    La Gaffeliere

Château La Gaffelière is a Saint-Émilion Premiers Grands Cru Classé (B). The estate is located west of Château Pavie, just south of the town of Saint-Émilion. The estate sits on the ruins of a Gallo-Roman villa named "Le Palat", and later a 17th-century leper colony. The word "gaffet" translates to leper. In the late 1800s the original extensive estate (much like others such as the Léoville estate) was divided into what became Château Canon-la-Gaffelière, and an estate first called Château Gaffelière-Naudes (“Naudes” was dropped in 1963). La Gaffelière has belonged to the Malet-Roquefort family for more than three centuries! The vineyard area extends to 22 hectares, with Merlot accounting for 80% (the remainder Cabernet Franc). Around 10,000 cases of the Grand Vin are produced, and the second wine is named Clos La Gaffelière.

    La Gaffeliere 1998 (12x75cl)

    Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (85)

Medium red. Cherry, licorice, mint and a whiff of raw oak on the nose. Juicy and fairly intensely flavored, but with somewhat green flavors. Finishes with rather dry tannins. My sample of the 2000 was tart and underripe; it hard to believe that the sample was representative. The '99 was also green, and the tannins were astringent.

    La Gaffeliere 2013 (6x75cl)

    Vinous - Antonio Galloni (90-92)

A distinctly savory, compact wine, the 2013 La Gaffelière stands out for its energy and drive. Aging is going to be critical here. Tobacco, iron, smoke, sweet herbs, licorice and menthol linger on the finish. I very much like the sense of tension here. In 2013, La Gaffelière is absolutely impeccable. This is a wine with serious potential. Tasted two times.

    La Gaffeliere 2015 (12x75cl)

    Vinous - Antonio Galloni (94-97)

The 2015 La Gaffelière is a brilliant wine. Soaring, intense aromatics make a strong first impression. Precise and beautifully sculpted throughout, the 2015 bristles with energy. The flavors show good brightness, while the tannins are exceptionally polished. Freshly cut flowers, mint, espresso, sweet red plums and anise grace the palate in an utterly exquisite wine built on finesse, precision and nuance. The 2015 La Gaffelière is an exceptional wine by any measure. The 70% Merlot/30% Cabernet Franc works very well. Stéphane Derenoncourt and Simon Blanchard are the consulting winmakers. Tasted two times.

The 2018 La Gaffelière is hands down one of the wines of the vintage. Towering in its stature and vertical lift, the 2018 dazzles right out of the gate. Inky dark fruit, mocha, spice, licorice and leather all run through this deep, wonderfully pliant Saint-Émilion. The 2018 is rich, deep and beautifully resonant, with tremendous depth and tons of stature that builds, all framed by beams of supporting minerality that confer vibrancy. La Gaffelière is distinctive, alluring and arresting right out of the gate. It is another magnificent showing from this reborn estate. The blend is 63% Merlot and 37% Cabernet Franc. Magnifique!

Deep garnet-purple colored, it spills from the glass with alluring notions of black raspberries, boysenberry preserves, Morello cherries, and roses, plus suggestions of Ceylon tea, dried mint, and crushed rocks. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is elegantly crafted and refreshing, bursting with bright, lively fruit, finishing long and achingly floral. This is an effortlessly gorgeous Saint-Emilion, not to be missed.

    La Gaffeliere 2020 (3x150cl)

    Vinous - Neal Martin (96-98)

The 2020 La Gaffelière has an intriguing, complex nose, a mélange of red and black fruit, cigar box, undergrowth and mint, quite mercurial in the glass as it opens with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with lithe tannins, a beautiful seam of acidity and perhaps the most satin-like texture I have encountered on a young La Gaffelière. It sashays to a harmonious and precise finish and lingers with wonderful mineralité. This is a magnificent prospect.
