It has an utterly sublime bouquet of blackberry, briar, crushed limestone, a dash of cracked black pepper and a little oregano. This is extremely complex and displays exquisite focus, to the extent that you could just sit and nose it all day. The palate is beautifully balanced, the spicy red fruit framed by filigreed tannin that belies its backbone. There is a gentle crescendo from start to finish, though being La Tâche it retains complete control. The precision and detail in the final third are deeply impressive. Less fruit-forward than the 2015, and lightly spiced, with an insistent grip. It is vinified in small concrete vats and aged in French oak barrels.

The palate is textured, with dried-earth minerality, lifted by arching acidity, which makes this hugely approachable and perhaps offers a glimpse into the character of Trotanoy 2016 itself in years to come. The nose beings with simple licorice notes before slowly unfurling to deliver growing scents of creme de cassis, plum preserves, dark chocolate, and lilacs, followed by suggestions of crushed rocks, tar, black truffles and cardamom. The full-bodied palate is a tightly coiled spring, taut with black fruit preserves and earthy layers and framed by very firm, grainy tannins, delivering a burst of freshness to carry the long, long, long finish. This will need a good 7-10 more years to fully blossom, and it will be well worth the wait. |

Lot #2, from a 2001 planting at a extreme density of 30,000 vines per hectare, which Lamy harvested first in 2016: Pale lemon-yellow. Metallic minerality and a note of minty freshness on the nose. Boasts superb sappy energy and intensity to its flavors of lemon zest, lime and stone, with captivating sweetness adding to its appeal. I would not call this an easy style but its vibrant, very long finish leaves the taste buds quivering. A great Saint-Aubin wine in the making. |
