  • Robert Groffier Bourgogne Passetoutgrains 2018 (12x75cl)

    Vinous (87)

Racked three or four weeks prior to my visit, the 2018 Bourgogne Passetoutgrains contains 10% Gamay. It has a crisp red cherry and wild strawberry bouquet with veins of blue fruit. The palate is well balanced with succulent tannins and a little more body than the 2017, as you would expect, as well as more rondeur on the finish.

A beacon of consistency, Sirugue has been cultivating exquisite wines since 1947, and the 2018 vintage is no exception. • Stephane Magnien Clos Saint-Denis Grand Cru 2018 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (91)

The 2018 Clos Saint-Denis Grand Cru has quite an intense bouquet with red berry fruit, touches of blackcurrant, pain d'épice and sous-bois. This seems to grow and deepen in the glass, developing some unnecessary headiness and then, as if skulking from out of a darkened corner, noticeable and sadly compromising Brettanomyces. The palate is medium-bodied with quite thick and dense tannins. Backward and rather surly, this is a serious Clos Saint-Denis, more dark than light, with some dryness and austerity on the finish. Like reading Dostoevsky when you just want a simple page-turner. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2018 red tasting.

    Vinous (89-91)

The 2018 Vosne-Romanée Village, raised in around 25% new oak, has a very intense bouquet of black cherries and light iodine aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy black fruit tinged with graphite, leading to a precise finish that does not outstay its welcome. Very fine, but it will require three or four years in bottle.

  • Taupenot Merme Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Pruliers 2018 (6x75cl)

    Burghound (92)

There is a background whiff of volatile acidity that adds a bit of lift to the notably ripe aromas of black cherry, cassis, earth and the sauvage. The rich, full-bodied, concentrated and muscular flavors evidence focused power on the balanced, long, rustic and markedly firm finish. This is a wine to buy and forget that you own it as it has excellent development potential.

  • Tawse Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Champeaux 2018 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (93)

The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Champeaux 1er Cru seems to be fulfilling the promise it showed from barrel. Elegant and very pure on the nose, it unfurls with those same brambly red berry fruit scents, tinged with potpourri and wilted rose petal. The palate conveys that sense of transparency, filigreed tannins framing pretty red fruit, and shows decent grip on the finish. I can see this maturing with style.

The 2018 Chablis La Forest 1er Cru is a big step up in all dimensions from the preceding 1ers in the cellar. Powerful, rich and also intensely mineral, the Forest is so vivid and so inviting. All the signatures of this site as interpreted by Vincent Dauvissat are ampled up in large-scaled Chablis endowed with tremendous personality and class. In a word: superb.

  • Vincent Girardin Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Chaumees 2018 (6x75cl)
A phenomenal Chassagne, but we have come to expect nothing else from Girardin in recent years. Fine-grained and mineral-driven with medium weight flavours and solid delineation on the complex and persistent finish. This is quite dry and intense given the heat of the vintage and sufficiently firm that we would suggest allowing it at least a few years of cellar time first.

Pale primrose. Medium to full concentration on the nose. Then an explosion on the palate, with both depth and great clarity. This has a fine touch to it that augurs very well. Really fine boned without in anyway sacrificing intensity. Brilliantly classy. DIAM 10 closure.

    Decanter (96)

One of three producers in Chablis to bottle wine under this label (or a slight variation of its spelling), this comes from what is generally considered the best bit of Bougros, on a slope close to the River Serein. Picked early in 2018, this is fresher and more refined than it can be in warmer vintages, showing beeswax and citrus perfume, refined oak and lingering freshness.

Showing the delicate touch of one of the very best winemakers in Chablis, this is a saline, focused, wonderfully structured Preuses that has plenty of grip and acidity, sappy, bone-dry flavors and remarkable length.
