Maison Joseph Drouhin
The eponymous Joseph Drouhin founded the négociant company, which bears his name in 1880, having spent much of his early life in Yonne. His son Maurice took over in 1918, buying the first vineyards, including the famous Clos des Mouches, which we are delighted to offer below. An arduous process of expansion thanks to the nature of Burgundy’s patchwork of owners, Maurice was finally able to carve out quite the empire for his family, which endures to this day.
A titanic character in Beaune, Maurice both sat on the INAO committee and acted as deputy administrator of the Hospices de Beaune throughout the turbulent World War II. At the height of his powers, Drouhin even had exclusive distribution rights to Domaine de la Romanée-Conti. However, he was unable to purchase a portion of the company, which subsequently went to Leroy.
His successor was his nephew Robert Jeausset-Drouhin, who took charge in 1957. Still maintaining a watchful eye over proceedings, Robert has ceded main control to his children (and fourth generation) Frédéric, Laurent, Philippe and Véronique. Philippe Drouhin manages the vineyards biodynamically, and as of 2009, their entire range has the ECOCERT organic certification.

James Suckling (94-94)
Some very attractive clarity of fruit on the nose with an array of peaches, white nectarines, melons and honeysuckles. The concentration is staggering. Very, very deep and dense with great acid drive underlying the fleshy ripe fruits. A citrus, stony finish with honeysuckles, spice meat and stone fruits. Superb. Drink or hold.Inc. VAT£872.44 -

The 2020 Chassagne Montrachet Morgeot, 1er Cru (Marquis de Laguiche) has a slightly more tropical influenced bouquet compared to the Clos des Mouches Blanc, with passion fruit, nectarine and peach skin aromas. The palate is well balanced with hints of apricot and orange rind on the entry, a fine bead of acidity with ample depth and vigour on the finish. Superb.Inc. VAT£985.24 -
Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-95)
Picked between 2nd and 5th September. A very pretty clean lemon and lime. The oak is very well integrated into the classy nose. Plenty of energy but also light on its feet for Morgeot without betraying the appellation, and the fruit persists particularly well on the palate. Drink from 2030-2037. Tasted: November 2023.Inc. Burghound (95)
A very ripe nose features notes of plum, cassis, humus, forest floor and violet. The velvet-textured, concentrated and very serious big-bodied flavors possess seemingly endless reserves of sappy dry extract which helps to buffer the very firm tannic spine on the mocha-infused finish. This beautifully complex effort is less austere than it usually is at this point though the structure makes it pointedly clear that this is going to age for a very long time.Inc. VAT£1,429.24 -
James Suckling (96)
This is a Clos de Vougeot with a dense and velvety texture that shows richness and structured. Yet, there is a friendliness and polish to the palate. Hazelnut and cream undertones. Reserved and almost shy at this point. Savory and flavorful. Drink in 2021.Inc. VAT£1,359.64 -
Vinous (94)
The 2017 Clos Vougeot Grand Cru has a well-defined, quite floral bouquet of red currant, cranberry and light stony aromas, displaying pleasing transparency despite a very small reduction. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, fleshy and nicely poised, with a finessed, detailed, precise finish. Understated, yet there is intensity here. Excellent. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2017 tasting.Inc. VAT£1,262.44 -

Jancis Robinson (17.5)
Two parcels, one close to the tower and one at the bottom which they keep separate for quite a while. In hot, dry years such as 2019 and 2020 the bottom bit does very well because it retains moisture. 20% bought in. Final blend in tank, to be bottled by mid February 2021. Refined, high-toned nose with a meaty undertow. Then a notably sweet palate attack and quite chunky and forceful. Some whole-bunch influence. Clearly a grand cru. Still youthful with a lightly spicy nose. Lots of energy.Inc. VAT£1,291.24 -
