Once again the mouthfeel of the notably more imposingly-scaled flavors is sleek with excellent minerality that really comes up on the super-saline finish that goes on and on. But what I really admire about the '16 Bèze is the texture because it's at once muscular yet highly seductive and refined. This is a very, very powerful wine that is seriously impressive in every respect. In a word, brilliant. |

Burghound (95-98)While the wood treatment is certainly evident it's more subtle on the overtly cool and restrained nose that is markedly spicy with its combination of relatively high-toned aromas of red cherry, raspberry, rose petal and a suggestion of earth. There is excellent power and punch to the large-scaled flavors that are a combination of power and refinement while being blessed with an abundance of sappy dry extract that imparts a seductive quality to the mouth coating, hugely long and very firmly structured finish. It's going to be interesting in 25 or 30 years' time to see which of these is the better wine, assuming that one of them will be! |

True, it is showing a little more wood at the moment, but I also find more fruit – raspberry and wild strawberry – interlaced with shavings of black truffle and forest fern. The palate is medium-bodied with supple but firm tannins. This is endowed with impressive depth and body weight and yet it retains disarming elegance on a finish that fans out gloriously. "This is the business" is the phrase that passed through my mind as I tried to keep a stoic face after encountering this fabulous Clos-de-Bèze. |

Shimmering red fruit, crushed stone, orange pith and pressed iris petals make up the bouquet. You could lose yourself in these aromas. The palate is beautifully balanced with fine-boned tannins. This is tensile, mineral-driven, nicely poised and exuberant, with a sensual and pixelated finish. This just drives home its class. Brilliant. |

Now with 15 years on the clock, it is showing better than it used to. The nose is broody and taciturn at first, eventually revealing dusky, brambly red fruit with hints of cola and soy. The palate is medium-bodied with a fleshy core of red fruit and well-judged acidity. The tannins are much finer than I recall, having softened with time, and there is an appealing weightless intensity toward the finish. No, it is not one of the Charles Rousseau’s best 1999s, but it is finally beginning to show its class. Drink now-2020+. Tasted January 2014. |

All of them were poured for two people: my wife and I. This last bottle is sublime. That same old spellbinding nose that envelops the senses, quite lush in keeping with the vintages, beautifully defined with traces of hung game creeping in. There is great tannic structure here, again, just a little gaminess towards the finish, but so elegant and refined that you instantly fall for its charms. Tasted at home in Guildford. |

After 23 years there remains plenty of dark berry fruit on the nose mixed with sous-bois, melted tar and brown spices. Compared to the 1996, it does not quite deliver the same precision. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannins, quite introspective and missing the joie-de-vivre I seek from Rousseau's wines. It seems almost weighed down by reputation. I wonder if this peaked around the time I last drank it? Tasted at Bistro de l'Hôtel in Beaune. |

Vinous (93-95)The 2020 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru has a quintessential nose for this vineyard, quite flamboyant yet still with that Rousseau sense of control and elegance, a melange of red and black fruit, touches of wet stone and undergrowth. The palate is medium-bodied with a supple entry, fine weight and density, veering more towards the red fruit profile with a dash of black pepper on the finish. This was once the weak card in Rousseau's pack. That is the case no longer. |

Vinous (97)Many years ago I bought two or three bottles of the 1985 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Saint-Jacques 1er Cru for a price that now begs belief. All of them were poured for two people: my wife and I. This last bottle is sublime. That same old spellbinding nose that envelops the senses, quite lush in keeping with the vintages, beautifully defined with traces of hung game creeping in. There is great tannic structure here, again, just a little gaminess towards the finish, but so elegant and refined that you instantly fall for its charms. Tasted at home in Guildford. |

Vinous (90)The 1995 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos St.-Jacques 1er Cru is a vintage that I have not tasted for a decade. After 23 years there remains plenty of dark berry fruit on the nose mixed with sous-bois, melted tar and brown spices. Compared to the 1996, it does not quite deliver the same precision. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannins, quite introspective and missing the joie-de-vivre I seek from Rousseau's wines. It seems almost weighed down by reputation. I wonder if this peaked around the time I last drank it? Tasted at Bistro de l'Hôtel in Beaune. |

This particular bottle demonstrates more structure towards the finish than I expected, exerting stupendous grip to remind you that it might be almost 20 years old, but it has 20 or perhaps even 30 years ahead of it. Vinous (97)A last minute addition, Rousseau's 2002 Clos St. Jacques nearly stole the show (actually it did!), proving why it is revered among Burgundy lovers. Arguably one of the youngest and most vibrant wines of the evening, the Clos St. Jacques impressed for its intense fruit and phenomenal balance. It was the perfect ending to a fabulous night of food, wine and conversation. |

Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (91-94)(this cuvee, the Clos de Beze and the Chambertin are aged in 100% new barriques Good bright red. Explosive, perfumed nose offers black raspberry, cassis, rose petal and spicy oak. Juicy, floral and aromatic in the mouth, with cassis and violet flavors that are sweetened but not overwhelmed by the new oak. Very dense, chewy, rich wine with superb persistence. This wine also showed a strong cassis character in vintages 1999 and 1996, notes Corinne. |
