Vinous (90-92)

The 2018 Beaune Clos des Aigrots 1er Cru Blanc has a fragrant bouquet of orange blossom, tangerine and light petrolly aromas that lend an almost Riesling-like allure. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity. The very harmonious finish displays nuttiness and salinity reminiscent of a Meursault. Excellent.

The 2018 Chambolle-Musigny Les Charmes 1er Cru has a divine, precise bouquet with detailed red fruit, crushed minerals and hints of sous-bois, focused and engaging. The palate is medium-bodied with finely chiselled tannins, perfectly judged acidity, tight and linear yet brimming with energy. Persistent on the finish, this is a classy Chambolle that needs another 24 months in bottle. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2018 red tasting.

The 2018 Nuits Saint-Georges Clos des Argillières 1er Cru does not quite deliver the vivacity or delineation of Liger-Belair's Clos des Grandes Vignes - a little oaky, but there is sufficient fruit to support it. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly chewy tannins, good weight and acidity. The muscular finish lacks the elegance and refinement that a cooler vintage would bestow. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2018 red tasting.

A full-bodied powerhouse as well as a perfect wine, the 2018 Château Montrose is a final blend of 72% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, and 6% Cabernet Franc that was raised in 60% new French oak. Boasting a deep purple hue as well as awesome levels of crème de cassis and smoky blackberry fruits and notes of tobacco, lead pencil, scorched earth, and chocolate, it's deep, opulent, and incredibly concentrated on the palate, with no shortage of mid-palate depth, tannins, or length. It reminds me a little of a fresher version of the 2003, although there's more Cabernet Sauvignon in 2018 as well as less Merlot. It has that classic Montrose minerality and backward, mineral-laced style, yet I suspect this will be drinkable in just 5-6 years and should evolve into a modern-day legend from this terroir.

I'm not alone in considering this one of the all-time great Moutons - it was awarded World's Greatest Wine is a competition last year that saw numerous rounds of blind tasting. It's worth your while to find out why - this is a powerhouse of beautiful fruits - layer upon concentrated layer of blackberry, cassis, liquorice, baked earth, cigar box, black truffle and the signature smoked and grilled spices of Mouton. The tannins are velvety but determined, holding on to their fruit with no intention of letting go for another few decades. 100% new oak. There is the tiniest touch of Petit Verdot in the blend but under 1% so it’s not in the official figures. 62% of production went into the grand vin. 3.78pH. 88IPT. The artist for this vintage is Xu Bing.

The 2018 Petrus has a deep garnet purple color. It skips out of the glass with lifted scents of Morello cherries, redcurrant jelly, and fresh mulberries, plus suggestions of black olives, truffles, and underbrush. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is very firm and taut with ripe, grainy tannins and muscular fruit, finishing long and earthy. Typically for this vineyard, it will require patience!

The 2018 Meursault Les Perrières 1er Cru, matured in around one-third new oak, underwent a slightly later malolactic than other cuvées, not finishing until early summer, though Anne Morey cannot explain why. It has an exquisite bouquet that translates the mineralité of this vineyard with style and panache. Prudent use of new oak allows the terroir to shine through from the glass. The 2018 Pontet-Canet is a blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot. It was aged in 55% oak barriques and 45% amphorae. Deep garnet-purple colored, it explodes from the glass with an atomic perfume of raspberry pie, blackcurrant pastilles, rose oil and Chinese five spice, giving way to suggestions of cinnamon stick, dusty soil, pencil lead and underbrush. The rich, seductive, full-bodied palate is a hedonist's dream, delivering layer-upon-layer of black and red berry preserves with loads of fragrant accents, a beautifully firm yet plush texture and tons of freshness, finishing long with a whole firework display of exotic spices. This is pretty much out-of-the-gate delicious, but it has the backbone to evolve over three decades or more.

(Outstanding) A slightly fresher nose also reflects elusive suggestions of the exotic on the aromas that also display hints of citrus confit, white flower and whiffs of dried herbs. There is better vibrancy and detail as well as more obvious minerality on the medium-bodied flavors that are better-balanced, more persistent and markedly more complex. This is lovely and a wine that should reward 8 to 10 years of cellaring yet one that should be approachable after only 4 to 5 years.

Even with air the nose remains exceptionally restrained and even aggressive swirling barely reveals the highly spiced aromas of white peach, pear, just sliced fennel, jasmine tea and, like the Chevalier, a touch of mintiness along with the barest nuance of wood. There is fine though not massive density to the refined yet powerful and muscular larger-scaled flavors that possess almost painful intensity on the bone-dry, clean and taut finish that is seriously long because just as it seems to be dying away, it suddenly returns. In the category of a nit, there is noticeable warmth even if it's not really enough to impair the overall sense of balance. As one would expect from one of the most storied wines in all of Burgundy, this sports serious upside development potential which I would peg at between 12 and 15 years for the 2018 version of the Ramonet Montrachet.

Once again, the nose is markedly cool and reserved with its prominently floral and citrus-suffused aromas of wet stone, shellfish and pungent iodine wisps. The sleek, sophisticated and focused larger-scaled flavors brim with minerality and a reasonable amount of dry extract while the driving, chiseled and linear finish is strikingly long. Interestingly, this doesn't possess the same density as either the Blanchot or the Valmur but it is already more complex and so compact that it's clear this is going to require extended cellaring to arrive at its apogee.

This is a classic vintage of an Italian icon now celebrating its 50th vintage. The Tenuta San Guido 2018 Bolgheri Sassicaia lays out a familiar blueprint that borrows from the proven track record of this landmark estate that extends into the hills just beyond the Tyrrhenian shores of Tuscany. This vintage is crystalline and pure in its delivery, and if you are familiar with previous editions, it is impossible to mistake this wine for anything but Sassicaia. The growing season started off cool and wet but turned to warm and dry conditions comfortably before the harvest. Cabernet Sauvignon with Cabernet Franc in a supporting role deliver a graceful mid-weight texture that holds back style-wise in terms of phenolic density. The wine's careful balance is achieved thanks to the nuanced character of the fruit, the present acidity, the well-managed structure and the contained alcohol. The palate is lifted and bright, the finish is polished and long, and the wine skips over any heaviness on the mid-palate. The bouquet is especially intriguing with a very lively plummy fruit element that is enhanced by baker's chocolate, pepper spice, iron ore, caramel and pie crust. There is also a green character that adds positively to the bouquet with aniseed, tea leaf, soya, menthol rub and black olive. The fruit maturity is spot-on with no elements that feel over or underripe. Overall, the 2018 Sassicaia weighs in with a svelte frame and long persistence. Moreover, it is distinguished by the archetypal elegance and pedigree of the classic vintages of the past. This new release gives you much pleasure to await.

Burghound (93)

(Outstanding) A slightly fresher nose also reflects elusive suggestions of the exotic on the aromas that also display hints of citrus confit, white flower and whiffs of dried herbs. There is better vibrancy and detail as well as more obvious minerality on the medium-bodied flavors that are better-balanced, more persistent and markedly more complex. This is lovely and a wine that should reward 8 to 10 years of cellaring yet one that should be approachable after only 4 to 5 years.

Burghound (97)

Vinous (92-94)

A wine of textural depth and resonance, the 2018 Chablis Monts-Mains 1er Cru shows terrific power and richness in its broad, sweeping feel. Even with all of its density and overtness, the 2018 retains terrific freshness to balance things out.

Burghound (95)

This is perhaps the most elegant and floral-infused wine in the range with its array of various white flower scents, especially acacia that are nuanced by wisps of ocean breeze, iodine and algae. The restrained and well-detailed flavors possess a sophisticated and refined mouthfeel while the stony and chiseled finish exhibiting excellent persistence on the bone-dry finish. This is class in a glass and a stunning rendition of the appellation though note well that at least moderate patience is strongly advised.

Burghound (96)

Once again, the nose is markedly cool and reserved with its prominently floral and citrus-suffused aromas of wet stone, shellfish and pungent iodine wisps. The sleek, sophisticated and focused larger-scaled flavors brim with minerality and a reasonable amount of dry extract while the driving, chiseled and linear finish is strikingly long. Interestingly, this doesn't possess the same density as either the Blanchot or the Valmur but it is already more complex and so compact that it's clear this is going to require extended cellaring to arrive at its apogee.

Wine Advocate (97+)
