Vinous (92)The 2018 Chianti Classico is a joyous wine that offers plenty of house signatures in a style that is quite classic (as opposed to the extroverted 2017). This can also be enjoyed right out of the gate, unlike the more serious 2016. Leather, tobacco, cedar and a good bit of Castelnuovo Berardenga savoriness/earthiness run through this super-classic, mid-weight Chianti Classico. |

Vinous (92)Ruby tending to garnet. Wonderful cocoa and cinnamon on the nose. Entry on the palate is pure and focused, with plum, cherry and clove enveloped by burnished tannins. Warm, generous and poised, this wine displays all the finesse that Castello di Ama is deservedly noted for. Note: starting with the 1999 vintage, all the grapes that had previously been reserved for the estate's single-vineyard Bertinga and San Lorenzo bottlings are now part of the regular Chianti, and it shows. |

Vinous (91)Bright medium-dark red. Fresh red berries, menthol and woodsy underbrush on the nose, with lively nuances of violet and cured tobacco. Pure, lively and fruit-driven, with nicely delineated flavors of ripe raspberries and mint. This juicy, intense wine boasts attractive sweetness and plenty of sangiovese character. A deft use of oak nicely frames the flavors, and the lingering finish shows an attractive floral character. One of the best Chiantis in '03. |

Matthew Jukes (19+)Federico thinks this is as good as the 1999 and the 1985. It is also the first vintage in which Federico’s son, Niccolò, handled the whole vintage himself. South West-facing, slow ripening, it sees the sun at the end of the day. Vinification is an extended maceration (25-30 days on skins), 50% large casks and 50% small French oak barriques for 18 months (fewer barriques than in time gone by). Very pure, clean and supple with richer, more refined tannins, there is a textbook nose here with thrilling red fruit and lovely, wistful cherry and cranberry tones over a deeper, darker core. 2019 was a more classic vintage – slow and steady, which is evident in this wine’s plushness. Picked end of September / early October, there is more elegance here than in the 2016, so it is more classically Rufina in its style. The acidity is perfectly balanced and yet this is a relaxed and honed wine entirely at odds with the blockbuster reds from further South. It is surprisingly forward, approachable, and gentle, but there is a lot of depth behind the scenes. As it opened up over the next few hours it became even more enthralling while always retaining its noble tannins and incredible balance. |

Few wines are as distinguished as the Vecchie Terre di Montefili Chianti Classico Riserva 1996. Each bottle displays the exquisite craftsmanship of winemaking, hailing from the heart of Italy's prestigious Chianti Classico region. Montefili, renowned for its commitment to natural techniques, cultivates grapes on high-altitude vineyards, forging a wine of unparalleled character. This 1996 Riserva is a consummate expression of Sangiovese, a grape that forms the backbone of Chianti wines. Vecchie Terre di Montefili Chianti Classico Riserva 1996 is an elegant, well-structured, and complex wine. It opens with beguiling aromas of ripe fruit, spice and leather, seamlessly merging into a palate highlighted by balanced acidity and firm tannins. The finish is captivatingly persistent, making this bottle truly one for the ages. Adhering strictly to traditional methods, Montefili shuns the use of chemicals in the vineyard and in the winery, unifying man and nature in every single vintage like the 1996 Riserva. |
