Vinous (98)The 2013 Riesling Scharzhofberger Spätlese was opened for comparison, as 2013 was a similarly challenging vintage to 2023. The nose offers a deep, ethereal breath of lifted hayflower, chamomile and tansy steeped in lemon oil. These sinus-clearing aromas color Mirabelle jelly on the palate and lead to naked stone, to slate vibrating with lemon zestiness, calm now but exquisitely radiant and intense with depth. The lightness of body is amazing and the elegance disarming, as is the length. All of this has something of soothing, healing balm. |

Wine Advocate (98)The 2019 Scharzhofberger Spätlese is brilliant, digitally precise and spicy on the clear, elegant, deep and terroir-typical nose with mango and papaya aromas. Tropical fruit aromas on the juicy, elegant, refined and seamless palate lead to a salty-piquant, mouth-watering and stimulating finish with great finesse and precision. This is Scharzhofberger at its very best and a Spätlese close to perfection! Tasted in April 2020. |

Vinous (92)Influence of botrytis has steered this bottling in a very dried-fruit direction, with purple plum, white peach and quince on the nose taking on a pasted impression on the palpably dense, glossy palate. There is also a delicate aura of raw mushroom. Licks of cinnamon stick and lime zest add to the vibrancy and tactile grip of a severely concentrated finish. This definitely needs some time. |

Wine Advocate (97)The 2019 Wiltinger Braune Kupp Auslese is very clear, refined and flinty on the elegant and subtle nose with its rose petal and wood aromas, similar yet even finer than in the Spätlese to be auctioned. On the palate, this is a piquant, fresh and grippy Auslese with racy acidity that cuts the sweetness and pairs with the mineral backbone of this refined and frisky Auslese. The salinity and piquancy are already exciting yet still nervous and youthful—this should be an extremely buoyant Auslese in 20 years. Bottled with 7.5% alcohol. Tasted from AP 7-20 in June 2020. |
