The historic estate of Castello dei Rampolla is held in tremendously high regard by Antoni Galloni (Vinous), the world's foremost writer on Italian wine, who considers that the Tuscan legend produces "some of the most compelling wines of Tuscany, and the world, for that matter". Nestled deep in the heart of the stunning Chianti Classico region, the team at Castello dei Rampolla pursue both biodynamic farming, and minimalist winemaking to give their wines a "feeling of transparency that is incredibly distinctive" which makes them, in Galloni's eyes, "one of the real stars of Chianti Classico".
Located in Panzano's famous Conce d'Oro (Golden Basin) district, the winery of Castello dei Rampolla is surrounded by a natural amphitheatre of breathtakingly beautiful hillside vineyards. Something of a maverick estate, inherited by the noble di Napoli family as part of a wedding dowry in 1739, Castello dei Rampolla is proudly "one of Tuscany's most intriguingly unconventional estates" (Wine Spectator). Alceo di Napoli revolutionised the estate upon inheriting the estate in 1965, so much so that the prestige cuvée of Castello dei Rampolla now bears his name! We are delighted to offer this very cuvée today.

Wine Advocate (98)This is a classic beauty. The 2019 d'Alceo, made with 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Petit Verdot, is dark and enriched, but magically, it is never heavy or bulky. It carries its weight with feather-like grace backed by dry tannins and lovely fruit layering. There is blackcurrant, kirsch, blackberry liqueur, exotic spice, black rose and crushed stone. That mineral note stands out like a filigree of shiny silver stitched through the wine's rich, velvety texture. Production is 13,749 bottles and 200 magnums. |

Inky red fruit, spice, cedar, tobacco, menthol and licorice are some of the notes that build in a statuesque Sammarco that dazzles from start to finish. A wine of stunning textural richness and intensity, Sammarco is translucent, sculpted and full of character. All the elements are so well balanced. Rose petal, cedar, tobacco and mint linger on the eternal finish. The 2016 is a magical wine that can be, surprisingly, enjoyed now or cellared for a number of years. Wine Advocate (93)The 2016 Chianti Classico impresses for the heightened level of vibrant freshness and aromatic precision that distinguishes it in a large playing field. Proprietor Maurizia di Napoli tells me that the 2016 growing season was not without its ups and downs. Farming was difficult, and not all sites came to ripeness with the same consistency because it was cooler toward the end of the growing season. Castello dei Rampolla avoids the use of sulfites in winemaking. However, these results are stunning, especially as this is positioned as a more affordable wine. The blend is 85% Sangiovese, 12% Cabernet Sauvignon and 3% Merlot. |
