The 2020 Vosne-Romanée Village has quite a high-toned bouquet, though it maintains control, with macerated black cherries, bilberry and violet scents. The palate is medium-bodied, quite firm in the mouth, a pleasant saline touch but it feels just a little hemmed in on the finish. That should loosen-up once its has completed its élevage.

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (90-92)

A bright ruby purple. Like the Chambolle the bouquet is all about a primary energy. The Vosne is if anything a tad more precise. Also shows the oak a little more and an extra tannin. Backward, needs more elevage, but very promising. Drink from 2030-2036.

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (90-92)

More purple than ruby, with glycerol legs. Not much nose showing. A cool pure yet ripe dark red fruit, some strawberry, fills out the middle palate much more than the Chambolle, with excellent persistence Drink from 2028-2035. Tasted Nov 2024.

Burghound (96)

A gorgeously spiced and perfumed nose is intensely floral in character while offering up notes of both red and dark currant, sandalwood, exotic Asian-style tea and discreet dried rose petal nuances. The muscular yet refined big-bodied flavors exude ample minerality onto the powerful, focused and once again compact, focused and explosively long finish. This too is indisputably built-to-age and I wouldn't be surprised if it required fully 20 years before it is fully ready. In sum this Richebourg is one of the finest wines of the 2014 vintage.

The 2016 Richebourg Grand Cru is deep in colour compared to its peers. The bouquet is just stunning: laser-like focus of black cherries, bilberry, crushed stone and iris flowers that blossom with aeration, seeming to gain intensity with every passing moment. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin and perhaps more black than red fruit. Extremely well delineated with wonderful salinity, this begins to fan out on the finish. Then, remembering that it is just a baby, it tapers back in to remind you that it will need 10 to 15 years in the cellar before it reaches full flight. This is a fabulous wine. Tasted blind at the 2016 Burgfest tasting.

As it was from barrel, the cool, restrained and even more layered nose requires considerable swirling to progressively coax the exuberantly spicy aromas of red and blue pinot fruit that is liberally laced with a variety of floral elements to reveal themselves. There is excellent volume and richness to the sleek and refined yet powerful flavors that brim with both minerality and dry extract that helps to buffer the firm but not rigid tannic spine shaping the strikingly long and linear finish. This is brilliant but note well that like the 2019 version, it's going to require extended cellaring to realize its full, and considerable, potential.

Vinous - Neal Martin (96-98)

The 2023 Richebourg Grand Cru has a typical nose for this vineyard, backward and a little stern at first. Its tightly wound redcurrant, cranberry and black plum fruit notes become more open with acquaintance. Apparently, it was very open the previous day, but this is in a mood! The palate is medium-bodied with fine structure and a beguiling sense of symmetry from start to finish. This might be the most elegant Richebourg that I have encountered from Grivot at this stage. It's very poised with an extremely long aftertaste. This will require serious cellaring.

The 2018 Vosne-Romanée Aux Brûlées 1er Cru has a southern orientation, but Mathilde Grivot was surprised that it only reached 13.0° alcohol; this was due, she believes, to the rain before the harvest. It takes a little time to cohere in the glass. After a couple of minutes, it offers lovely red and black fruit intermingling with black truffle and damp earthy/woodland aromas, delicate and refined. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins, precise and focused. Not a Aux Brûlées of substance and density, but rather one of precision and focus. Excellent.

The 2023 Vosne-Romanée Aux Brûlées 1er Cru is a little taciturn at first, but it only takes a little aeration to reveal brambly red fruit, briar, black pepper and light graphite scents. This is quite complex and, like Grivot's other 2023s, very well defined. The palate is medium-bodied with a pleasing crunchy texture on the entry. Full ruby-red. Very primary, floral aromas of crushed dark berries and violet. Supple and densely packed but also tangy and penetrating. Captivating, complex cassis and black cherry inner-mouth perfume. Has the firm structure of the vintage without being hard. Finishes quite long and bright and solidly tannic. Should be a vin de garde. Grivot says a few of his '98 cuvées, including this one, should exceed his excellent '96s in complexity and volume.
