Vinous (96)Aldo Conterno’s 1990 Barolo Riserva Granbussia, a wine from the estate’s glory days, more than lives up to its reputation. The Granbussia is darker and noticeably softer than the Monfortino, signs that Aldo Conterno long had a more modernist leaning than his brother, Giovanni Conterno, who made the 1990 at the family’s Giacomo Conterno estate. Both wines are a real pleasure to drink, not just taste. This flight is incredibly instructive, but also hits all the high notes on the pleasure scale. |

Vinous (91)Pale yellow. Bracing aromas of lemon, lime peel, tangerine and crushed stone. At once pliant and juicy, with a fine-grained, round texture to its fresh stone fruit and citrus flavors. Not about power but tasty and stylish. A lovely, persistent village wine. (Snap up Ente's Aligote or Bourgogne Blanc if you can find them. The former wine is remarkably rich for the variety, showing a sexy toasty quality, while the latter boasts terriific citrus cut and a lot of personality for its appellation. Both fully capitalize on what Ente describes as a classic vintage for him in terms of ripeness, acidity and pH.) |

Wine Advocate (73)An aroma highly suggestive of freshly brewed tea and ripe tangerines suggests overripeness. On the palate, the wine is diffuse, lacking direction, and is somewhat watery and uninteresting. This is a curious and unappealing rendition of Batailley. Anticipated maturity: Now-probably in serious decline. Last tasted, 2/79. |

Wine Advocate (96)Two great back to back vintages are the 1990 and 1989. The more developed 1990 boasts an incredible perfume of hickory wood, coffee, smoked meat, Asian spices, black cherries, and blackberries. Lush, opulent, and full-bodied, it is a fully mature, profound Beaucastel that will last another 15-20 years. |

Wine Advocate (78)For some reason, Boyd-Cantenac tends to be a hard, sometimes dull wine and the 1986 has these characteristics plus diluted flavors, no doubt caused by the excessive vineyard yields, as well as a lenient selection process at the chateau. This medium-bodied, rather tannic wine should be consumed early in its life because of the lack of extract. Anticipated maturity: Now. Last tasted, 3/90. |

Wine Advocate (92)Medium garnet colored, the 2013 Cheval Blanc has a captivating, open-knit nose of roses and lilacs over a core of fragrant soil, charcuterie, kirsch and raspberry preserves plus a waft of stewed plums. Medium-bodied, chewy and with tons of spring to its step, the palate is delicately fruited with an earthy finish. |

Jancis Robinson (18.5)Served at The Clove Club's Bordeaux lunch with roast foie gras, loquat, hazelnut and amaranth - a particularly successful combination. Deep orangey gold. Masses of botrytis exhibited on the rich nose full of pungent lanolin. The finish was fresh and clean and the sweetness, if on a scale of 1 to 10, would be about 7. Lots of weight and presence - really very majestic. No hurry whatsoever to drink this. |

Wine Advocate (90)The 1988 Romanée Saint-Vivant Grand Cru from Domaine Leroy was, of course, the debut vintage released under Lalou Bize-Leroy's name. Now at 28 years of age, it is probably beginning its descent from its peak in the 1990s although it continues to give drinking pleasure. Deep in color for the vintage, it offers pleasant cranberry, undergrowth, crushed violet petal and clove aromas that feel a little dimmed by the passing years. The palate is a little chunky compared to more recent vintages that I have tasted, quite tart in the mouth and conveying an almost Bordeaux-like structure on the finish that now feels a little short. Any bottles should be consumed in the near future because it is in gentle decline, albeit from a high peak. Tasted September 2016. |

Vinous (93+)Full yellow color. Musky aromas of ripe peach, lime and brown spices. Densely packed and lively; distinctly powerful for Bienvenue. Vinous (93-95)The 2020 Chambolle-Musigny Les Cras 1er Cru has an almost flinty bouquet with delicate wilted rose petal scents that gradually unfold in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied, the 65% whole bunch barely detectable. Very cohesive, fine tannins, very saline towards the finish with shucked oyster shell, one of this limestone-rich vineyard’s signature notes. Sculpted with a fine chisel on the finish. Excellent. |

Jeb Dunnuck (99)The white of the vintage is the 2016 Haut Brion Blanc, a Sauvignon-dominated blend that includes just under 30% Sémillon. Amazingly deep and rich, yet vibrant at the same time, it offers an exotic, liquid rock-like minerality as well as notes of citrus zest, crushed limes, and white flowers. It’s unquestionably one of the most concentrated, powerful wines out there, yet it still just glides across the palate with flawless integration of its fruit and acidity. It needs short-term cellaring and will keep for 20-30 years if you’re so inclined. |

Vinous (90-92)The 2019 Morey-Saint-Denis "Trilogie" comes from three lieux-dits: Chenevery (50%), Clos Salon (15%) and Les Porroux (35%). It has a crisp, quite airy, open bouquet with vibrant black cherry and briary aromas, fine definition with a touch of graphite in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit. The one-third whole bunches is nicely integrated and lending black pepper notes on the lively finish. Recommended. |
