Fontodi
About Fontodi
Fontodi has been in the Manetti family since the 1960's after they grew tired of the role they had held for centuries prior; producing the iconic terracotta tiles which adorn the roofs of wineries and homes throughout Tuscany. Pursuing a policy of meticulous attention to detail and craftsmanship, the estate has become one of the most well-known names in Tuscany and for good reason. Producing some of the regions finest examples of Chianti Classico alongside the iconic Super Tuscan, Flaccianello della Pieve, Fontodi is an essential player in Italian wine.-

The 2010 Syrah Case Via is seriously beautiful. An exotic melange of black fruit, smoke, licorice, melted road tar and incense bursts from the glass. The 2010 is rich, full-bodied and impeccable. Stylistically, the wine's volume and shape are closer to those of warm-climate Syrahs. It will be interesting to see if more varietal character develops with time in bottle.Inc. VAT£555.64 -

The 2010 Chianti Classico boasts striking inner perfume, but is otherswise very shut down. Today, the 2010 seems to combine the finesse of the 2004 with some of the structure of the 2006. Clean veins of 2010 acidity support the brilliant, sensual finish. The 2010 is a gorgeous wine with a bright future, although readers will need to be patient.Inc. VAT£253.24 -

From an iconic vintage that gave generously to all grape varieties across almost all of Tuscany, this wine ranks high on the Fontodi billboard of greatest hits. The 2010 Flaccianello della Pieve is a rock solid wine that sits firm and begins to peel slowly, each delicate layer at a time. It puts on quite a show with a solid core of dark fruit followed by smoke, spice, tar, licorice and delicate blue flower. On previous tastings of this vintage, I had scored it 97 and 97+ points, respectively. I'm going down one point at this sitting because the wine's fiber has unraveled, ever so slightly, at the edges. It still maintains that solid core, but the wine has taken an important jump forward in its evolution these past three years. Evidently, it is currently in a phase of relaxation and unwinding. Beautifully polished notes of Mediterranean herb and dried mint appear on the long, glossy finish. Giovanni Manetti compares the 2010 vintage to 2006 but considers this vintage slightly more approachable overall.Inc. VAT£504.49 -
