Wine Advocate (90)

The 1992 Petrus is clearly one of the two candidates for the wine of the vintage. The normal production of 4,500 cases was severely reduced to only 2,600 cases, resulting in an atypically concentrated, powerful, rich wine with a dark, saturated ruby/purple color, a tight but promising nose of sweet black-cherry fruit, vanillin, caramel, and herb-tinged mocha notes. Concentrated and powerful, with superb density of fruit and richness, as well as wonderful sweetness to its tannin, this is a brilliant effort for the vintage. The wine requires 3-5 years of cellaring and should keep for 15-20+.

Deep ruby in color, here you find truffle, dark chocolate, coffee bean, cigar box, black cherry and dark plums. Full bodied, elegant, velvety, opulent, sweet and fresh, the presence on the palate is silk and velvet in the texture with purity and sweetness to the fruits. The wine is hedonistic as well as intellectual, and a little bit firm. There is serious aging potential. The wine really sticks with you, for over 60 seconds in the finish. Give this at least 15 or more years in the cellar to develop before popping a cork.

Bright, green-tinged yellow. Aromas of lime, ginger and mint call to mind a mini-Chevalier-Montrachet. Juicy, pure and tightly wound, showing none of the exotic character of the Chatenière. This very concentrated, dry, linear wine finishes with terrific slowly unfolding length and precision--a bit austere today but not hard. Amazingly, the importer still has tiny stocks of such legendary ports as the 1970, 1963, and 1962 Nacionals. In most vintages the production of Quinta do Noval Nacional is no more than 250-275 cases. The 1970,1963,1962 and 1994 are candidates to achieve perfect scores. The 1963 Nacional's opaque purple color is remarkable, looking more like a 1992 than a 33-year old port. The wine possessed a fabulously smoky, cassis, black-cherry, peppery nose. After thirty minutes in the glass, fruitcake notes and more evolved aromas emerged. This port is so concentrated it defies belief, with extraordinary balance, and, like its two siblings, well-integrated alcohol and tannin. The impression is one of a silky, succulent, voluptuously-textured mouthful of exceptionally extracted port. This is a legend in the making. In 30-40 years it may well be considered, along with the 1931, as one of the greatest ports ever produced. Those lucky few with a bottle or two should plan to hold onto them for another decade before pulling the cork. It, too, is a hundred-year port.

The 2008 Champagne Rare Rosé is straight-up sensational. Only the second time they’ve produced this cuvée, it offers a deep, full-bodied, powerful yet chiseled and laser-focused style carrying loads of wild strawberry fruit as well as notes of orange blossom, spice, and crushed rocks. Backward, austere, yet simply loaded with potential, it needs a solid 4-5 years of bottle age and will drink brilliantly for two decades or more.

Petrol, graphite, smoke, slate and white stone fruits grace the palate in the 2012 Chablis Montée de Tonnerre. Vivid and utterly crystalline, Raveneaus's 2012 is a great essay into to qualities of one of the great - maybe the single greatest - 1er Cru site in Chablis. The 2012 has a bit more new oak than is typically the case, as most of the new barrels in this vintage were used here. A thrilling finish rounds things off in style.

There is an interesting minty hint to the wonderfully elegant and overtly floral-suffused aromas of citrus confit, shellfish and green apple. The 2021 Chablis Blanchots Grand Cru has the most "classic" or what you might call "old school" bouquets amongst Raveneau's 2021s and I love it: razor-sharp, struck flint and granite scents. Once again there is just enough wood to mention on the green fruit, shellfish, quinine-suffused nose. The sleekly muscular, rich, powerful and serious larger-scaled flavors are unusually refined for Valmur before concluding in a driving, bone-dry and hugely long finale. This is a big but impeccably well-balanced effort that should easily repay 12 to 15 years of cellaring. In short, this is seriously good.

Wine Advocate (87)

In 1991, young Philippe Engel decided to utilize a higher percentage of new oak, extend his cold maceration prior to fermentation to 4-5 days, and put his wines in the bottle without filtration. The results are wines that rival his 1990s. The Echezeaux sweetness is a characteristic of the Clos de Vougeot and Grands Echezeaux. The 1991 Clos de Vougeot reveals a ripe cassis component, as well as a chunky, rich, fleshy texture. The tannins do not dominate either the Clos de Vougeot or Grands Echezeaux. Rather, the wines are characterized by their perfumed personalities, expansive, rich, supple flavors, and velvety textures. Both are exceptionally well made 1991s. The Grands Echezeaux displays more dimension to its bouquet and flavors. Both wines should drink well for a decade. Good full red. Very subdued nose hints at redcurrant, spicy herbs and underbrush. Highly concentrated but youthfully tight, with a lightly saline quality to the complex flavors of blueberry, wild herbs, sandalwood and mocha. Just this side of thick but its superb balance of sweetness and acidity keeps it vibrant in the mouth. The long, ripely tannic finish features an exhilarating salty minerality.

Jeb Dunnuck (98+)

The 2008 Champagne Rare Rosé is straight-up sensational. Only the second time they’ve produced this cuvée, it offers a deep, full-bodied, powerful yet chiseled and laser-focused style carrying loads of wild strawberry fruit as well as notes of orange blossom, spice, and crushed rocks. Backward, austere, yet simply loaded with potential, it needs a solid 4-5 years of bottle age and will drink brilliantly for two decades or more.

89-91 Barrel sample. With sweet caramel aromas, this is a jammy wine, all sweet fruits, richness and not much structure. A wine that shows warmth and ripe fruits.

Pale, green-tinged yellow. Reticent aromas of mirabelle and iodine. Then tight but sappy in the mouth, with lovely inner-mouth perfume and lift to the lemon, wet stone and mineral flavors. This tactile, classic wine demonstrates the terroir more than it does the vintage. Colder, clay-rich soils, as is the case here and in Montee de Tonnerre, did very well in 2006, noted Raveneau.

A wine of textural depth and resonance, the 2018 Chablis Monts-Mains 1er Cru shows terrific power and richness in its broad, sweeping feel. Even with all of its density and overtness, the 2018 retains terrific freshness to balance things out.

The almost painfully intense middleweight flavors possess strikingly good transparency on the borderline aggressively stony, focused and impressively long finish. I very much like the inherent sophistication as well as the overall sense of balance. In a word, stunning.

The 2009 Chablis Blanchots is deep, powerful and intense, particularly in the way it blossoms on the palate with layers of radiant fruit. This is a striking wine graced with an expressive, open personality that resonates through to the generous finish. I especially like the raciness of the fruit. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2024.

Vinous (95-97)

The 2021 Chablis Blanchots Grand Cru has the most "classic" or what you might call "old school" bouquets amongst Raveneau's 2021s and I love it: razor-sharp, struck flint and granite scents. The palate is very taut on the entry, linear, a vertical Chablis that feels very long with a saline finish that lingers in the mouth. What a superb Blanchots - one for Chablis purists.

More exotic aromas of grapefruit and lime oil. Fat and round in the mouth but distinctly closed today; comes across as less filled in than the Clos, and drier in style. This was a knockout from barrel a year ago, but today I find more texture than terroirBut then this was bottled on the morning of my visit.

I may be underrating this.
