    Maison Joseph Drouhin

The eponymous Joseph Drouhin founded the négociant company, which bears his name in 1880, having spent much of his early life in Yonne. His son Maurice took over in 1918, buying the first vineyards, including the famous Clos des Mouches, which we are delighted to offer below. An arduous process of expansion thanks to the nature of Burgundy’s patchwork of owners, Maurice was finally able to carve out quite the empire for his family, which endures to this day.

A titanic character in Beaune, Maurice both sat on the INAO committee and acted as deputy administrator of the Hospices de Beaune throughout the turbulent World War II. At the height of his powers, Drouhin even had exclusive distribution rights to Domaine de la Romanée-Conti. However, he was unable to purchase a portion of the company, which subsequently went to Leroy.

His successor was his nephew Robert Jeausset-Drouhin, who took charge in 1957. Still maintaining a watchful eye over proceedings, Robert has ceded main control to his children (and fourth generation) Frédéric, Laurent, Philippe and Véronique. Philippe Drouhin manages the vineyards biodynamically, and as of 2009, their entire range has the ECOCERT organic certification.

Picked 8–11 September. High percentage of whole bunch – 40%. 'I had a crush on this wine this year', says Véronique Drouhin. Cask sample. Mid crimson. So pretty: red fruits, a stemmy freshness that is leafy but in a lovely way, not at all underripe. Fabulous depth and length but with an elegant shape, not exactly slim but perfectly proportioned, like the body of a yoga expert, sinewy and strong but not lean. Savoury with a marked oak flavour on the finish at the moment and a long peppery aftertaste.

Perfectly ripe strawberries with raspberry and citrus undertones. It’s medium-to full-bodied with really fine tannins that are nicely wrapped in ripe fruit. There’s a savory, lightly meaty highlight to the flavors. It’s long and complex in the finish. Really balanced and attractive now, but will deliver even more in the future. Better after 2023.

Mix of domaine and non-domaine fruit is fermented in oak. Over 40% whole bunch. Delicate extraction. Final blend in tank, to be bottled by mid February 2021. Very sweet, red-cherry nose and gorgeous sweet palate entry. Such a charmer! Almost irresistible. Vibrates on the palate on the sweet rather than majestic side but there is excellent freshness too. I may drink up the rest tonight! It may seem strange to suggest that a Chambertin-Clos de Bèze might be drinkable at only six years old but this is such a charmer...

The 2021 Chambertin Clos-de-Bèze Grand Cru is more backward than the Griotte, almost introspective with dark berry fruit, tobacco and tertiary scents. Just a touch of spice emerges with time. The palate displays very fine structure, good backbone, quite peppery towards the finish with a long tail. Whilst not as gregarious as the Griotte, this has a simmering intensity that I appreciate.

The 2017 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru has an open nose of brambly red fruit, sous-bois and wilted rose petals, very pure and charming, and not dissimilar in style to François Bertheau's Chambolle 1er Cru. The palate is very harmonious, open and transparent. It feels lighter than others, yet the tension and precision will see this age with style, and perhaps it will not close down. Tempting now, but I would prefer to wait. Classy. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2017 tasting.

This is a classic 'cuvée ronde', combining fruit from six different Premiers Crus to produce a stylish example of what Véronique Drouhin calls the 'cashmere of Burgundy'. Scented, balanced and ethereal, it's a transparent expression of Chambolle's range of terroirs, with sweet summer berry flavours and fine, velvety tannins. Accomplished stuff.

Blend of six different premiers crus vinified together (10% not owned by Drouhin), I think Véronique Drouhin said, but certainly blended quite early to provide some commercial volume. Final blend in tank, to be bottled by mid February 2021. Quite a deep crimson. The nose is a bit introvert at the moment, but the spread of subtle fruit across the palate is stunning! Velvety texture. This would make an excellent teaching tool to communicate Chambolle's special sumptuousness. Long and rich on the finish. Pure flattery.

Most of this fruit comes from domaine-owned parcels, but some is purchased. Six parcels in total contribute to this pretty, floral and silky-textured Chambolle. Sweet red fruits spread gently across the mid-weight palate before a light ganache note joins in and brings the wine into a gently fading finish. 2022-34

The 2017 Chambolle-Musigny Les Baudes 1er Cru has a very perfumed bouquet of brambly red berry fruit infused with pressed rose petal; touches of flint and bay leaf emerge with time. It seems to retract a little with aeration rather than expand. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannin and quite linear in style, featuring a liberal sprinkling of white pepper and clove toward the finish.

These domaine-owned vines average about 50 years in age. A few rows are even across the road, up against Musigny. As they say, it's a desirable neighborhood. Pretty cherry fruits mesh with kirsch on the nose. The palate is equally charming, adding crushed stone minerality to the mix. Sleek tannins and integrated, buoyant acidity focus the mid-weight palate into a lengthy, perfumed finish. 2024-40

The 2019 Chambolle-Musigny Village showed just a little more reduction on the nose compared to Drouhin’s other Village Crus. The palate is compact and quite tight, delivering good weight but just missing a little amplitude. However, I do enjoy the sapidity on the aftertaste, and maybe it is simply biding its time. Give it a couple of years in bottle.

Drouhin's 2016 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru is showing very well from bottle, unfurling in the glass with aromas of ripe cherry and berry fruit that mingle with nuances of espresso, dried flowers and grilled meats, all framed by some toasty new oak. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, ample and satiny, with a sappy core of nicely concentrated fruit, fine tannins and bright balancing acids. This is an elegant, racy Charmes-Chambertin that is somewhat reminiscent of the 2010 rendition.

Deep and noticeably limpid in color, it has a gorgeous, pure and sensual bouquet that shows more composure than the Corton Grand Cru. The palate is medium-bodied with saturated tannins and more backbone than the Corton. The lively, spicy, black pepper-tinged finish lingers in the mouth. Excellent.

A very ripe nose features notes of plum, cassis, humus, forest floor and violet. The velvet-textured, concentrated and very serious big-bodied flavors possess seemingly endless reserves of sappy dry extract which helps to buffer the very firm tannic spine on the mocha-infused finish. This beautifully complex effort is less austere than it usually is at this point though the structure makes it pointedly clear that this is going to age for a very long time.

    Burghound (95)

A very ripe nose features notes of plum, cassis, humus, forest floor and violet. The velvet-textured, concentrated and very serious big-bodied flavors possess seemingly endless reserves of sappy dry extract which helps to buffer the very firm tannic spine on the mocha-infused finish. This beautifully complex effort is less austere than it usually is at this point though the structure makes it pointedly clear that this is going to age for a very long time.

    James Suckling (96)

This is a Clos de Vougeot with a dense and velvety texture that shows richness and structured. Yet, there is a friendliness and polish to the palate. Hazelnut and cream undertones. Reserved and almost shy at this point. Savory and flavorful. Drink in 2021.
