75cl)

Wine Advocate (93+)

From vines planted in 1982 in the sloping, southeast-facing part of Faiveley's parcel in the Clos du Roy, the 2017 Mercurey 1er Cru Clos du Roy La Favorite offers up a more overtly oak-inflected bouquet of dark berry fruit, spices, incense and vanilla pod. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, layered and muscular, with ripe acids and an ample chassis of powdery tannin framing a nicely concentrated core of fruit. This shows definite promise, but it will demand some patience.

Hudelot-Noellat Clos-de-Vougeot Grand Cru 2017 (6x75cl)

Decanter (96)

Hudelot-Noëllat's 0.8ha of the Clos are made up of two parcels, both of them in the upper part of the grand cru. Intensely aromatic and sweet, this is the quintessence of Pinot Noir, with raspberry and wild strawberry fruit complemented by acidity and 40% new wood. Deliciously hedonistic.

Vega Sicilia Unico 2010 (3x75cl)

Tim Atkin MW (100)

Vega Sicilia Único Reserva 2010 (14%) Perfection is as rare in wine as it is in most things in life, but this is a stunning Único, reflecting the quality of one of the greatest vintages of the last century. Blended with 6% Cabernet Sauvignon, as it was in 2009, it's still a very youthful wine right now, with closeknit tannins, thrilling acidity, layers of spices, fresh earth, tobacco, red and black fruits, some oak sweetness and a wonderfully refreshing, leafy undertone. Simply stunning.

Burghound (88-91)

(from domaine fruit). This is aromatically similar to the Champs Royaux with a slightly more pronounced mineral reduction character. There is however better density and intensity to the focused yet opulent medium-bodied flavors that exhibit impressive power for a villages level wine on the slightly warm finale. Worth a look. 2024+
