Wine Advocate (93)

Aromas of crisp Anjou pear, lime zest, orange oil, fresh hazelnuts and white flowers introduce the 2019 Meursault Village, a medium to full-bodied, layered and incisive wine that's chalky and concentrated, with racy acids and an abundance of structuring dry extract. When I was served this wine blind a month after tasting it at the domaine, I mistook it for its 2017 counterpart, which should give some indication of the pitch-perfect balance Raphaël Coche succeeded in attaining in the more extreme 2019 vintage.

The 2019 Meursault Les Rougeots reveals notes of crisp Anjou pear, white flowers, orange oil, fresh bread, almond paste and vanilla pod. Medium to full-bodied, layered and concentrated, it's elegantly muscular, with terrific concentration, lively acids and chalky grip, concluding with a long, resonant finish. This is beautifully balanced and built to age.

Burghound (93-95)

(from a 2.67 ha parcel situated entirely in terres rouges soil in the far southern portion of the vineyard). A riper and more restrained nose requires some swirling to reveal its aromas of plum liqueur, blue berry, earth and a more restricted range of spice elements. The bigger and richer flavors possess an opulent richness and a velvety texture that coats the palate and enrobes the firmer tannic spine shaping the powerful, tautly muscular and strikingly persistent finale. This offers a completely different expression compared to the Amoureuses but one that is equally interesting. This too possesses superb development potential though patience definitely advised. The 2019 La Romanée Grand Cru has a predictably exquisite bouquet of beguiling delineation, featuring macerated red cherries, crushed violet, incense and a touch of iodine. The palate is medium-bodied with sensual, quite lush tannins that frame the pure black and blue fruit. There is gentle build in the mouth, and it fans out gloriously toward the cashmere finish. Crystalline.

(5-Star Wine) An attractive faint green tint to the colour. The nose shows no signs of heat or heaviness. This is magical on the palate, absolutely fills the mouth, ripe lemons on top of rich pear fruit, but nothing peachy or over-ripe. A brilliant example of Charmes, as the vineyard and the vintage are completely in harmony. Drink from 2026-2035.

The 2019 Volnay Clos des Chênes 1er Cru comprises four barrels, of which one is new. It has a charming, well-defined and very pure bouquet of raspberry and wild strawberry fruit laced with crushed stone. The palate is silky-smooth right from the start, very cohesive and displaying a fine bead of acidity; it actually reminds me of Michel Lafarge in style. This will be utterly seductive.

Vinous (92-94)

The 2019 Volnay Les Santenots-du-Milieu 1er Cru, matured in a little more new oak than the Clos des Chênes (around one-third, according to Lafon), offers a quintessential Santenots nose of almost brazen blueberry and cassis aromas mixed with raspberry and violets. The palate is rounded on the entry and exerts a gentle grip. Opulent but controlled, though this year I find more nuance and sensuality on the Champans, which would be my pick of Lafon’s reds.

Vinous (94)

The 2019 Corton Grand Cru is a big, rich wine that announces the vintage in style. Black cherry, plum and lavender are some of the many notes that are dialed up in the 2019. This is an especially somber, almost brooding Corton with a good deal of lift from the whole clusters that lends verve and energy. Hints of incense, dried herbs and gravel build into the heady finish. Stem influence is a bit more pronounced here than it is in the other wines, but the overall impression is of a Burgundy that marries elegance with power. Yields were just 15 hectoliters per hectare.

The 2019 Echézeaux Grand Cru was picked on September 22–23 at 23hl/ha. It has an absolutely divine bouquet of pure black cherry and blueberry scents plus hints of pressed violet and crushed limestone, all displaying wonderful focus. The palate is very spicy with a liberal dose of black pepper on the entry. I cannot remember an Echézeaux from the domaine blessed with so much exuberance and charm at this early stage in its evolution, leaving the mouth tingling with glee after it has departed. Not to be underestimated, this should drink for 20–30 years.

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (97)

The colour is a little denser, a little richer than the Echezeaux. The bouquet is more backward, yet more complex. It is hard to put specific fruits to this. Increasing weight on the nose, all red berry, no black notes. The wealth of fruit attacks quickly and then stays, with fresh roses jostling among the lush but still quite precise fruit flavours. The structure maintains its role and helps to keep this powerful wine fresh. The volume now swells magically on the second half of the palate, with darker notes. Tasted: November 2021.

The 2019 La Tâche Grand Cru is sublime. Mingling aromas of wild berries and bergamot with notions of rose petals, exotic spices, violets, clove and cinnamon, it's full-bodied, deep and concentrated, with a multidimensional palate of breathtaking plenitude. Elegantly muscular, this is a vibrant, pristinely balanced wine that concludes with a long, resonant finish. More structured and broader shouldered than the ethereal Romanée-Conti itself, this will demand and richly reward bottle age.

The 2019 Richebourg Grand Cru, the first cuvées to be picked on September 15–16 at 21h/ha, has a very intense marine-influenced bouquet, Japanese nori and shucked oyster shells permeating the black fruit. This is very distinctive from other Richebourgs that I have tasted. The palate displays exquisite balance and astonishing focus. One of the most saline Richebourg wines that I have tasted from the domaine out of barrel, this exerts a gentle grip in the mouth and culminates in a sapid finish that rivets your feet to the ground. Profound.

Decanter (100)

Picked at the same time as La Tâche on 17 September, Romanée-Conti is following a different arc of evolution. Tasted out of barrel, the wine was perfection itself. I remember being struck by the explosive nature of the aromas and their range from high-toned red fruit to darker black fruit and the shading delivered by notes of while herb, mineral, and earth. None of that has disappeared, but the ensemble is less expressively aromatic than it was from barrel. The wine seems to be going quiet, although on the palate the enormous extract, density and well-managed tannins are all still in evidence. It is certain it will be worth the wait.

The 2019 Romanée St. Vivant Grand Cru picks up where the Grands Echézeaux leaves off. What a wine! Complete and beautifully resonant, the Romanée St. Vivant offers up copious dark fruit intermingled with dried herbs, lavender, graphite and coffee. It’s a rich, dramatic Romanée St. Vivant that will reward decades of cellaring. In most years, Romanée St. Vivant is a wine of sensuality, but in 2019 it is quite brooding and potent in bearing. I adore the discrete crescendo in this Grand Cru and the unimposing but long aftertaste. "It’s been growing in stature over the last 10 to 15 years," remarked Alex Seysses. A touch more austere than the magical Veroilles, Barthod's 2019 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Cras nonetheless gives it stiff competition. Wine Advocate (94-96+)

A touch more austere than the magical Veroilles, Barthod's 2019 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Cras nonetheless gives it stiff competition. Mingling notes of cherries and raspberries with hints of warm spices, orange rind, wild plums and peony, it's medium to full-bodied, deep and complete, with huge texture and concentration. Beautifully integrated but tightly wound and youthfully chalky, it will—as usual—demand a little patience.
