Once again the mouthfeel of the notably more imposingly-scaled flavors is sleek with excellent minerality that really comes up on the super-saline finish that goes on and on. But what I really admire about the '16 Bèze is the texture because it's at once muscular yet highly seductive and refined. This is a very, very powerful wine that is seriously impressive in every respect. In a word, brilliant. |

Burghound (95-98)While the wood treatment is certainly evident it's more subtle on the overtly cool and restrained nose that is markedly spicy with its combination of relatively high-toned aromas of red cherry, raspberry, rose petal and a suggestion of earth. There is excellent power and punch to the large-scaled flavors that are a combination of power and refinement while being blessed with an abundance of sappy dry extract that imparts a seductive quality to the mouth coating, hugely long and very firmly structured finish. It's going to be interesting in 25 or 30 years' time to see which of these is the better wine, assuming that one of them will be! |

True, it is showing a little more wood at the moment, but I also find more fruit – raspberry and wild strawberry – interlaced with shavings of black truffle and forest fern. The palate is medium-bodied with supple but firm tannins. This is endowed with impressive depth and body weight and yet it retains disarming elegance on a finish that fans out gloriously. "This is the business" is the phrase that passed through my mind as I tried to keep a stoic face after encountering this fabulous Clos-de-Bèze. |

Shimmering red fruit, crushed stone, orange pith and pressed iris petals make up the bouquet. You could lose yourself in these aromas. The palate is beautifully balanced with fine-boned tannins. This is tensile, mineral-driven, nicely poised and exuberant, with a sensual and pixelated finish. This just drives home its class. Brilliant. |

Now with 15 years on the clock, it is showing better than it used to. The nose is broody and taciturn at first, eventually revealing dusky, brambly red fruit with hints of cola and soy. The palate is medium-bodied with a fleshy core of red fruit and well-judged acidity. The tannins are much finer than I recall, having softened with time, and there is an appealing weightless intensity toward the finish. No, it is not one of the Charles Rousseau’s best 1999s, but it is finally beginning to show its class. Drink now-2020+. Tasted January 2014. |

Vinous (90+)Medium red. Red fruits and tobacco on the nose, with some funky hints of truffley evolution. Silky and fine-grained on entry, then classically dry but more harmonious in the middle palate than the nose suggests. Clamps down on the finish, showing a cool and slightly ungiving character and an edge of acidity. I expected a bit more expansiveness and sweetness but Cyrielle Rousseau noted that she and her father Eric find their 1999s rather ungiving so far. Vinous (94-96)The 2019 Mazy-Chambertin Grand Cru is clearly a step up from the Charmes-Chambertin, offering deeper and more intense red fruit, rose petal and undergrowth aromas. There is also a more tangible marine influence at play here. The palate is medium-bodied with very good structure. Elegant and poised toward the finish, which leaves hints of tobacco and truffle on the aftertaste. Superb. Quintessentially Rousseau. |

Wine Advocate (96)The 2014 Ruchottes Chambertin Grand Cru takes time to unfurl in the glass, eventually opening out with dark berry fruit, a touch of briary and blueberry, and a suggestion of sea spray. It is paradoxically intense but subtle. The palate is medium-bodied and here, it just shows the wood a little more than say, the Clos de la Roche. There is good density here, but it is the acidity that drives this forward and imparts so much tension. This is a Ruchottes that rivets you to the spot. |

Vinous (92-94)(30% new oak): Good medium red. Pure, restrained aromas and flavors of black cherry, licorice and minerals. Silky and fine-grained on entry, then juicy and tighter in the middle, showing strong calcaire energy as the mother rock here isn't much more than a foot below the surface. This rich, firmly tannic wine boasts a long, rising finish featuring black fruits and violet. Impeccably balanced from the start, but this youthfully austere wine will need time in the cellar. The estate is slowly replanting this vineyard, so this 2016 is a mix of old and young vines. |
