Hoffmann Jayer (previously Jayer Gilles)
Indulge in exquisite wines brought to you by the renowned Jayer Gilles, producing some of the finest Burgundy wines in France. Founded in 1966, this family-owned domain has captured the attention of wine connoisseurs around the globe for its exceptional quality and attention to detail. From vineyard to bottle, Jayer Gilles crafts elegant, balanced wines that capture the essence of Burgundy terroir.
Domaine Hoffmann-Jayer, previously known as Domaine Gilles Jayer, does have a link to the revered Jayer family. Founded in the 1950s by Robert Jayer and his wife Paulette, who originated from Vosne Romanée, this estate has been a purely familial affair. It passed to their only son, Gilles Jayer, in 1991, and boasts an impressive range of Grand Cru and 1er Cru holdings that typically make the headlines.
As with many family businesses, Gilles Jayer faced the ultimate dilemma of having no descendants to inherit the property. In 2017, he decided to sell it to André Hoffmann, a Swiss national and avid wine enthusiast, who embarked on a new dynasty for the estate and renamed it Domaine Hoffmann-Jayer.
Since acquiring the property and vineyards from the Jayer era, Hoffmann has revolutionized the winemaking process. He has abandoned Gilles Jayer's robust style in favor of a more modern and balanced approach, drastically reducing the use of oak. Hoffmann's team, led by Alexandre Vernet, has made impressive progress, with the first vintage of the new era receiving critical acclaim across the board.

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (93-95)This comes from the Echezeaux du Dessus, a plot purchased in the 1960s which must have been almost immediately replanted as the vines are now 50 years old. 30% whole bunch vinification and 70% of the cuvée is in new wood but we tasted from a one year old barrel. Equally dense purple in colour. Haunting qualities with real depth. Firm and forceful, some fine-grained tannins, covered with a wealth of rich red fruit including some strawberries. |

Burghound (91-93)Once again there is noticeable wood framing the spicy red and dark currant scents where more aromatic breadth is present in the form of Asian-style tea and lavender wisps. There is a lovely sense of energy to the focused middle weight flavors that possess even better depth and persistence on the balanced finale. While this is certainly pretty and has enough stuffing to reward mid-term cellaring, it is not nearly as dense and powerful as it usually is. |

Vinous (92)The 2011 Nuits St. Georges Les Hauts Porrets is beautifully centered focused. Here it is the wine's density and power that stand out most. Hints of leather, plum, mint and sweet spices add complexity in an impeccable, utterly delicious Burgundy. It's all there in the 2011 Les Hauts Porrets. |

Vinous (90-93)Remarkably vivid in the glass, the 2012 Nuits-Saint-Georges Les Hauts Porrets is super-impressive. Black cherries, menthol and spices are some of the many notes that come alive in an outrageously beautiful Burgundy loaded with tons of potential. I can't wait to taste this from bottle. |

Vinous (89)Bright dark red. Brisk, tight nose hints at dark fruits and minerals. In a juicy but very dry style, and distinctly imploded today. This tannic, slightly hard-edged wine is tough going. A puzzling showing: my score gives it the benefit of some doubt. |

Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (90-93)Bright, dark ruby-red. Very pure, vibrant aromas of kirsch, blackberry, licorice and cocoa powder. Strongly mineral-driven on the palate but not aggressive, with concentrated dark fruit and saline flavors complemented but not overshadowed by the 100% oak. Finishes with fine-grained tannins and lovely floral persistence. Gilles Jayer told me that this climat on thin soil over rock belongs entirely to him and to Domaine Machard de Gramont and really merits premier cru classification. My notes and scores on this cuvée over the past 15 to 20 years suggest that he's right. |
