    Romanée-Conti

    About Domaine de la Romanée-Conti

Domaine de la Romanée-Conti (aka DRC) is an iconic producer – and has maintained this position for many decades. DRC has a fascinating and lengthy history spanning the ownership of its namesake vineyard by the Bourbon Prince of Conti, through the French Revolution to the current owner of the de Villaine and Leroy/Roch families. Managing 25 hectares of exclusively Grand Cru vineyards, Domaine de la Romanée-Conti is the sole Burgundian estate to bottle nothing other than the pinnacle of the region’s classification system.

Chief amongst all Burgundy producers to claim holdings in most of the magical terroir in Vosne-Romanée, Domaine de la Romanée-Conti is famously hailed as the King of Vosne-Romanée. Possessing only the best vineyard in the region, two of their most sought after red wines being Romanée-Conti and La Tâche, both of which are monopole holdings and frequently amongst the best offerings in Burgundy.

Apart from Romanée-Conti and La Tâche, DRC also produces four other Grand Cru wines from Vosne-Romanée at ultra-limited quantity each year: Romanée St-Vivant Grand Cru (approx. 1,500 cases/year), Richebourg Grand Cru (approx. 1,000 cases/year), Échezeaux Grand Cru (approx. 1,340 cases/year) and Grand Échezeau Grand Cru (approx. 1,150 cases/year).

The style of the DRC wines is rich, intense, silky, transparent and quite light on the aromatic palate with more red than dark nuances. The use of whole clusters gives a very rich aromatic profile, and a very high complexity as the wine ages. All the wines are very reflective of the terroir, and the difference in terroir is very clear even when the wines are very young and powerful. Domaine de la Romanée-Conti normally use 100% new oak on the wines.

    Vinous (93+)

Savory herbs, mint, bright red berries, spices, iron, crushed rocks and autumn leaves are some of the notes that grace the palate in the 2011 Corton. The 2011 is beautifully centered, with underlying veins of acidity and minerality that run through its core. At the same time, the precocious vintage has yielded a Corton that is unusually supple and tender in its youth. This is a model of pure class. The gentle, enveloping finish gives the 2011 much of its early appeal.

Bright medium red. Wild perfume of strawberry, raspberry, pepper, caramel and earth. Lovely precision and lift to the tangy raspberry, cherry and spice flavors complicated by saline minerality. Quite tight today, showing a restrained sweetness. Finishes with firm-edged, slightly tough tannins and excellent length. A very good vintage for this grand cru blend.

The 2019 Corton Grand Cru was picked at just 15hL/ha on 19 of September. Now here we have a lovely bouquet with brambly red fruit, redcurrant and cranberry, light rose petal notes and just a touch of bergamot. The palate is medium-bodied with a vivacious opening, perfectly judged acidity, nothing weighty or particularly concentrated. Yet, there is a sense of “flow” to this Corton with Morello cherry lingering on the finish. Its lightness of touch is quite remarkable for such a warm growing season. 367 cases produced. Tasted at Corney & Barrow’s annual in bottle tasting in London.

Firm, tight and intense, with rich, sharply focused flavors that are smooth and lively. A tasty core of black cherry, plum and currant notes is shaded by smoky, cedary oak nuances. Balanced, firmly tannic and drinkable now, but almost sure to improve thr 1,700 cases made. -

The 2011 Échézeaux literally jumps from the glass with a heady melange of dark red fruit, sweet floral notes and crushed rocks. Rich and explosive on the palate, yet backed up with significant structure and pure intensity, the 2011 is firing on all cylinders. First and foremost, the Échézeaux is a wine of pure texture. The Échézeaux emerges from 7-8 parcels in the Poulallières climat. There is so much to like here.

One of the best Echézeaux I've had from DRC in recent years, with very little to choose between it and the normally superior Grands Echézeaux bottling, this is more deeply coloured than usual. It's spicy and stemmy, with a good core of sweetness, bright acidity and textured fruit.

Dark garnet. Heady, almost gamey nose – immediately much richer and denser than the Corton. Jewelly somehow and with a certain meatiness on the nose. Great energy and some spice. Lots of refined red fruit. Imagine the subtlest redcurrant liqueur… Tannins definitely present. Very long. Very communicative!

The 2017 Echézeaux Grand Cru is similarly lifted, with a bit darker fruit and more structure than the Corton. A deceptive, beguiling Burgundy, the 2017 shows the mid-weight structure of the year. Here too, time in the glass brings out the wine’s vertical feel and overall intensity. The 2017 needs time to soften, but it is incredibly persistent and impeccable in its balance. Readers should expect an especially austere Echézeaux that is going to require cellaring. The fruit was brought in on September 13 and 15, with a day’s break in between because of rain.

I was blown away by the 2005 Grands-Echézeaux Grand Cru because though I have tasted it two or three times, never could I envisage that it would reach this level. It has laser-like precision on the nose with more blue fruit than I remember, so much mineralité, as if someone had just ground limestone directly into the wine glass. The palate is exquisitely balanced with filigree tannins framing the pure red fruit, a Pinot Noir with unerring symmetry. It gains weight and depth with aeration, ultimately transforming into a profound wine and one of the best bottles of Grands-Echézeaux that I have tasted from the domaine. Dark cherry, plum, cloves and menthol are some of the many notes that wrap around the palate in the 2011 Grands-Échézeaux. This is an especially dark, somber Grands-Échézeaux. Today the tannins are quite firm and the wine is holding back much of its potential, but it possesses superb depth that will only fully emerge after a number of years in the cellar. Sweet tobacco, savory herbs and leather wrap around a finish infused with gravitas.

Bright medium red. At once more somber and higher-pitched on the nose than the Echézeaux, offering aromas of black cherry, dark berries, violet and bitter chocolate. A step up in texture and richness but densely packed and imploded today. At once powerful and cool, conveying terrific energy to its flavors of dark fruits, salty minerality, licorice and violet. This very long, powerful wine displays a downright chewy texture and yet there's noteworthy finesse to its tannins. Really glistens on the very long, rising finish. Forget about this beauty for a decade.

The 2017 Grands-Echézeaux Grand Cru is a pretty big step up in this range, both in terms of depth, power and energy. Here the flavors are dark, while there is quite a bit of tannin lurking beneath. Black cherry, graphite, leather, smoke, spice and menthol infuse the 2017 with tons of virile, somber character. Readers will have to be very patient. A whole range of sepia-toned aromas and flavors shrouded in tannin add depth to an imposing Grands-Echézeaux built for cellaring. Harvest was on September 12.

The 2005 La Tâche is simply magnificent. There is not too much I can add. Deep, powerful and richly textured, the 2005 simply has it all. Time in the glass releases the aromatics, but it is the wine’s pure sensuality I find most enticing. A host of dark red and blue stone fruits, hard candy and wild flowers take center stage. Good medium red. Explosive aromas of red berries, Oriental spices, pepper and truffley underbrush. The wild but utterly silky palate offers extraordinary sweetness and perfume, but with a savory, firm edge giving it shape and grip. Not at all a blockbuster, but impeccably balanced wine. The 2015 La Tâche Grand Cru is a young classic, soaring from the glass with an exotic and stunningly complex bouquet of dark berries, plums, hoisin, smoked duck, dark chocolate, licorice and Chinese five spice, with just a touch of rose hip on the upper register. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, multidimensional and authoritative, with more mid-palate depth than the Richebourg, its attack more textural and layered. The tannins here are fine grained but firm—swathed in an ample core of plummy, almost savory fruit—and the finish is long and scintillating. The 2017 La Tâche Grand Cru is another of the more expressive wines in the range. It opens with striking mid-palate pliancy and also possesses a level of inner sweetness the other wines don’t have, and yet there is plenty of the tannic clout that defines the Richebourg as well. Time in the glass allows all of those elements to emerge fully, especially the aromatics that are such a La Tâche signature. Creamy, ample and wonderfully expressive, 2017 is superb today. Like many 2002s at five years of age, this is really beginning to close up and become a good deal less expressive. Vigorous swirling however coaxes a superbly detailed if reluctant nose of dried rose petals, kirsch and plenty of spice elements. The medium weight plus flavors are taut, focused, very backward, powerful and punchy and like the nose, blessed with seriously impressive detail and layer after layer of sappy extract and incredible depth. Impeccably balanced with a certain tenderness here with tannins that are sophisticated and quite fine with the classic Romanée-Conti character of an almost spiritual sense of harmony. Though it will need a lot of time, this will become a great vintage for Romanée-Conti.

Violets, roses, raspberries, and red cherries emanate from the 2003 Richebourg. Full-bodied, deep, and hugely concentrated, it is muscular, firm and displays the firmest structure of the Domaine de la Romanee-Conti’s 2003s. Soy sauce, tar, chocolate, and dark fruits are found in its focused, audacious personality. Its impressively persistent finish is studded with highly present tannin. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2025.

Good deep red. Expressive, complex nose combines darker, wilder fruits with musky underbrush. Sweet, suave and pure, with somewhat muscular fruit character compared to the more feminine RSV. Then quite suave on the finish, with powdery tannins and noteworthy purity and persistence. This has lovely balance.

Rich and explosive on the palate, yet backed up with significant structure and pure intensity, the 2011 is firing on all cylinders. First and foremost, the Échézeaux is a wine of pure texture. One of the best Echézeaux I've had from DRC in recent years, with very little to choose between it and the normally superior Grands Echézeaux bottling, this is more deeply coloured than usual. It's spicy and stemmy, with a good core of sweetness, bright acidity and textured fruit.

Domaine de la Romanee-Conti Richebourg Grand Cru 2004 (3x75cl)

    Stephen Tanzer - Vinous (91-94)

Good deep red. Expressive, complex nose combines darker, wilder fruits with musky underbrush. Sweet, suave and pure, with somewhat muscular fruit character compared to the more feminine RSV. Then quite suave on the finish, with powdery tannins and noteworthy purity and persistence. This has lovely balance.
