Vinous (90-92)The 2021 Beaune Clos de la Mousse 1er Cru comes from vines on a flat, dense clay soil, that are among the last to be picked. The wine has plenty of dark berry, cold black tea and light sea spray scents on the nose. The palate is medium-bodied with supple, plush tannins that lend this rondeur, harmonious with a sweet, almost candied finish. This will be more approachable than the Les Teurons, though it does not possess the same complexity. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (91-94)Medium deep purple. A little oak almost masking the slight reduction. Clears up and integrates, bringing a darker raspberry fruit. A certain sucrosity on the palate followed by the typical firm tannins which make this wine a vin de garde in most vintages. This is really quite backward and should keep well. Drink from 2027-2033 |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (90-92)Marconnets is a cooler, later site so survived the frost well. This is interesting and complex, not too deep but nuanced, with floral notes. A drier finish which is partly the stems speaking and which give also a useful tingle to rejuvenate the fruit. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-95)Their plot is protected by the wall, so a respectable crop. A brighter fresher colour. Bright red fruit with fair depth, much fresher at the finish, some pleasing crunchiness with the tannins nicely integrated. The crunch comes from the 100% whole bunch. Drink from 2028-2034. Tasted: November 2022 |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (93-97)A low key lemon and lime colour. Clean fresh and classic on the nose. A very typical fresh stony palate, lightly washed in citrus, with enough flesh to provide the body necessary for ageing, and a fine, long, persistently mineral finish. Drink from 2027-2035. Tasted: November 2022 |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (90-94)More crimson than purple, with a lifted nose with strawberry smoky notes from 50% whole bunch. Very pretty indeed. Let’s see if there is enough depth on the palate for grand cru. Yes, there is a delicious weight of cherry and strawberry fruit in the middle with an infusion of white pepper, but nothing dry on the finish. 4 stars if you like whole clusters, three if not. Drink from 2027-2032. Tasted: November 2022 |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (94-98)A bit better in yield as everybody protected their vines in Le Montrachet, with the 2016 disaster in mind. A fine mid lemon yellow, this begins discreetly but there is a wonderful concentrated intensity through the middle, a racy quality perhaps not quite there in the Chevalier. This time there is clearly a beginning, a middle and an end. Really enormously persistent and leaving a special taste in the mouth. I might just sip it to keep me company en route to my next tasting in Gevrey-Chambertin! Drink from 2030-2040. Tasted: November 2022 |

Vinous (91-93)The 2021 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Cailles 1er Cru has a succinct nose, the 50% whole bunches are neatly embroidered into the red berry fruit, with touches of iodine developing over time. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins, very harmonious, velvety smooth with deftly integrated oak towards the surprisingly concentrated, blueberry-tinged finish. One of the pleasant surprises from Bouchard Père this vintage. |

Vinous (90-92)The 2021 Savigny-lès-Beaune Les Lavières 1er Cru showed a little reduction on the nose, a mélange of red and black fruit, a hint of pain d'épices. The palate is well balanced with a supple, fruity opening, almost pastille-like with dark cherries, cassis and vanilla pod, smooth and quite sensual on the finish. Excellent. |

Vinous (91-93)The 2021 Volnay Les Caillerets Ancienne Cuvée Carnot 1er Cru has quite an airy bouquet, harmonious and demonstrating more concentration than the Clos des Chênes. The palate is medium-bodied with a fresh entry, orange zest and marmalade infusing the red fruit, quite linear with a tensile finish that lingers in the mouth. Very fine. |

Decanter (94)This wine is among the most successful Beaune premier crus in 2021. The aromas begin with mulberry and cassis fruit with notes of earth, menthol, and smoke. Rich and substantial on the palate, it features surprisingly full body, firm tannins and rewarding length. The grapes are from the Bouchard monopole of nearly four hectares within Beaune Grèves. In 2021, 30% were fermented as whole clusters to ensure complexity and freshness. This should open well with a few years in bottle and age over the next two decades. |
