Vinous (92)

Issuing solely from a parcel planted in 1964, this leads with Sauvignon-like pungency of mint and pennyroyal, allied to an anticipation of the apple and lime that brightly inform a silken-textured palate. The superbly sustained finish cools and refreshes in its amalgam of juicy, resinous green-herb- and chalk-infused fresh fruit.

There are so many captivating wines in this tasting, but the 2015 Clos de la Roche seems to just have a little something extra. Ethereal, delicate and nuanced, especially in this context of much richer wines, the Clos de la Roche makes its case more with persistence and nuance rather than pure power. The bright red stone fruit, mineral and floral notes are all sketched with crystalline precision in a hauntingly beautiful Burgundy that hits all the right notes. I can only hope I will have a chance to taste the 2015 when it has had a few years (or more) in bottle.

The 2015 Pommard Les Vignots is outrageously beautiful, not to mention a remarkable wine with which to kick off the tasting. Bold and racy, the 2015 exudes a level of depth and textural richness that is frankly hard to imagine at this level. The Vignots is surprisingly expressive, open and giving today.

The 2015 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Beaux Monts from Domaine Leroy is predictably superb, soaring from the glass with a deep bouquet of black fruits, hoisin, smoked duck and rich spice. On the palate, the wine is extraordinarily concentrated, full-bodied and ample, with grand cru depth and dimension, a fine-grained chassis of tannin and a long, saline finish. Compared to the lavish—even decadent—Aux Brûlées, Les Beaux Monts is more reserved, its stony structure asserting itself more prominently, its mid-palate more taut and less expansive: it will need more time in the cellar.

(vinified with 80% whole clusters): Bright, full red. More complex and perfumed than the Charmes, with its raspberry and blueberry aromas lifted by brown spices (Lignier noted that the Charmes was more complex than this wine before the racking but is mute today). Quite tight and savory in the mouth, showing little in the way of early sweetness. Finishes firmly tannic and spicy. This premier cru will need patience.

Pale, bright yellow. Restrained aromas of iodine, crushed rock and chestnut. Densely packed but slightly spiky and uncompromisingly dry, offering a bracing combination of lemon and pineapple fruit, firm minerality and lively acidity. Very tightly chiseled in the middle palate but opens out somewhat on the rocky back end, finishing with echoing flavors of lemon and saline minerality. (Don't Miss!) Here too there is enough reduction present to push the underlying fruit to the background. Otherwise there is breathtakingly good concentration to the broad-shouldered, succulent and lavishly rich flavors that also possess an almost haunting inner mouth perfume of spice and floral elements. There is superb power and buckets of dry extract and despite the imposing size and weight this remains refined and immaculately well-balanced on the massively long finale. I was knocked out by the potential this demonstrated but note well that it is a wine to buy and forget as this is going to need 20 to 30 years to reach its full apogee.

The 2015 Bolgheri Superiore Ornellaia is a dark, exuberant and opulent wine that is teeming with flavor, ripeness and extract. That said, there is also a note of impurity that I only really locked in on when I went back to taste the wine at different time intervals later in the day and the next. To be clear, it was there upon first examination, but then it blew off. And then it came back. That game of hide and seek proved distracting and puzzling. I wondered if it was cork or barrel, although it did not behave like any of those things, and my doubt is recorded by the question mark next to my score. Cabernet Sauvignon flavors of dried blackberry, toasted espresso and cured tobacco play leading roles.

Upon opening (the bottle was opened in front of me) the nose explodes with an atomic mushroom cloud of molten licorice, black cherry preserves, ripe juicy black plums, and candied violets, followed by hints of Sichuan pepper, Indian spices, crushed rocks, and iron ore. Full-bodied, rich, concentrated and fantastically opulent, the palate delivers super-ripe, velvety tannins and amazing tension to the multi-layered black fruits and exotic spices, finishing with incredible length. Earthy aromas of bark, sand, truffles, graphite, rust, terracotta and sandalwood rise up from the deep with Burgundian poise; fruitier orange zest and preserved lemons glimmer in their wake, while riper incense and tar lurk in this dense forest of aromas. Physics itself gives way as the line between reduction and oxidation is blurred. There’s such richness to the center palate, but the fruit there is vivacious and elegant, swaddled in robust but generous tannins that breach the outermost reaches of the mouth. The finish is hauntingly long, the after effects of the acidity unworldly. This is certainly in a quiet, reserved stage of evolution, and will need time to fully mature in bottle. Drink in 2025.

The 2015 Screaming Eagle is another monumental wine from this address, and it's one of those cases where if you afford it, you should buy it. A blend of 79% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Merlot and the rest Cabernet Franc, this magical elixir boasts a deep purple color as well as a blockbuster bouquet of blueberries, creme de cassis, violets, incense, and cedarwood. Reminding me of the 2015 Château Margaux with its off the charts class and purity, it’s full-bodied, thrillingly textured, and has a finish that just won't quit. Pale, bright yellow. Very closed but pure aromas of lemon zest and oil and wet stone. Wonderfully tactile, intense and alive, offering sharply chiseled flavors of citrus fruits, crushed rock and salty minerality and terrific lemony lift. This very deep but relatively austere 2015 calls for a good four or five years of aging but should ultimately be one of the elite premier crus of its vintage. (Dauvissat also opened a bottle of the 2009 Chablis La Forest, which combined wound-up aromas of lemon, crushed and minerals with some sexy biscuit and truffle suggestions of evolution. On the palate, the wine is still incredibly young, boasting terrific lemony energy and cut and showing just the first hints of empyreumatic and oyster shell character. This wine is neither high in alcohol nor in acidity yet it's classic and powerful and should broaden out dramatically in bottle over the next ten years.)

Approachable now but will reward more in five to six years. A classic Sassicaia.

Jeb Dunnuck (100)

The 2015 Screaming Eagle is another monumental wine from this address, and it's one of those cases where if you afford it, you should buy it. A blend of 79% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Merlot and the rest Cabernet Franc, this magical elixir boasts a deep purple color as well as a blockbuster bouquet of blueberries, creme de cassis, violets, incense, and cedarwood. Reminding me of the 2015 Château Margaux with its off the charts class and purity, it’s full-bodied, thrillingly textured, and has a finish that just won't quit. This legendary wine is going to keep for 30-40 years.

James Suckling (98)

This is very tight grained and beautifully balanced with violets, crushed stones and a brambleberry character. Extremely aromatic and perfumed. Medium to full body with a compressed mouthfeel of wonderfully fine and fresh tannins. A fantastic merlot-based red for the vintage. Structured yet so balanced. Beautiful now but better in 2021.

Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2015 Asterisk comes charging out of the gate with exuberant black and red cherries, warm cassis and raspberry pie scents plus hints of cigar box, Indian spices, rose hip tea and charcuterie with a faint waft of dusty soil. Full-bodied and firmly textured, with bags of red and black fruits, the palate is laced with loads of spicy accents, and it finishes long and perfumed.

Vinous (91)

The 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon Lyndenhurst is pliant, supple and inviting. Dark cherry jam, plum, chocolate, spice and new leather are pushed forward in this racy, succulent Cabernet Sauvignon. A wine with no hard edges and plenty of allure, the 2015 will drink well with minimal cellaring. In the Lyndenhurst, readers will find an affordable Cabernet that showcases the best 2015 has to offer, in its peer group, naturally.

Vinous (96)

Deep lurid ruby. Heady, smoke- and spice-accented boysenberry, cherry liqueur and violet aromas show excellent clarity and pick up a hint of olive with aeration. Sweet and broad on the palate, offering deeply concentrated yet energetic dark berry preserve, cola and floral pastille flavors, plus a suggestion of spicecake. The extremely long, velvety finish features an echo of juicy, sweet blue fruit and harmonious tannins that come in late.

Vinous (93+)
