Jean Grivot
About Domaine Jean Grivot
Domaine Jean Grivot is today one of Burgundy's true icons, under the talented stewardship of the fifth generation of Grivots, this is a Domaine that shows its full pedigree vintage after vintage. Domaine Jean Grivot is one of the very first Burgundian Domaines to bottle and sell wine under their own name in the 1930s, the Grivot family’s roots run almost as deep as their vines’ in the region.
Etienne and his wife Marielle took over from his late father, the eponymous Jean, in the early 1980s. The style of the wine under Jean was perfectly refined and elegant, but somewhat lacking in depth and richness, especially in lesser vintages. The terrible vintage of 1994 was something of a blessing in disguise for the estate – it allowed Etienne to find his voice and, through necessity as much as anything, develop a bolder and more generous style of wine with real profundity.
Viniculture
Well into his stride of crafting a range of sensational wines, the 15 hectare Domaine is consistently one of the most sought after and critically acclaimed names in Burgundy. The Grivot vines are on average a considerable 50 years old, spread across some of the finest vineyards in Vosne-Romanée and Nuits-St-Georges. Aside from completely destemming the grapes, Etienne favours a very low intervention style of winemaking, claiming to favour the “spiritual” (natural fermentation) to the “physical” (punching down etc.).
Somewhat averse to the gushing praise heaped upon him, Etienne says of his success: “There’s no recipe; it’s very personal. As a result it’s very frustrating as one’s never content”.

Vinous (93-95)
The 2018 Vosne-Romanée Aux Brûlées 1er Cru has a southern orientation, but Mathilde Grivot was surprised that it only reached 13.0° alcohol; this was due, she believes, to the rain before the harvest. It takes a little time to cohere in the glass. After a couple of minutes, it offers lovely red and black fruit intermingling with black truffle and damp earthy/woodland aromas, delicate and refined. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins, precise and focused. Not a Aux Brûlées of substance and density, but rather one of precision and focus. Excellent.Inc. VAT£527.05 -
Vinous (93-95)
The 2021 Vosne-Romanée Aux Brûlées 1er Cru has an exquisitely-delineated bouquet with black plum and raspberry fruit that unfold with each swirl of the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with a slightly flinty opening, compact, quite peppery with a deepening and rather grippy finish. There is something sultry about this Aux Brûlées, a Premier Cru that will repay 4-5 years in the cellar.Inc. VAT£875.54 -
Wine Advocate (94+)
The 2009 Vosne-Romanee Les Beaux Monts is fabulous. Waves of fruit jump from the glass. The Beaux-Monts impresses for its textural depth and richness. There is an intense minerality to the fruit that gives the wine much of its power. The Beaux-Monts is firing on all cylinders today. A crescendo of fruit saturates the palate on the finish. This is another headspinning 2009 from Grivot. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2029.Inc. VAT£599.05 -
Decanter (95)
Always one of Etienne and Mathilde Grivot's stand-out Premier Cru reds, this is not the most immediate of their cuvées at a young age, often displaying some grip and tannic backbone as well as a hint of meaty reduction, but the fruit concentration and depth is remarkable here, supported by chalky minerality and scented 30% new wood. Wonderfully patrician and well-structured.Inc. VAT£813.62 -

Cherry, blackberry, peat, and game in the nose of the Grivot 2008 Vosne Romanee Reignots set the theme for a firm though juicy palate, and salt, chalk, nut oil, and cherry pit notes in an invigorating, downright refreshing finish reminding me of the extent to which the wines in this collection – by design – showcase Pinot virtues that can also apply to white wines. Since there were only around 350 liters, Grivot elected to supplement a new barrique with a new feuillette, which explains a hint of oak resin and slight sense of tannic stiffness that will hopefully be absorbed. Certainly the wine deserves to be attended to for at least a decade.Inc. VAT£3,711.64 -
Jancis Robinson (17.5)
Light to mid crimson. Scented with red fruit and stone dust. Mouth-watering freshness and purity, well structured by the finest of tannins that are easy to underestimate as they are so refined. Long and juicy.Inc. VAT£468.41 -
Vinous (92-94)
The 2019 Vosne-Romanée Les Rouges 1er Cru has "grown up a lot over the last 10 years," according to Etienne Grivot. It is one of the more reticent cuvées on the nose this year, reluctantly unfolding to reveal more tertiary red berry fruit laced with garrigue and iodine. Good complexity, but these aromatics will need time to open. The palate is medium-bodied with supple, lithe tannins. Quite compact at the moment, this has good grip and a saline, marine-influenced finish that fans out beautifully. A succinct, understated Les Rouge that will give 20-plus years of pleasure.Inc. VAT£871.24 -
Vinous (92-94)
A dark, powerful Burgundy, the 2011 Vosne-Romanée Les Suchots is another wine deeply marked by site. Black fruit, smoke, tar, incense and scorched earth all come together in this decidedly masculine, brooding wine. Ideally, the 2011 is best cellared for at least a few years, but it will always remain full-bodied and intense.Inc. VAT£2,192.44 -
Decanter (95)
Always one of my favourite Vosne premiers crus from Mathilde and Etienne Grivot, this textured, stylish, deftly oaked red has all the most appealing features of the 2017 vintage, with lots of sumptuous, summer-pudding fruit, filigree tannins and a foundation of acidity. It's deceptively forward, as this has the minerality and focus to age.Inc. VAT£1,681.24 -
Vinous (93-95)
The 2021 Vosne-Romanée Les Suchots 1er Cru perhaps has the most mineral-driven bouquet of Grivot’s Premier Crus: graphite-infused red fruit, touches of forest floor, very precise and detailed. The palate is medium-bodied with finely-sculpted tannins. There is unerring symmetry here and whilst it may miss a bit of substance on the finish, this may well be addressed by the time it finishes its élevage. Superb.Inc. VAT£1,102.34 -
Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (93-95)
Clear bright ruby purple. The nose flickers in and out, and while there is a fine tensile line of red berry fruit, this is not too demonstrative. Perhaps some of the refined detail of an Echezeaux. A slight sucrosity of strawberry fruit, and very persistent. Very good and extremely typical of Suchots this year. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: November 2023.Inc. VAT£1,001.54 -
Vinous (88-91)
(made from 12 parcels encompassing 7 different terroirs, according to Grivot): Bright, dark red. Aromas of black cherry and cocoa powder. Juicy and energetic, showing lovely inner-mouth lift and refinement to its flavors of black fruits, licorice, violet and cocoa powder. Quite tightly wound on the sappy back end, spreading out subtly and leaving behind vibrant note of spices and black pepper.Inc. VAT£728.44 -
Vinous (89-91)
The 2018 Vosne-Romanée Village, matured in 20–25% new oak, has a well-defined, almost airy bouquet of red cherries, cranberry and sous-bois aromas that develop rose petal notes with time. The palate is medium-bodied with a supple opening and quite juicy in style. An attractive peppery finish extends the aftertaste. Very fine.Inc. VAT£350.81 -
Vinous (89-91)
The 2021 Vosne-Romanée Village has a very pretty nose with brambly red fruit briary and light sous-bois aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with tart red fruit, fine backbone, quite tannic with a touch of white pepper on the finish. A lovely Vosne-Romanée.Inc. VAT£605.09
