Matured in 80% new oak, the 2013 Charmes Chambertin Grand Cru was bottled in December. It has a straightforward bouquet with brambly red berry fruit, perhaps a little rustic and missing a little complexity. It has plenty of sappy black fruit, good structure, but needs a little more flesh and persistence on the bay-leaf infused finish. Cellar this for a couple of years and see what comes out the other side.Inc. VAT£2,174.47 -

The 2020 Gevrey-Chambertin Lavaux Saint-Jacques 1er Cru shows better than the sample tasted in London, hence my higher score. It has an attractive, though not compelling bouquet with rose petal and incense-tinged red fruit, predominantly raspberry and cranberry. The palate is medium-bodied with some chewiness on the entry, plenty of extract here, a little powdery in texture with what you might describe as a "gutsy" finish. It just needs a little more flair.Inc. VAT£1,264.87 -

The 2012 Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru comes from 0.42 hectares of 50-year-old vines. This is another exemplary expression of this vineyard with a more sensual bouquet than the Charmes-Chambertin: perfumed raspberry and fresh strawberries billowing from the glass. The palate is medium-bodied, very well poised and sporting well-judged acidity. There is a natural, refined composure to this Mazis-Chambertin, which does not short-change you in fruit intensity on the rounded, velvety finish. This is probably the best wine I have tasted from this domaine.Inc. VAT£2,811.67 -

The 2013 Mazis Chambertin Grand Cru was bottled in December and aged in 100% new oak. Even though there is more new wood than the Charmes, here on the Mazis I find superior integration and it is in sync with the fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with firm but supple tannin, good body and density but with sufficient elegance on the finish. This is a broad-shouldered Mazis-Chambertin that should reward cellaring.Inc. VAT£2,740.87 -
