Vincent Girardin
Over ten generations of Girardins originated in Santenay until 1982 when Jean Girardin split up the vineyards between his four children. His son, Vincent, bought more vineyards and began a negociant business moving to Meursault. There is an emphasis on purity of fruit with minimal oak in both the reds and whites. Approachable when young, the Grand Cru have the potential for cellaring.

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-94)Bright pale primrose, with a reductive nose. There’s a very significant weight to the fruit though, with good acidity behind, a little yellow fruit then a cushion of broad-based orchard fruit behind. A punchy, energetic finish. Drink from 2030-2036. Tasted: November 2023. |

Vinous (92-94)The 2019 Meursault Les Genevrières 1er Cru comes from a 0.42-hectare parcel of 55-year-old vines. This is a step up in quality, delivering impressive, mineral-rich citrus fruit that conveys real vibrancy. The palate is well balanced with touches of praline and nectarine and a lovely build in the mouth while maintaining fine tension, leading to a spicy and quite persistent finish. This is a quality Genevrières that should age well over the next two decades. |

Vinous (90-92)The 2020 Meursault Les Genevrières 1er Cru has an attractive orange blossom and apricot scented nose, perhaps just needing a little more mineralité. The palate is medium-bodied with fine crisp acidity, fresh with Golden Delicious and orange rind note. Quite linear towards the finish, this is a very approachable Meursault that should age well over the next 12-15 years. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (91-93)Six barrels in all, from various sources. Clear bright mid yellow. A little bit more savoury, some pepper here, leaner and finer in profile than the Charmes but not quite as complete overall. Decent persistence. Drink from 2026-2030. |

Vinous (96)The 2017 Meursault Les Perrières 1er Cru is noticeably pale in color. It has a voluminous, powerful nose with quite a generous slab of new oak, but there is plenty of fruit behind it, ready to absorb it with bottle age. The palate is fresh on the entry with vibrant acidity, and more malic than its peers, then taut and linear, with a vein of sour lemon mixed with spice toward the very persistent finish. Très Perrières. This deserves several years in a cool, damp cellar. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting in Savigny-lès-Beaune. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (93-95)Mid to full lemon yellow. The bouquet here displays a class and a weight of fruit over and above the others. There is impressive depth through the middle of the palate, then a saline note at the back, as the minerality of the vineyard punches through the undoubted flesh. A good long finish. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: November 2023. |

Vinous (87-89)The 2021 Meursault Les Narvaux has a much more backward/reticent nose than its peers despite coaxing. The palate is well balanced with orange rind and touches of marmalade, and though 15% new wood is used, it feels like more on the finish. It will need time for that to be subsumed, so afford it a couple of years in bottle. |

Vinous (92-94)The 2021 Puligny-Montrachet Le Champ Gain 1er Cru has a pleasant nose with citrus fruit, white chocolate, grapefruit and a touch of walnut. The palate is well balanced with fine acidity, focused and vibrant with plenty of tension and mineralité on the finish. Very fine. |

Vinous (92-94)The 2019 Puligny-Montrachet Les Combettes 1er Cru comes from 0.80 hectares of vines up to 45 years old, located close to the woods. Unlike the other two Puligny Premier Crus, it comes from Girardin’s own vines. This has a more clinical bouquet of fine delineation and terroir expression, featuring crushed limestone, cooking apple and a light sea spray note. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity and quite saline in the mouth, getting the saliva flowing. Good concentration on the finish. This is an excellent Puligny that should age with style. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (93-96)5 Star Wine. The famous plot in 2021 because of the success in protecting the vines from frost when all around failed. The recipe was to light the bougies early and place them at double density, and replace if necessary during the night. This is really gorgeous. With a manged opulence, a perfect thread of mineral backbone, a finish that makes one salivate. A level of concentration over and above Perrières. Consider a 5th star – and say yes! Drink from 2026-2033. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (93-96)From Ez Folatières, purchased as must. A lime streak runs through the mid yellow colour. This has notable density of bouquet without showing much detail yet. More substantial than the racy Pucelles, but retaining its own lively character behind the substantial flesh. Dense, generous, and with class. Drink from 2029-2038. Tasted: November 2023. |

Vinous (89-91)The 2019 Puligny-Montrachet Les Pucelles 1er Cru comes from bought must, the vines managed virtually organically except for one treatment during the growing season. This has a tightly wound, rather laconic bouquet that, despite coaxing, remains stubbornly mute. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, taut and fresh on the entry yet not quite achieving the same tension and nuance as the Puligny Champ Gain tasted alongside. |

Vinous (88-90)The 2019 Corton-Charlemagne "Quintessence" Grand Cru comes from the Aloxe-Corton side, from a climat, and is made with purchased grapes from vines around 55–60 years old. The rather muted nose has trouble following on from the clearly more expressive Puligny Les Combettes. The palate is balanced with a fine bead of acidity, but the truth is that I find this missing the complexity and mineralité of a Grand Cru, surpassed by some of Girardin’s excellent Premier Crus this vintage. |

Vinous (92-94)The 2020 Corton-Charlemagne "Quintessence" Grand Cru comes from a single parcel in Aloxe-Corton. This has more complexity and energy on the nose compared to the regular cuvée with fresh pineapple, grapefruit, crushed stone and a touch of mirabelle. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, harmonious and quite refined, not powerful on the finish but linear and poised. Eight barrels produced. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (93-95)From the lower part of Le Charlemagne. There is a regular cuvee too. Lively fresh primrose. At the moment the oak shows a little stronger than the wine on the first nose. The fruit is pretty substantial on the palate, starting at the front, then gracefully continues through to a stony and salty finish. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: November 2023. |
