Mas de Daumas Gassac

Founded by former glovemaker Aimé Guibert in the 1970's, Mas de Daumas Gassac was originally supposed to be a simple country retreat until friend and oenologist Henri Enjalbert convinced him to plant the estate with vines. The first vintage was 1978 and took place under the supervision of the legendary Emile Peynaud; consultant to Chateaux Margaux and Leoville-Las Cases. Since then Daumas Gassac has been at the top of Languedoc's fine wine pyramid, becoming justifiably known as a regional Grand Cru.

Mas de Daumas Gassac Rouge 1985 (4x75cl)

Wine Advocate (95)

A largely academic data point for longtime collectors out there, the 1985 Rouge VDP de l'Herault is nearing the end of its life, but it remains immensely enjoyable. Tobacco and cedar notes meld into the very definition of cigar box aromas. There's a bit of cassis fruit hanging on, while the medium-weight body is supported by silky-smooth tannins and a long finish. Tasted at the domaine, so it's likely that bottles with less pristine provenance may not show as well. Drink up in the next couple of years.

Mas de Daumas Gassac Rouge 2017 (6x75cl)

Decanter (93)

There's a little bit of reduction showing on this barrel sample, but also lots of classic blackcurrant and red plum fruit. The quality of fruit revealed on the palate is very exciting, fresh and precise, with dramatic density. It has a little less overt floral charm than the youthful 2016, but more of the light herbal bitterness in the finish which chiefly constitutes this wine’s Languedoc character. Potentially a fine wine in the classic, long-lasting mould of 2010.
