Brunello di Montalcino

Wine from Montalcino was only appreciated and understood by locals as recently as the 70's, even though its warm dry climate has much in common with its famous Tuscan cousin, Chianti. However pioneering work from Clemente Santi with various clones of Sangiovese led to what was labelled Brunello di Montalcino. Changes in strict laws have allowed this region to react better to modern trends, reducing mandatory oak ageing from 4 to 2 years. As with Chianti small amount of foreign grapes can now be including within blends.

Very rich and plummy, with lots of mineral and floral undertones. Full, fresh and very powerful, with big, yet silky tannins and a long aftertaste of cherry and spices. Very, very long. Still needs time.--1997 Italian blind retrospective. Best after 2009.

Experience the sophisticated palate of the Campogiovanni Brunello di Montalcino Il Quercione 1997. This exquisite wine hails from the farmstead of Campogiovanni, located on the southwestern slope of the Montalcino hill in Tuscany, Italy. Produced by Agricola San Felice, the nimble mastery of this age-old art form is evident in each decanter. This Tuscan gem saw a vinification period in both stainless steel and oak vats, then laid down for a period of 36 months in Slavonian oak barrels, followed by refinement in the bottle for a further 12 months. The result is a paranormal blend of potency and elegance, twin harmonies crossing paths in a dance of taste tempered with time. Expect aromas of refined wood, enhanced by rich hints of spices and red fruits. Savour the Campogiovanni Brunello di Montalcino Il Quercione 1997 - an unforgettably harmonious swirl of tasteful complexity.

Deep, saturated garnet. Imposing aromas of cinnamon, nutmeg and spicy cedar yield to flavors of dark chocolate, roasted coffee and vanilla. Concentrated, polished and lush, but could benefit from a bit more focus. Finishes with fairly firm but somewhat drying tannins.
