White

Italy is home to a treasure trove of exceptional white wines, each showcasing the country's diverse terroir and winemaking traditions. From the cool Alpine regions of Alto Adige to the sunny coast of Sicily, Italy offers a captivating range of fine white wines that delight the senses and capture the essence of their respective regions.

In the region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia, renowned vineyards like Livio Felluga, Jermann, and Terlato produce exceptional white wines that are highly regarded for their quality and elegance. These wines, crafted from indigenous grape varieties such as Friulano, Pinot Grigio, and Ribolla Gialla, showcase crisp acidity, vibrant fruit flavors, and a unique minerality.

Tuscany, known for its red wines, also produces remarkable white wines. The vineyards of Antinori, Castello Banfi, and Isole e Olena are celebrated for their Tuscan white wines, which offer a delightful alternative to the region's reds. Wines like Vermentino and Vernaccia di San Gimignano exemplify the Tuscan terroir, with their refreshing acidity, citrusy notes, and an underlying richness.

In the Veneto region, Soave and Garganega are the stars of the show. Wineries like Pieropan, Suavia, and Inama craft exceptional white wines that showcase the elegance and aromatic complexity of the Garganega grape. These wines feature flavors of ripe stone fruits, floral nuances, and a vibrant acidity that make them highly versatile and food-friendly.

Moving south to Sicily, vineyards like Planeta and Donnafugata produce captivating white wines that reflect the island's unique terroir. Wines made from native grape varieties such as Grillo and Carricante exhibit a lively acidity, tropical fruit aromas, and a distinct mineral character that sets them apart.

From north to south, Italy's fine white wines offer an incredible range of flavors, styles, and terroir expressions. Whether you're sipping a crisp Friulano, a complex Tuscan white, an aromatic Venetian white, or an elegant Sicilian white, Italian white wines transport you to the sun-soaked vineyards and capture the essence of Italy's winemaking heritage.

  • Ornellaia Bianco 2014 (3x75cl)

    Vinous (95)

The 2014 Ornellaia Bianco is a real head-turner. A wine of tension, body and pure acid-driven energy, the 2014 bears more than a passing resemblance to the dry whites of winemaker Axel Heinz's native Bordeaux. Orchard fruit, lemon confit, mint and white flowers all develop in the glass, but the 2014 is above all else a wine of texture and intensity. The Ornellaia Bianco sets a new standard for what is possible for dry whites on the Tuscan coast. The Bianco is a blend of 70% Sauvignon Blanc, 15% Viognier and 15% Petit Manseng.

Enticing waves of perfectly judged gunsmoke reduction on the first nose, dancing across the palate and hinting at minerality rather than closing things down. Fragrant, joyous, chiselled citrus, lime, chamomile and lemongrass, with a slate scrape texture giving grip, depth and persistency. I've said it before, but I put this right up there with my favourite dry white wines, alongside Pavillon Blanc, Remelluri Bianco and Penfold Yattarna. This is winemaker Axel Heinz working his magic. • Ornellaia Bianco 2020 (1x150cl)

    Wine Advocate (94)

This wine that once featured Viognier in the blend, is now 100% Sauvignon Blanc. The 2020 Ornellaia Bianco is quite tropical and generous in personality with immediate aromas of papaya, Golden Delicious apple and crushed stone. The wine is beautifully textured and long lasting. I asked if Vermentino might ever feature in this blend (to bring in a Tuscan grape), but the answer is no for now. Vermentino already plays a role in the estate’s very popular entry-level Poggio alle Gazze dell’Ornellaia. Viognier is being cut because the grape is difficult, and if you don’t hit the harvest date just right, it can appear flabby and waxy.

  • Ornellaia Poggio Alle Gazze 2020 (1x150cl)

    Matthew Jukes (18.5)

One always has to wait a while for this wine to find its way onto the market after the initial flurry of wine broker activity, but I hope it will do so soon because this is one of the most sophisticated PaGs I have ever tasted. In fact, it is drinking rather nicely already with none the theatricality of bygone vintages nor any of the ponderous, demanding characteristics of some of the heavier, food-craving wines of the past. This is a civilised, hauntingly graceful and amazingly complex wine, which allows each of its component grape varieties the time and space to greet the drinker. This welcome restraint brings a new level of allure to Poggio alle Gazze, making it a must-buy for fans of Italian white wines. I cannot think of another vintage of this wine that will please many diverse palates with its finely balanced flavours.

    Vinous (91)

The 2018 Contrada Passochianche (PC) opens up slowly, both rich and fresh, offering notes of crushed hazelnuts, smoke, hints of custard and raw honey evolving into ripe yellow apple and sweet nuanced florals. This is silky and pliant, balanced by brisk acids and tart stone fruits, while salty minerals and hints of almond add further savory depths. Its concentration and persistence are admirable, as the Passochianche seems to slowly melt away from the palate, leaving a sense of structure along with hints of candied citrus. This is the first rendition of the PC, a single-vineyard Chardonnay that is fermented in neutral 20-hectoliter barrels and then spends six months refining on the lees.

    Wine Advocate (94)

Celebrating its 50th anniversary (1971-2021), the organic Pieropan 2021 Soave Classico Calvarino has a soft and richly textured side that is contrasted against the bright citrusy and mineral flavors that the Garganega and Trebbiano di Soave grapes are known for. This blend sees 70% of the first grape and 30% of the second, and the wine is aged in cement for up to 15 months. That's the special quality offered by Calvarino, a wine that is modern yet also rooted in local tradition. It’s weighty and textural yet full of vibrant energy, as floral-laced peach, honey and hints of buttercream give way to candied citrus and a note of brown sugar. This is unrelenting pleasure and opulence in a glass, as layer upon layer of contrasting sweet and sour notes repeatedly thrills the senses. It lingers for well over a minute with hints of tropical fruit and florals. The Amabile del Cere uses the same mix of Garganega, Trebbiano Toscano, Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Saorin as the Bianco Secco, yet it’s air-dried prior to vinification. It’s only produced in years when Quintarelli feels that the Bianco Secco is strong enough to stand on its own without the addition of the Amabile’s fruit. The 2012 should not be missed.

The accomplished team at Palmento Costanzo skilfully combines native Carricante and Catarratto grapes to yield an enticing aroma of citrus, pear and almond blossoms. On the palate, it manifests a stimulating minerality with natural acidity, exuding grace and longevity - hallmarks of its exceptional terroir. The rich complexity of 'Palmento Costanzo Etna Bianco Contrada Cavaliere 2019' attests to the meticulous craftsmanship and dedication to organic viticulture. Relish this exquisite Sicilian masterpiece - a testimony to the exceptional bounty of the heroic viticulture of Mt. Etna.

This is fresh and perfumed with notes of beeswax, spicy herbs and orange blossom. Nuts. Honey blossom. Beautiful fruit with savory undertones and wet stone minerality. Full-bodied, so persistent and complex with depth to the fruit and stunning acidity. The finish is long and linear, changing from mineral to a steely character at the very end. Beautiful as always. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold.

  • Pieropan Soave Classico 2016 (12x75cl)

    Vinous (88)

Bight pale straw. Almost pungent herbal nuances to the aromas of citrus fruit and apple. Then herbal and tactile with good weight to the orchard fruit and botanical herb flavors but comes across as a little simple, even a touch bitter at the back.

  • Pieropan Soave Classico Calvarino 2021 (6x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (94)

Celebrating its 50th anniversary (1971-2021), the organic Pieropan 2021 Soave Classico Calvarino has a soft and richly textured side that is contrasted against the bright citrusy and mineral flavors that the Garganega and Trebbiano di Soave grapes are known for. This blend sees 70% of the first grape and 30% of the second, and the wine is aged in cement for up to 15 months. That's the special quality offered by Calvarino, a wine that is modern yet also rooted in local tradition. You get a lot of food-pairing potential out of this bottle, whether it be sushi or roasted chicken. Production is 70,000 bottles.

Very ripe Soave here with aromas of dried pineapple, honeycomb, pecan pie, light toffee and a wealth of fresh and dried flowers flitting around the edges. Medium-to full-bodied with a lovely, long palate of fruit syrup and caramel. Seamless, tasty and long. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold.

    Vinous (94)

The 2019 Soave Classico Monte Grande lifts from the glass to show kiwi and crushed stone, along with pretty honeyed florals, in an airy and wonderfully fresh display. It’s intense and sharply focused, also quite mineral in style with orange zests and is salty to the core. This tapers off long, with residual acids keeping the mouth watering. It’s a classic in the making. Monte Grande is a blend of 70% Garganega and 30% Trebbiano di Soave, which is left to dry on the vines for an extra month after the first harvest.

    Vinous (94)

The 2012 Amabile del Cerè is flat-out stunning, boasting a seductive display of baked apple, fig paste, mint, spiced orange and hints of burnt sugar.

Italian grapes, such as Sangiovese, Cortese and Nebbiolo, produce many excellent wines. Yet they are not as well known or as widely planted abroad as their French counterparts. This is changing. Italian wine has gathered the strength and self confidence it needed and they are embracing their own viticultural diversity to great success.
