Fattoria La Massa
The Fattoria La Massa estate is situated in the hills of Panzano, in the prestigious 'Conca d’Oro' (Golden Basin) of the Chianti Classico DOCG zone. The estates history dates back to the fifteenth century and was acquired by the current owner Giampaolo Motta in 1992. Under Motta's ownership the estate has thrived. The first vintage of the flagship 'Giorgio Primo' (sold as Chianti Classico then) was awarded the prestigious 'Tre Bicchieri' (three glasses) from the Italian wine guide Gambero Rosso. The praise of the international press has been ongoing since. Alongside top oenologist Carlo Ferrini, they have made dramatic improvements to the vineyards; planting the vines closer together, introducing new clones and experimenting with the classic Super Tuscan grape varieties: Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Wanting more freedom to develop their own style, Motta decided to start producing only IGT wines that were driven by La Massa's terroir.

The 2017 Carla 6, La Massa's 100% Sangiovese, is fleshy, succulent and incredibly inviting. Sweet red cherry, kirsch, mint, blood orange and spice give the 2017 its racy feel. There is plenty of Sangiovese character, and yet at the same time, proprietor Giampaolo Motta has succeeded in crafting a wine that has its own distinctive personality. I can't think of many pure Sangioveses that manage to be opulent and also varietal.Inc. VAT£554.69 -

This is a truly sumptuous wine that stands as a tall testament to the winemaking talents of Giampaolo Motta, his vision for interpreting this vintage and his specific vineyard site in Panzano in Chianti. This standout wine brings Fattoria la Massa to a new level of accomplishment and opens an exciting new chapter of possibility. The 2013 Giorgio Primo (50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot) is dark and impenetrable on first impact. The aromas accelerate slowly and grow evenly in power and intensity after a few quick swirls of the glass. The bouquet peels back with dark fruit aromas, baking spice and Mediterranean herb. The effect is seamless and smooth. A velvety texture is accented by full-bodied richness and just enough freshness to keep the palate energized. And, of course, this is just the beginning of a long cellar life.Inc. VAT£531.64 -

The consistency and depth of this wine is just incredible. Like the Carla 6, the 2016 Giorgio Primo shows an inky dark color, almost totally black, with penetrating fruit and long waves of rich fruit flavor throughout. George the First casts mesmerizing spells of spice, tar and smoke. This is a blend of 50% Merlot, 45% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Petit Verdot. This is another outstanding effort from Fattoria La Massa and its eccentric but visionary founder, Giampaolo Motta. Some 16,000 bottles, magnums, double magnums and other large formats were created.Inc. VAT£764.44
