Vinous (95+)

Healthy dark red. Brooding aromas of tart cherry stomp and red licorice; there's something cool and medicinal here that belies the sunny vintage. Wonderfully silky and savory on entry, then densely packed and almost painfully concentrated in the middle, showing a bulletproof quality to its flavors of red berries, minerals and rose petal. The explosive, slowly building finish saturates the palate with salty minerality. Still a total baby, this wine will need to be forgotten in the cellar for a decade. (Weber noted that this wine hasn't moved since the day he bottled it in early March.)

Tasted blind, Bouchard's 2015 Montrachet Grand Cru put in a fabulous showing, making my tasting note from earlier this year seem decidedly conservative. Wafting from the glass with a complex bouquet of Meyer lemon, mandarin, orange blossom, dried white flowers and toasted hazelnut, the wine is full-bodied, ample and textural, with an incredibly elegant, pure and precise profile. Above all, it's beautifully balanced, with the ineffable sense of completeness that distinguishes Montrachet at its best.

(no hail or frost here in 2015, according to Clair): Medium red. Musky, deeply pitched aromas of raspberry, strawberry and smoky, flinty minerality. Quite taut in the early going, even a bit tough, and not showing the vintage's fleshy side today. But this firmly structured wine finishes with palate-stimulating salinity and subtle length. I would not be surprised if this eventually merited a rating at the top end of my projected range.

One of the highlights in this range, the 2015 Beaune Les Avaux is sleek and expressive. Sweet red cherry, plum, mint and a kiss of new French oak give the wine its super-appealing, inviting personality. Like so many of these wines, the 2015 captures an incredibly appealing combination of deep, rich fruit and lifted aromatics. In other words, this is a quintessential 2015. - Antonio Galloni

The 2015 Clos de Vougeot is an impressive wine. Huge tannins give the 2015 much of its shape and sense of direction. Plum, crème de cassis, chocolate and lavender all develop in the glass. Ample and powerful in construction, the 2015 possesses very good depth, even if it can't match the pedigree of the Chambertin. This is another wine with a late malo. I hope to have a chance to taste it again from bottle. - Antonio Galloni

The 2015 Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru has an understated, pretty, quite mineral-driven bouquet; light rose petal and iris scents develop in the glass. The palate is very well balanced, offering edgy tannin, crisp red fruit (red cherry and cranberry) and an almost symmetrical, live-wire finish that is pure class. Superb - and the plus sign indicates my view that it will improve in bottle. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting.

Vinous (93)

(these 2015s were bottled in June of '17): Dark red with ruby tones. Very ripe, almost exotic aromas of black cherry, dark plum, licorice and menthol, with lower-pitched notes of damp earth and clove; less perfumed than the 2016 version. Compellingly rich and broad but showing a bit more alcoholic weight and warmth than the '16 (the alcohol here is 13.6%, vs. 13.2% for the earlier vintage) and already shutting down in the bottle. Finishes with broad, dusty, building tannins and strong medicinal reserve.

The 2015 Volnay 1er Cru Les Caillerets is the king of the cellar chez Clerget in this vintage, offering up a ripe but bright nose of Griotte cherry, ripe plums, dried flowers and caramelized citrus peel. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, bright and vibrant, with excellent depth and a tight-knit core, framed by fine-grained, chalky tannins that lend a stony quality to the lingering finish. The 2015 Meursault Village is showing very well, unfurling in the glass with notes of crisp yellow orchard fruit, Anjou pear, white flowers, honeycomb and hazelnut cream. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, satiny and pure, with beautiful balance, succulent underlying acids and an elegant framing of dry extract that lends a mouthwatering quality to the long, penetrating finish. Without either the strong cooperage or reductive signatures of yesteryear's Coche-Dury, it exemplifies the new stylistic direction taken by Raphaël Coche, and it's a terrific success, surpassing both the 2014 and 2013 renditions.

The 2015 Auxey-Duresses 1er Cru, which is a blend of 60% Breterins and 40% Les Bas des Duresses close to Monthélie, had received a bit of SO2 a week before my visit and was due to be transferred into tank for around two months. It contains 10% whole bunch fruit this year and sees 20% new oak. It has a sensual bouquet with black cherries, raspberry and confit fruit all with fine delineation. The tannins here are finer than the village cru as you would expect, the acidity nicely judged (3.4 pH) with a poised and tensile finish that delivers a welcome salinity on the finish. This comes highly recommended and is certainly one of the best 2015s that I have encountered from the appellation.

Perfumed, gentle texture, lots to chew on at the end but properly complex and serious. Pretty intense and chiselled. Relatively rich. Gives the impression of great care taken in vineyard and cellar. The 2015 Echézeaux Grand Cru is slightly darker in color than its peers. There is a fug of reduction on the nose that makes the fruit profile difficult to discern. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannin, quite masculine and surly in style, although there is impressive substance and grip on the finish. This is in an awkward stage, but I’m convinced it will coalesce and become much more coherent with bottle age. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting.

The 2015 Vosne-Romanée Les Suchots 1er Cru has a voluminous, intense, slightly feral bouquet featuring layers of red berry fruit and possibly just a touch of brettanomyces (which for me does not detract from the overall aromatic profile). The well-focused, medium-bodied palate offers supple tannin, a crisp line of acidity and sappy blueberry and wild strawberry scents toward the sleek, silky-smooth finish. Excellent. (20% of this fruit comes from the top of the slope, which Liger-Belair says brings limestone freshness): Bright ruby-red. Blackberry, roast coffee and smoke on the nose. Dense and round, offering a velvety texture and good stuffing for village wine. Very ripe but nicely leavened by smoky minerality. In a softer style, finishing with ripe tannins. This is almost ready to be racked; indeed, Liger-Belair planned to bottle it before Christmas.

(from clay soil at the bottom of the hill): Healthy red-ruby. Blackberry and black raspberry aromas are complicated by a gamey nuance. Tasted blind, the 2015 Volnay 1er Cru Les Santenots-du-Milieu offers up a deep bouquet of red-black cherries, spices, potpourri, espresso roast and subtle grilled meat. Heady, perfumed, flattering nose. Very rich start and refined finish with real neatness. Reminds me of the 2005 but with possibly more precision. Long.

Jancis Robinson (17.5)

Perfumed, gentle texture, lots to chew on at the end but properly complex and serious. Pretty intense and chiselled. Relatively rich. Gives the impression of great care taken in vineyard and cellar. Long with a peacock's tail on the end. Some liquorice on the end too – most unusual in 2015 burgundy. Very well done.

Jancis Robinson (19)

Very deep purplish crimson. Warm, ripe, expressive nose. Juicy and lively with great pace. Such a winner! More obvious fruit than Amoureuses. Super-juicy. Winning.

Vinous (95)

The 2015 Echézeaux Grand Cru is slightly darker in color than its peers. There is a fug of reduction on the nose that makes the fruit profile difficult to discern. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannin, quite masculine and surly in style, although there is impressive substance and grip on the finish. This is in an awkward stage, but I’m convinced it will coalesce and become much more coherent with bottle age. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting.

Vinous (94)

The 2015 Vosne-Romanée Les Suchots 1er Cru has a voluminous, intense, slightly feral bouquet featuring layers of red berry fruit and possibly just a touch of brettanomyces (which for me does not detract from the overall aromatic profile). The well-focused, medium-bodied palate offers supple tannin, a crisp line of acidity and sappy blueberry and wild strawberry scents toward the sleek, silky-smooth finish. Excellent. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting.

Vinous (88-90)

(20% of this fruit comes from the top of the slope, which Liger-Belair says brings limestone freshness): Bright ruby-red. Blackberry, roast coffee and smoke on the nose. Dense and round, offering a velvety texture and good stuffing for village wine. Very ripe but nicely leavened by smoky minerality. In a softer style, finishing with ripe tannins. This is almost ready to be racked; indeed, Liger-Belair planned to bottle it before Christmas.

Vinous (88-91)

(from clay soil at the bottom of the hill): Healthy red-ruby. Blackberry and black raspberry aromas are complicated by a gamey nuance. Plush and classically dry, with smoky and saline qualities and a touch of animal fur reduction that currently blocks the wine's fruit. This, too, will be racked soon.

Wine Advocate (93+)

Tasted blind, the 2015 Volnay 1er Cru Les Santenots-du-Milieu offers up a deep bouquet of red-black cherries, spices, potpourri, espresso roast and subtle grilled meat. Full-bodied, ample and sappy on the palate, it's rich but vibrant, with fine-grained structuring tannins that are beginning to assert themselves on the finish. Having drunk several bottles of this wine since release, the extent to which it's shutting down is clearly apparent, and at this stage, patience will be required.

We found the wines in 2015 very easy and forward to taste, with as much focus on freshness as concentration, so there wasn’t a complete break from the 2014s in that sense. The hope is that as the wines mature they will continue to show the balance and classicism they displayed from the barrel. Our expectation is that they will do so and the best wines will live for a very long time with a genuinely satisfying pattern of maturation throughout their life.
