    De Montille

Domaine de Montille in the Cote de Beaune was developed by Hubert de Montille in 1951. His family have aristocratic roots in the region’s land since the 17th century. Now run by his son, Etienne, they use traditional wine making techniques to produce pure elegant Burgundy that generally requires five years bottle ageing.

    • De Montille Beaune 1er Cru Les Greves 2018 (6x75cl)

      Vinous (91-93)

The 2018 Beaune Grèves 1er Cru comes from iron-rich clayey soils and contains two-thirds whole cluster this year. It has a lovely bouquet of red berry fruit laced with slate and bay leaf aromas, very well defined and absorbing the 25% new oak easily. The palate is well balanced with a mineral-rich entry, a fine bead of acidity and touches of brown spice sprinkled over the red fruit. The stony, terse finish indicates that it could age for longer than many will grant it.

Dark berry fruit, a touch of black olive and hints of presses iris petal unfold on the nose. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannins, granular in texture with a fresh, slightly chalky finish. Very fine. Closure: Diam

    • De Montille Beaune 1er Cru Les Greves 2021 (6x75cl)

      Vinous (87-89)

The 2021 Beaune Grèves 1er Cru, which includes 50% whole bunches, was taken from barrel. It has an attractive nose with brambly red fruit, tertiary notes and touches of cigar humidor. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly dry tannins and moderate depth, but I feel there is a tad too much whole bunches on the finish here, and it is obfuscating the terroir expression.

    • De Montille Beaune 1er Cru Les Perrieres 2016 (6x75cl)

      Vinous (89-91)

(20% new oak and one-third vendange entier; the average vine age here is 50 years): Medium red. More delicate on the nose than the Les Sizies, offering scents of strawberry and stone. Then juicier and more energetic on the palate, showing lovely precision and penetration to its red fruit and saline mineral flavors. On the lean side but the firmly tannic finish leaves behind a salty tang. Winemaker Brian Sieve describes the estate's Perrières holding as our most active limestone site along with the Nuits-Saint-Georges Aux Thoreys. This wine started its malolactic fermentation sur marc--i.e., in the tank before the alcoholic fermentation finished.

The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grain tannins and moderate depth that it doesn't quite kick on towards the finish. Not bad, but a little "contained".

The 2013 Corton Clos du Roi Grand Cru, which was two-third whole-cluster fruit, has a well-defined bouquet with very fine mineralité. These aromatics just speak of class. The palate is medium-bodied with fresh and supple tannins, finely-tuned acidity and commendable precision on the finish. Vinous (91-93)

The 2020 Corton Clos du Roi Grand Cru is two-thirds whole cluster fruit. Quite closed, broody and stroppy on the nose, it does not budge when I gave my glass aeration. That’s not necessarily a bad thing. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent tannins, quite saline and spicy, a dash of white pepper towards the finish. Good depth, quite voluminous on the finish. Give this 4-6 years in bottle. Closure: Diam

The 2014 Volnay 1er Cru Champans was fully destemmed this year. I like the definition here, vibrant with red cherry and redcurrant that is beautifully defined. The palate is medium-bodied and tightly wound. It feels quite masculine with a chalky texture finish; there is good backbone and extraction. Give this 3-4 years so that it becomes less Pommard and more Volnay.

The 2018 Volnay Les Champans 1er Cru includes 50% whole cluster and has a much more floral bouquet than the Mitans, with wilted rose petal percolating through the red fruit. The well-balanced palate is tannic on the entry. The brisk, terse finish indicates that it is in for the long haul. I like the salinity here. A rather uncompromising but satisfying/challenging Volnay.

The 2018 Volnay Les Mitans 1er Cru is 100% whole cluster and underwent one of the earliest malolactics, finishing by January 2019. It has a mixture of red and black fruit tinged with brown spices. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy red fruit, the whole cluster so well integrated that you would guess it contained far less. • De Montille Volnay 1er Cru Les Taillepieds 2013 (6x75cl)

      Vinous (91)

Bright, dark red. Much riper on the nose than the Beaune Grèves but still with a medicinal aspect to the complex aromas of black cherry, crushed rock and flint. Plush, dense, savory wine with excellent purity and lift, conveying strong mineral cut to the raspberry and redcurrant flavors. There's something Vosne-like in this wine's salinity. The slatey finish features suave, well-integrated tannins; really glistens and rises on the aftertaste. This has turned out very well.

(100% vendange entier; 35% new oak): Good medium red. Subdued aromas and flavors of raspberry, black cherry, earth and smoky minerality accented by hints of pepper and herbs from the stems. Broad, ripe and smooth but quite dry. Displays very good spicy energy, length and lift but the substantial dusty tannins leave the finish a bit clenched today. The 2018 Volnay Les Taillepieds 1er Cru is better on the nose than its peers. Lifted blackberry, raspberry and sous-bois aromas become more floral with time in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy red fruit and some stem addition that does not quite assimilate towards the finish, as if there are two Volnays competing in the same glass. That might resolve itself with time in bottle… we will see. Still an intriguing proposition. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2018 red tasting.

The palate is quite effervescent with crisp acidity and good tension. Citrus-fresh and vibrant towards the finish, this has a dash of spice lingering on the aftertaste. Superb. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2018 white tasting.

    • De Montille Volnay 1er Cru Les Champans 2014 (6x75cl)

      Wine Advocate (89-91)

The 2014 Volnay 1er Cru Champans was fully destemmed this year. I like the definition here, vibrant with red cherry and redcurrant that is beautifully defined. The palate is medium-bodied and tightly wound. It feels quite masculine with a chalky texture finish; there is good backbone and extraction. Give this 3-4 years so that it becomes less Pommard and more Volnay.

    • De Montille Volnay 1er Cru Les Champans 2018 (6x75cl)

      Vinous (91-93)

The 2018 Volnay Les Champans 1er Cru includes 50% whole cluster and has a much more floral bouquet than the Mitans, with wilted rose petal percolating through the red fruit. The well-balanced palate is tannic on the entry. The brisk, terse finish indicates that it is in for the long haul. I like the salinity here. A rather uncompromising but satisfying/challenging Volnay.

    • De Montille Volnay 1er Cru Les Mitans 2018 (6x75cl)

      Vinous (91-93)

The 2018 Volnay Les Mitans 1er Cru is 100% whole cluster and underwent one of the earliest malolactics, finishing by January 2019. It has a mixture of red and black fruit tinged with brown spices. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy red fruit, the whole cluster so well integrated that you would guess it contained far less. The elegant finish is tinged with bay leaf and white pepper notes. Excellent.

    • De Montille Volnay 1er Cru Les Mitans 2021 (6x75cl)

      Vinous (90-92)

The 2021 Volnay Les Mitans 1er Cru is 100% whole clusters this year. That obviously comes across on the nose and slightly obscures the terroir expression, but there is just about sufficient fruit. The palate is well balanced with crisp acidity, crunchy dark berry fruit laced with Earl Grey and cracked black pepper with a short finish. Brisk and lively, though not long-term.

    • De Montille Volnay 1er Cru Les Taillepieds 2014 (6x75cl)

      Vinous (90+)

(100% vendange entier; 35% new oak): Good medium red. Subdued aromas and flavors of raspberry, black cherry, earth and smoky minerality accented by hints of pepper and herbs from the stems. Broad, ripe and smooth but quite dry. Displays very good spicy energy, length and lift but the substantial dusty tannins leave the finish a bit clenched today. This slightly edgy wine will need patience.

    • De Montille Volnay 1er Cru Les Taillepieds 2018 (6x75cl)

      Vinous (91)

The 2018 Volnay Les Taillepieds 1er Cru is better on the nose than its peers. Lifted blackberry, raspberry and sous-bois aromas become more floral with time in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy red fruit and some stem addition that does not quite assimilate towards the finish, as if there are two Volnays competing in the same glass. That might resolve itself with time in bottle… we will see. Still an intriguing proposition. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2018 red tasting.

    • De Montille Vosne-Romanee 1er Les Malconsorts Cuvee Christiane 2020 (6x75cl)

      Vinous (95-97)

The 2020 Vosne-Romanée Les Malconsorts Cuvée Christiane 1er Cru is 80% whole cluster, very different in aromatic profile to the regular cuvée, more ferrous with hints of red pepper infusing the red and black fruit. The palate is very well-defined and comparing side-by-side, this conveys more energy and tension than the regular cuvée, almost with greater precision towards the finish. Very long and tender, this is a marvellous Vosne-Romanée for long-term ageing. Closure: Diam

    • De Montille Vosne-Romanee 1er Les Malconsorts Cuvee Christiane 2021 (6x75cl)

      Vinous (93-95)

The 2021 Vosne-Romanée Les Malconsorts Cuvée Christiane 1er Cru has two-thirds whole cluster, a little more than the regular cuvée, malo not completed until August 2022. The bouquet is fresh on the entry with fine acidity; there's more detail and nuance here. The 2021 is beautifully balanced and quite granular towards the finish, full of tension with a long tail on the finish. Sublime.
