Tobacco, iron, herbs, smoke, dried cherries and menthol form a super-appealing bouquet. The tannins are silky, while the lively acidity ensures well-stored bottles will drink well for another handful of years. What a gorgeous wine this is.Inc. VAT£711.53 -

One of the many highlights in this vertical, the 1990 Sammarco has it all. Sweet, sensual and layered in the glass, with exceptional balance, the 1990 presents a compelling mélange of intense aromatics, silky fruit and phenomenal length. Now a mid-weight wine, the 1990 nevertheless has enough depth to drink well for another decade, perhaps beyond.Inc. VAT£284.40 -

The 1996 Sammarco is one of the many highlights of the 1990s. The tannins have now softened, but there is plenty of fruit left. Graphite, smoke, black cherries and plums add further layers of nuance. One of the more lithe, mid-weight wines in this vertical, the 1996 is all about grace. I very much like the sense of freshness here.Inc. VAT£177.60 -

Black color. Aromas of blackberries, minerals and mint. Very subtle. Full-bodied, with amazing concentration of silky tannins and a finish that goes on and on. Monumental Sammarco. Best ever for me. Best after 2005. 3,500 cases made.Inc. VAT£259.07 -
(6x75cl) 2005Wine Advocate (95)
This was a very difficult vintage for Castello dei Rampolla, with heavy rains that led to fruit loss and diminished yields for the top wines. Production of d'Alceo was severely reduced to a mere 1,000 bottles, and leftover fruit went to this wine instead, to its certain betterment. The 2005 Sammarco (a blend of mostly Cabernet Sauvignon with smaller parts Merlot and Sangiovese) is more tertiary in character, but it maintains its enduring freshness. Cool growing conditions have shaped a wine with complexity and elegance, although you don't get the power of a warmer year. This vintage is especially ethereal and offers a nice break between the more powerful 2004 and 2006 vintages. "Fashion fades. Only style remains the same, said Coco Chanel," Maurizia di Napoli Rampolla tells me. This is a motto to live by.Inc. VAT£846.72 -

A huge, powerful wine, the 2006 Sammarco is one of the highlights among recent vintages. The 2006 is deep, dense and concentrated, with massive tannins that are matched pound for pound by the intensity of the fruit. A huge, explosive finish rounds things out in style. Readers will have to be exceedingly patient here. There is no denying the 2006's greatness, though. Today, the 2006 is far more impressive than it was at the outset.Inc. VAT£159.86 -

Dark, rich and inviting, the 2011 possesses notable concentration and depth, with round yet powerful tannins and a surprising level of freshness for the year. A host of black cherry, graphite, smoke, plum and lavender notes accompany the powerful finish. It will be quite some time before the 2011 is ready to drink, but there is plenty to look forward to.Inc. VAT£521.98 -

The 2013 Sammarco is a stunning wine. Super-expressive aromatics make a strong opening statement in a wine endowed with myriad dimensions of nuance and complexity. The 2013 is deep and fleshy, with generous fruit, beautifully integrated tannins and exceptional finesse.
