About Copain
Wells Guthrie’s story is the stuff of dreams. Formerly a tasting coordinator for Wine Spectator, he was determined to make his own wines and moved to France together with his wife, where he apprenticed under the great Michel Chapoutier for 2 years. Upon his return to California, he founded Copain Wines in 1999, choosing to focus on Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Syrah sourced from the cooler regions of Mendocino County, Anderson Valley and Sonoma Coast. As the former protégé of Chapoutier, it comes as little surprise that Guthrie’s wines draw inspiration from the Rhône Valley.
