Château Saint Pierre

About Château Saint Pierre

Considered one of the oldest estates in the Médoc, Château Saint Pierre has well-sited vines that were first planted in 1693 and took its name from Baron de Saint-Pierre, who acquired the estate in 1767. Over the decades, the estate was fragmented after several inheritances and was only reunified in 1982 through the mammoth effort undertaken by Henri Martin. Ever keen to embrace technology, Château Saint Pierre was one of the first in the Médoc to use satellites to help with grape picking. Underrated for years, they are claiming their deserved place in the limelight with lush, full but not overly assertive wine.

95-97 Barrel sample. Darkly dense, but with fruit that bears the weight of wood and tannins, this is opulent in its texture, beautifully structured, the Cabernet blackcurrant flavors shining through.

Wine Advocate (97)

The final blend of 78% Cabernet Sauvignon and 22% Merlot has resulted in a wine of great power, stature, gravitas and density. The wine has a black purple color and a brilliant nose of scorched earth, creme de cassis, espresso roast, blackberries, truffles and licorice. Full-bodied, extremely powerful, yet with abundant sweet tannin, this stunning effort should prove sensational if given 7-10 years of cellaring. It should also last for 30-40 years.

Jeb Dunnuck (97)

This 17-hectare estate has been rejuvenated by owner Jean-Louis Triaud and is certainly producing some of the top wines from the appellation today. I tasted the deep, inky-colored 2015 Château Saint-Pierre twice and it’s reminiscent of the 2010, only with more elegance. In 2015 the wine is a blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Merlot and 6% Cabernet Franc and it spent 14 months in 50% new and 50% once used barrels. Chocolate covered dark fruits, damp earth, tobacco leaf, and lead pencil shaving-like notes emerge from this huge, concentrated beauty that has building tannin and a huge mid-palate. It’s an incredible wine that builds with time in the glass, has no hard edges and is going to 3-4 decades of life. Bravo!

Saint-Pierre 2016 (12x75cl)

Wine Advocate (94-96)

The 2016 Chateau Saint-Pierre is a blend of 73% Cabernet Sauvignon, 21% Merlot and 6% Cabernet Franc picked between 29 September and 3 October for the Merlot and 5-17 October for the Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine is matured is 50% new oak. The Cabernet comes through strongly on the nose as you would expect: quite intense black fruit, graphite and just a touch of dried herbs. There is lovely definition and focus on display. The palate is well balanced with grainy tannin, a crisp line of acidity, classic in style in keeping with the style of the vintage with very fine mineralité and tension towards the sprightly finish. It is one of the most Pauillac-like Château Saint-Pierres that I have tasted, a very well crafted, almost understated but sophisticated wine that will age for 20 to 30 years. This is a fantastic Saint Julien that may well rest at the top of my banded score.

Cloves, black pepper, damson, oak swirl and vanilla bean, definitely a more complex and confident nose than many - and the profusion of aromatics adds layers to the wine but doesn't overpower. As the wine opens in the glass, you get attractive raspberry and cassis notes, and an uplift or crushed mint freshness held together with fine tannins. Far from a blockbuster year in St-Julien but this is one of the best; impressive En Primeur and moving up a notch at this point.

Jeb Dunnuck (94-97)

Checking in as a blend of 77% Cabernet Sauvignon and 23% Merlot from very old vines and still aging in 50% new French oak, the 2018 Château Saint-Pierre reveals a saturated purple color to go with rich, full-bodied aromas and flavors of crème de cassis, graphite, and spicy oak. Rich, powerful, and concentrated, yet also with gorgeous purity and freshness, it’s a serious, age-worthy wine that’s going to need 7-8 years of bottle age but will be very long-lived.

The 2019 Château Saint-Pierre (Saint Julien) checks in as 79% Cabernet Sauvignon and 21% Merlot. It's a big, rich, powerful wine loaded with notions of blackcurrants, smoked earth, chocolate, and violet notes. It shows more elegance on the palate and is medium to full-bodied, has beautiful tannins, and a terrific sense of freshness and purity. It's going to need 4-6 years of bottle age yet will drink well for 30 years or more.
