Welcome to Saint-Estèphe, the historic Bordeaux appellation known for producing some of the most powerful and complex wines in the region. Located on the western shores of the Gironde, Saint-Estèphe is a renowned red wine appellation on Bordeaux's Left Bank that is celebrated for its Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot-based wines. It is the northernmost prestigious AOC in the Left Bank, and its soil is predominantly limestone-based with heavy clay. The wines produced here are richly colored, deeply flavored, and known for their longevity. Saint-Estèphe is home to some Second Growths and Third Growths, including two Super Seconds - Château Cos d'Estournel and Château Montrose, and other highly regarded wineries such as Château Calon-Ségur.

The 2017 La Haye is gorgeous. Soft, floral and refined, La Haye shows the more restrained side of Saint-Estèphe. Crushed red berry, spice and floral notes are all beautifully lifted throughout. The 2017 is classy and polished to the core, which makes it a total sleeper in this vintage. The blend is Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and, unusually, Malbec.Inc. VAT£156.80 -

The 2016 Chateau Laffitte Carcasset offers attractive cedar infused black fruit on the nose, hints of red plum following just behind, quite detailed with abundant fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp tannin that exert a gentle grip, a masculine Saint Estephe that is harmonious and focused, the finish testifying that just the right amount of oak was employed. The 2015 Lafon-Rochet has a lively, floral bouquet that opens enthusiastically with aeration to reveal blackberry, melted tar and just a touch of black truffle mixed with cigar box. The palate is medium-bodied, taut, fresh and saline, with pliant tannins and a composed, relatively fleshy finish. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins and a fine line of acidity, ripe and generous yet maintaining outstanding tension and revealing a judicious touch of peppercorns on the finish, which fans out gloriously.
