Vinous (95)

Supremely elegant and light on its feet, La Spinetta's 2016 Barbaresco Vigneto Gallina is simply fabulous. Freshly cut flowers, mint, spice and a touch of French oak add nuance to a core of sweet red/purplish berry fruit. Wonderfully supple and racy, the Gallina captures every bit of the potential 2016 had to offer. This is such a gorgeous wine. I can't remember tasting a Gallina here with this much diversity.

(as with the Bâtard, the yield was not much more than ten hectoliters per hectare): Very pure aromas of lemon, lime, white flowers and liquid stone. Quite rich and concentrated but tight and youthfully clenched. There was very little fruit in 2016 from the upper, more minerally part of the vineyard, noted Brice de la Morandière, which may have resulted in a heavier wine than normal. But this wine boasts a strong spine, even if it's still an infant today.

(fairly late malo here): Aromas of pear, green apple, menthol, mint leaf and rosemary, complicated by warm southern herbs. Very rich, even opulent wine with noteworthy sucrosité and lowish acidity. This very tactile, smooth wine boasts excellent breadth without any rough edges. Finishes quite dry and rich, with palate-staining length and an emerging impression of lemon drop acidity.

A blend of 94% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Cabernet Franc, 2% Merlot, and 1% Petit Verdot, the 2016 Chateau Margaux is deep garnet-purple in color. It is a real struggle to shake loose the aromas, this is so shut down at the moment. Eventually, notes of crème de cassis, blackberry pie, and blueberry compote begin to emerge, followed by licorice, dark chocolate, cumin seed, truffles, and iron ore suggestions. Full-bodied and full-on rich and seductive, the palate is absolutely crammed with bright, crunchy black fruit layers, framed by astonishingly ripe, finely grained tannins and amazing tension, finishing with a firework display of minerals, flowers, and exotic spices. Sell your car and get a few cases of this - you won't regret it!

The 2016 Echézeaux Grand Cru was not touched by the frost this season. It has a very composed and well-defined bouquet with vibrant red and black fruit. I like the focus and cohesion here. The palate is medium-bodied with supple but fine tannin, finely structured and precise with great purity and superb freshness on the finish. This has 10% stems, but you cannot tell at all, and you are left with the impression that this is really a top-notch Echézeaux that is destined to give 15 to 20 years pleasure (if allowed).

Bright, dark red-ruby. Heady aromas of black fruits, tart cherry stomp, licorice and violet. Wonderfully plush and fine-grained but medicinal and backward, with its flavors of black fruits, flowers and spices accented by pungent minerality. Very densely packed but even more imploded than the Cros Parantoux and more difficult to taste today. A wine with outstanding intensity and focus, as well as the medicinal reserve for a long evolution in the cellar. Firm tannins are perfectly buffered by strong material.

Saturated ruby-red. Aromatic and very pure but restrained on the nose, offering high-pitched aromas of dark raspberry, black cherry, flowers, spices and minerals. Impressively concentrated and dense yet light on its feet, with its very intense flavors of dark fruits, spices and flowers enlivened by saline tension. Almost painful in the middle palate in the early going, this wine finishes with firm but suave tannins and outstanding lingering perfume. Méo did not add SO2 in the fermenter because this wine often has reduction issues. With its fruit of steel, this beauty should enjoy a long life in bottle.

A blend of 83% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot, 1% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Petit Verdot, the 2016 Mouton Rothschild has a pH of 3.62 and a very deep purple black color. It is very closed to begin, requiring a lot of swirling to unleash a powerful wall of crème de cassis, juicy black plums, and scents of boysenberries, followed by nuances of star anise, incense, violets, crushed rocks, and camphor, plus emerging iron ore and rose oil hints. The medium to full-bodied palate is densely packed with layer upon layer of black fruit preserves and perfumed floral and exotic spice accents, framed by beautifully ripe, plush tannins and seamless freshness, finishing with an epically long fruit and mineral firework display. Gorgeous!

(from the estate's two parcels in Les Rouges du Bas and Les Quartiers de Nuits, both of them frosted in 2016; just 17 hectoliters per hectare produced): Deep ruby-red. Very ripe aromas of black cherry, dark chocolate, licorice and flowers, plus a note of black pepper. Offers incredible concentration to its flavors of blackberry syrup and savory minerality, conveying an almost liqueur-like ripeness for a dry wine. Painfully intense in the early going but the big tannins are buffered by the wine's impression of extract. This wine will need extended cellaring to absorb its penetrating saline minerality. I can understand why Marie-Christine Mugneret presented this wine last.

Deep ruby in color, here you find truffle, dark chocolate, coffee bean, cigar box, black cherry and dark plums. Full bodied, elegant, velvety, opulent, sweet and fresh, the presence on the palate is silk and velvet in the texture with purity and sweetness to the fruits. The wine is hedonistic as well as intellectual, and a little bit firm. There is serious aging potential. The wine really sticks with you, for over 60 seconds in the finish. Give this at least 15 or more years in the cellar to develop before popping a cork.

(about 50% frost; made from very old, low-yielding vines): Bright, light yellow-green. Pungently mineral scents of lime zest, white flowers, crushed rock, anise, caraway seed and mint. At once vibrant and thick, with flavors of underripe pineapple and grapefruit pith displaying terrific energy and lift. This beauty expanded with air to reveal a silkier texture, outstanding purity and a captivating crushed-chalk dustiness. Incidentally, Pierre-Yves Colin told me that he's currently enjoying white wines from his 2003 through 2006 vintages at home--but nothing younger than that.

(Colin has just a single one-year-old 500-liter barrel of this juice): Ripe but very reticent nose hints at green apple. Tactile, peppery, dry and classic, conveying a dusty impression of extract. Tight, primary flavors of peach and white peach show a savory, sappy quality. Here's a young 2016 that might be compared to a 2010. This still needs further élevage to stretch out, and lose some of its CO2.

Bright, green-tinged yellow. Aromas of lime, ginger and mint call to mind a mini-Chevalier-Montrachet. Juicy, pure and tightly wound, showing none of the exotic character of the Chatenière. This very concentrated, dry, linear wine finishes with terrific slowly unfolding length and precision--a bit austere today but not hard. Rémilly is just over the hill from Chevalier-Montrachet, so it's no coincidence that this is an outperformer for its appellation. Only 50% frost here, noted Pierre-Yves Colin. Lay this one down.

The 2016 Montrachet Grand Cru is stunning, unfurling in the glass with youthfully reticent but already complex aromas of crisp green pear, mandarin, dried white flowers, honeycomb, toasted nuts and iodine. In the mouth, the wine is full-bodied, deep and powerful, with striking amplitude and volume, immense concentration and chewy structuring extract, its satiny attack segueing into a tense, focused mid-palate and finish. This is an austere, old-fashioned rendition of Ramonet's Montrachet that it is shaping up to be one of the three or four greatest white Burgundies of the vintage.

The 2016 Chablis Blanchots Grand Cru has a complex, quite beguiling bouquet with scents of dried honey, acacia, pressed flowers and orange blossom that unfold in the glass and attain quite a high level of intensity. The palate is very well balanced with a fine line of acidity, taut and poised with hints of spice, orange rind and grapefruit towards the pixelated finish. What a great Blanchots from Isabelle Raveneau. Tempting in its youth for sure, but it will reward those with the nous to cellar for five years.

One of the highlights in this tasting, the 2016 Monte Bello has turned out just as beautifully as I hoped it would. Soaring aromatics, bright acids and mid-weight structure give the 2016 a super-classic feel. Clearly, the 2016 is very primary today, with plenty of bright red and purplish berry fruit. More than that, though, the 2016 pulses with energy and simply exceptional balance. Don't miss it!

A perfect wine that's up with the top handful of wines in this incredible vintage, the 2016 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Collection Charles Giraud (60/40 Grenache and Mourvèdre) boasts a sensational nose of currants, cured meats, kirsch, exotic spices, and sandalwood. The 2016 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Aux Malconsorts was showing a little more reduction on the nose compared to the other cuvées. Underneath though, lies intense and quite voluminous red berry fruit, later rose petals, a touch of woodland coming through. The palate is medium-bodied with quite high-toned entry, vivacious blueberry fruit mixed with cassis and orange pith, then closing in quickly on a structure and grippy finish (it finished its malolactic not until September so this would explain this). It will require several years in bottle. It is not quite as audacious as the 2015 Malconsorts, but certainly a prince to that king.

In 2016 it was extremely dry at Vieux Chateau Certan so they had to delay the harvest. They marked the vines on which the berries had dried and didn't harvest them. The blend in 2016 was 85% Merlot, 14% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Cabernet Sauvignon and it has a deep garnet-purple color. It pops with scents of vibrant black plums, juicy blackberries and redcurrant jelly, leading to hints of licorice, wood smoke, crushed rocks, and violets, plus a hint of cumin seed. Full-bodied, rich and seductive, the palate has a firm frame of ripe, rounded tannins and seamless freshness supporting the dense, muscular fruit, finishing long. The fruit is so primary - it's in a time capsule. This was the first vintage bottled using their own bottling line.

It's a very serious Les Clos that could well be the wine of the vintage.

Deep, full-bodied and powerful, yet with an incredible sense of elegance and purity, it just glides across the palate and, despite its awesome intensity, it never seems heavy or over the top. Give it 2-3 years, and it will keep for two decades or more.

The 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Cask 23 is powerful and savory in the glass, with tons of both aromatic nuance and supporting structure that give the wine gravitas as well as a very clear sense of direction. The plum, blackberry jam, grilled herb, lavender and dark spice notes are all very finely drawn in this big but polished Cabernet Sauvignon from Stag's Leap Wine Cellars.

The 2016 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Saint-Georges 1er Cru has an impressive and quite captivating bouquet with open-knit tertiary red berry fruit, hints of leather and sous-bois, just so involving that you cannot extract your nose from the glass. The palate is beautifully balanced with seamless tannin, superb acidity, the new oak present but seamless integrated with a satin-like finish that you might conflate with a wine from Vosne-Romanée. Outstanding. Tasted blind at the 2016 Burgfest tasting.

The aromas of violets, roses and lavender are captivating. Turns to spices and hazelnuts. So complex. This full-bodied wine grows and grows on the palate, yet it remains agile and fresh. Plenty of energy in the palate. More powerful than the perfect 2015. We will see which is better in the end. Great wine. Try in 2022.

From bottle, the 2016 Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos is more immediately expressive than the Preuses, revealing aromas of honeyed lemons, preserved citrus and quince. On the palate, it's fuller-bodied, deep and ample, even rich, with a layered core, succulent acids and almost chewy levels of extract, concluding with a long finish. It's a very serious Les Clos that could well be the wine of the vintage.
