The 2019 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Saint-Georges 1er Cru has a very well-defined, complex bouquet that puts the preceding Les Vaucrains in its place. Here there is clearly greater focus and terroir expression, subtle sous-bois scents permeating the black and red fruit. The harmonious palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, seamlessly integrated new oak and a silky-smooth finish exerting judicious grip. Very classy.

Burghound (91-94)

(from a 1.08 ha mix of younger and older vines that average about 50+ years of age). Discreet wood influence surrounds the notably ripe and fresh aromas of cassis, plum liqueur, earth and evident sauvage wisps. There is excellent richness and volume to the suave, round and seductive mid-palate of the broad-shouldered flavors that contrast markedly with the very firmly structured, youthfully austere and impressively persistent finish. As is usually the case, this is very compact and backward and a wine that will require extended aging to reach its peak. (91-94)/2036+

The 2019 Chambolle-Musigny Les Baudes 1er Cru has a lovely menthol-tinged bouquet, redcurrant and cranberry, light tertiary notes developing with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red berry fruit, white pepper and cumin. Lovely balance here, the new oak is well integrated. Just a pity, only two barrels were produced.

Situated in Mazoyères, the 2019 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru is well defined on the nose with precise black fruit laced with blueberry and light violet aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit laced with graphite, quite strict and linear with good grip on the finish. One of the more structured Charmes-Chambertins that you will find in this vintage. Just one barrel made in 2019.

The 2019 Morey-Saint-Denis "Trilogie" comes from three lieux-dits: Chenevery (50%), Clos Salon (15%) and Les Porroux (35%). It has a crisp, quite airy, open bouquet with vibrant black cherry and briary aromas, fine definition with a touch of graphite in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit. The one-third whole bunches is nicely integrated and lending black pepper notes on the lively finish. Recommended.

If you’ve ever seen a postcard of a Scottish fishing village, chances are it was Tobermory. The iconic village on the cost of the fabled Isle of Mull, is known for its colourful waterfront and picturesque fleet of fishing and pleasure craft in its ancient harbour.

The village and the isle is picturesque for sure and has a rich history of sunken Spanish treasure, Viking raiders and some of the earliest Gaelic-speaking arrivals to Scotland. It is only fitting that one of the most beloved distilleries in the country is located here; the eponymous Tobermory Distillery.

Best known for their gentle Island spirit, closers in style to Scapa and lighter Northern Islay malts, Tobermory is a gloriously pleasurable whisky, highly sought after by collectors and with a dedicated core of devotees. On the cask market, it proves as elusive as the galleon's treasure in Tobermory Bay.

The 2019 Chevalier-Montrachet Clos de Chevaliers Grand Cru has a very strict and linear nose, crushed stone and dewy Granny Smith apples, touches of flint coming through with aeration. The palate is very well balanced with a silver bead of acidity, hints of blackcurrant leaf with a gentle, lilting finish. One of the prettiest Clos de Chevaliers that I have tasted from Chartron. Delightful.

The 2019 Montrachet Grand Cru (Marquis de Laguiche) is very intense on the nose, featuring subtle licorice scents tucked behind the citrus fruit; this seems to expand with aeration. The palate is beautifully balanced with a playful entry of apricot and quince. It builds beautifully in the mouth, revealing hints of crème brûlée and almond shavings toward the well-defined finish. Hints of chai tea and grilled hazelnut swirl around on the aftertaste. This is a long-term Montrachet.

Decanter (98)

This definitely represents a new beginning for the Clos des Lambrays, beginning with a dizzying array of aromas that range from high-toned red fruits to ripe, plummy black fruit, all touched with spice, and a suggestion of wild herbs and fresh flowers. After blending there was an average of 80% whole cluster fermentation. The texture on the palate is concentrated but not heavy, and there is a charming, silky aspect to it so, despite the tannin and density, the overall impression is one of finesse and elegance.

The 2019 Bienvenue-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru is cut from a similar cloth to the Les Pucelles on the nose: reserved, mineral-driven with hints of orange blossom emerging with time, later more Granny Smith apples. The palate is strict and precise, demonstrating impressive weight, especially towards the back end. Maybe not quite as complex as the best of Leflaive’s Premier Cru, though it is extremely pesistent with a long ginger-tinged aftertaste. Closure: Diam 30

The 2019 Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru needed a little encouragement from the glass. Eventually it reveals captivating scents of honeysuckle, petrichor and pressed yellow flowers, an underlying spiciness that comes through with aeration. The palate has a beguiling symmetry from the start: a killer line of acidity counterbalancing the intensity of this Chevalier, gentle grip towards the spicy and "flowing" finish. Everything you could really want in a Chevalier-Montrachet Closure: Diam 30

Jeb Dunnuck (97-99+)

The vivid purple, almost blue-hued 2019 Château Léoville Barton is a Cabernet Sauvignon-dominated wine that includes 16% Merlot. It will spend 18 months in a mix of new and used barrels. Classic Barton notes of cassis, scorched earth, burning embers, new leather, and violets emerge from the glass, and this beauty is full-bodied, massively concentrated, and structured on the palate, yet it has a beautiful elegance as well as a plushness in its texture. Nevertheless, it's not for those seeking instant gratification and is going to need 10-15 years of bottle age to hit maturity. It reminds me of the 1990 and is a great, great wine in the making. If you love Léoville Barton, don't miss this wine!

With a deliberate focus on elegance and finesse rather than power, this wine is a true testament to Domaine Les Horees' endeavours to produce wines that eloquently express their terroir, enhancing the excellent reputation of Burgundy wines worldwide.

The 2019 Clos de La Roche Grand Cru contains 80% whole bunches this year and underwent just a couple of punch-downs. There is a tiny amount of reduction on the nose as I taste it, gradually opening to reveal raspberry, blackcurrant and violet aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with saturated tannins matched with a very fine bead of acidity. This is a very cohesive and refined Grand Cru with a lilting, carefree finish that belies its inherent complexity and persistent. Easy to under-estimate this, I am sure it will age with style.

As an esteemed wine connoisseur, I am delighted to introduce the Louis Michel Chablis 1er Cru Butteaux Vv 2019. A quintessentially prestigious yet artisanal name in the world of Chablis, Louis Michel & Fils flawlessly marries traditional winemaking methods with modern techniques. This specific vintage was cultivated in the prestigious vineyards of Butteaux, renowned for their Kimmeridgian limestone soil. The wine then spent 12 months on fine lees in stainless-steel tanks, respecting the tradition of non-oak Chablis.

This is quite a virile, powerful Chaumes this year, and it will reward bottle age.
