They are showing spectacularly now and I suspect they benefited dramatically from aeration. Finishes with very suave, even tannins and a suggestion of minty lift. Very classy juice. |

Wonderfully smooth on entry, then a bit reticent but fresh in the middle, showing good floral lift to the raspberry and cherry flavors. Really perfumes the aftertaste, but with its slightly edgy acidity this beauty will need time to open and blossom. |

Plush and spicy, showing good concentration and decent acid cut to the pear and mineral flavors. I wanted a bit more energy for Corton-Charlemagne. Javillier's vines face south and he lost just 20% of his crop to hail in 2013. |

Wine Advocate (90)Tasted blind at the annual “Burgfest” tasting in Bouilland. The 2013 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru La Grande Montagne has a lot of reduction on the nose, perhaps too much, occluding terroir expression and sense of place. The palate is concentrated with a keen line of acidity -- weight in the mouth here with plenty of citrus fruit and spice towards the finish. If it can shake off that reduction with bottle age then this could turn out to be a fine Chassagne-Montrachet. Tasted May 2016. |

Vinous (93-96)Elusive and ethereal, the 2013 Mazoyères-Chambertin captures the essence of this great site. Violets, lavender, sage, menthol and plums are all laced together in a deep yet weightless Burgundy endowed with stunning finesse and class. Today, the Mazoyères comes across as seriously tannic and closed, which is likely a good thing for the future. |

Wine Advocate (92)Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting in Beaune, the 2013 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Beaux Monts has a tightly wound bouquet, dark plum and raspberry fruit, a touch of blackberry, the oak nicely integrated although it is staying inside its shell for the time being. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red cherry and raspberry fruit, the tannins finer than I was anticipating, the acidity well judged as it segues into a backward but focused, quite structured finish. Christophe Perrot-Minot's Beaux Monts has very good potential. Tasted September 2016. |

Once again, 2013 was a difficult vintage for the winemakers of Burgundy, but those who were patient and meticulous produced wines of excellent quality. The spring was cold and wet which led to late and uneven flowering. Conditions worsened with a hailstorm in late July which hit areas of Savigny, Beaune, Volnay and Meursault in particular, but a warm and dry August helped fruit to ripen at a critical time. The best of the white wines are truly exceptional in 2013 due to their refreshing acidity which perfectly balanced the impressive purity of of fruit. While the reds were overall less acclaimed than the whites, they showed elegance and sheer drinkability due to their freshness and depth of fruit.
