Burgundy

When it comes to the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands tall as one of the most revered and sought-after regions. Renowned for its exceptional terroir and commitment to quality, Burgundy has long captivated enthusiasts with its exquisite and highly prized wines. Today, let us delve into the realm of the best and most expensive wines that Burgundy has to offer, a realm where true wine aficionados can indulge in the pinnacle of winemaking excellence.

At the heart of Burgundy's prestige lie its renowned vineyards, which have garnered global acclaim for their exceptional wines. The names that resonate in the world of Burgundy are Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Domaine Leroy, Domaine Armand Rousseau, and Domaine Georges Roumier. These vineyards have become synonymous with greatness, crafting wines that define elegance, complexity, and longevity.

Burgundy's most esteemed wines are crafted from two noble grape varieties: Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The region's red wines, made predominantly from Pinot Noir, display a finesse and purity of fruit that are unmatched. Vineyards such as Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, and Richebourg produce red wines that command astronomical prices due to their exceptional quality and limited production.

For white wine enthusiasts, Burgundy's Chardonnay-based wines are a true revelation. Vineyards like Montrachet, Corton-Charlemagne, and Meursault showcase the full potential of this noble grape, producing wines of unparalleled richness, depth, and complexity. These whites epitomize the artistry of winemaking, with each sip revealing layers of flavors and a harmonious balance between fruit, minerality, and oak.

In the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands as an epitome of elegance, complexity, and refined craftsmanship. Its best and most expensive wines are a testament to the region's unwavering commitment to excellence, terroir-driven winemaking, and the artistry of the winemakers.

(only 40% vendange entier, as with the Charmes-Chambertin): Full ruby-red. Vibrant aromas and flavors of blackberry, violet, licorice pastille, bitter chocolate and wild mint. Boasts compelling sweetness and texture, not to mention inner-mouth tension. Finishes with surprisingly sweet tannins and distinct minerality. Dugat noted that this wine started off hard but that the racking brought much more refinement.

The 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Petite Chapelle confirms all the promise it showed from barrel and ranks among the highlights of this year's collection chez Dugat-Py. Bursting with aromas of cassis, blackberries, smoked meats, truffles and loamy soil, it's medium to full-bodied, velvety but incisive, simultaneously impressively concentrated and stimulatingly vibrant, concluding with a long and sapid finish. This is the finest Petite Chapelle that I can remember tasting at this address.

Vinous (92-94)

The 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin Petite Chapelle 1er Cru was picked on the first day of harvest, along with the Charmes-Chambertin and Mazoyères. Containing 50% whole bunch, it is very perfumed on the nose, the most floral of Dugat-Py’s Premier Crus, but thankfully the gushing violet and peony aromas do not obscure the fruit expression. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, more understated than I anticipated after the aromatics. This ends up a streamlined Petite Chapelle of wonderful delineation and salinity (though maybe the Champeaux has a little more complexity overall at this early juncture). Not so Petite!

Bright, full ruby. Captivating aromas of cassis, game, mocha and brown spices. Sweet, concentrated and chewy, with powerful cassis and kirsch fruit flavors. Already displays wonderful inner-mouth aromatic character. Finishes with rather strong, slightly tough tannins that will require patience. This is quite impressive, but the 2000 version appears to have sweeter tannins.

Matured in two-thirds new oak, the 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin Cuvée Coeur du Roy has a very pure black cherry and boysenberry scented bouquet. The oak is neatly integrated and the 50% whole bunches impart a subtle undergrowth scent. The palate is packed full of sucrosity on the entry, slightly confit in style with macerated small black cherries, blueberry and a dash of white pepper towards the spicy finish. This will deserve five or six years in bottle, but there is very good potential here.

The 2020 Gevrey-Chambertin Coeur du Roy is also a notable success, unfurling in the glass with aromas of dark wild berries, spices, licorice and loamy soil. Full-bodied, ample and layered, it's as concentrated as ever, with striking depth and mid-palate volume, but it's also especially seamless and suave this year, reflecting Loïc Dugat-Py's shift toward gentler winemaking and more discreet élevage.
