The 2009 Pommard Pezerolles emerges from the glass with freshly cut roses, raspberries and sweet spices. This is an utterly refined Pommard. There is plenty of energy and vigor, but the fruit has more than enough pedigree and depth to stand up to the tannins. This is the estate's smallest cuvée; in 2009 there are only two barrels.

The 2020 Chambolle-Musigny Les Charmes 1er Cru, which includes 40% whole cluster, was quite backward on the nose, a bit broody and refusing to come out ‘n play. The palate is medium-bodied with finely integrated oak, quite chalky in texture, very good tension with a linear and energetic finish. Discrete, yet it should blossom with bottle age. Watch this.

The 2019 Nuits Saint-Georges Clos St. Marc 1er Cru is from Rion’s monopole, just under a hectare on Ostrea limestone marl, soil rich in fossilized oyster shells. That mineral element really defines the nose, scents of shucked oyster shells and limestone permeating the transparent red fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, superb structure, a keen line of acidity and a beautifully structured and persistent finish. Outstanding.

The 2018 Nuits Saint-Georges Clos des Argillières 1er Cru does not quite deliver the vivacity or delineation of Liger-Belair's Clos des Grandes Vignes - a little oaky, but there is sufficient fruit to support it. The Potel 2005 Vosne-Romanee Les Gaudichots offers a nose of cherry, red raspberry and spice box. Cinnamon and white pepper are among those that hitch a ride on the creamy palate, where intensely ripe, sweet red fruits, raw meat, and suggestions of caramelized root vegetables expand to fill all recesses of the mouth. Concentrated and complex manifestations of meat, roasted root vegetables, and mineral along with distilled red fruit suggestions inform the superbly long, multi-registered finish. Amazingly, there are three whole barrels of this.

Some winemakers make a comparison with 2003 – but there were more than 100 days between flowering and picking in 2007 and 2008. 2007 was less delicate than we thought; I was tempted to bottle in September but found the wines were not ready.' Much more delicate than the Clos St-Denis. Wild strawberry fruit aromas plus delicate spice, and then more marked spice on the palate. (about 50% frost; made from very old, low-yielding vines): Bright, light yellow-green. Pungently mineral scents of lime zest, white flowers, crushed rock, anise, caraway seed and mint. At once vibrant and thick, with flavors of underripe pineapple and grapefruit pith displaying terrific energy and lift. This beauty expanded with air to reveal a silkier texture, outstanding purity and a captivating crushed-chalk dustiness. Incidentally, Pierre-Yves Colin told me that he's currently enjoying white wines from his 2003 through 2006 vintages at home--but nothing younger than that.

(4.3 grams per liter acidity): Bright, pale yellow. Restrained aromas of lemon and vanilla. At once dense and penetrating, showing an urgent Riesling-like quality and noteworthy energy to its citrus and mineral flavors. Densely packed, plush and long but youthfully backward. This seriously concentrated wine has the stuffing and structure to age but is not particularly austere today.

Vinous (92+)

(4.3 grams per liter acidity): Bright, pale yellow. Restrained aromas of lemon and vanilla. At once dense and penetrating, showing an urgent Riesling-like quality and noteworthy energy to its citrus and mineral flavors. Densely packed, plush and long but youthfully backward. This seriously concentrated wine has the stuffing and structure to age but is not particularly austere today.
