Ata Rangi Craighall Chardonnay 2011 (12x75cl)

Wine Advocate (92+)

The 2011 Craighall Chardonnay is made from Mendoza clone fruit harvested from 29-year-old vines and aged in about 25% new oak (300-liter barrels) with 40% of the blend undergoing malo-lactic fermentation. It is more closed than the Petrie and has a bit more tropical fruit character accented with a nice toasty and nutty character, scents of apricots, almonds and a touch of ginger. The medium to full-bodied palate has a lovely satin-like texture that is rich and generously endowed with flavor layers before finishing long. It is approachable now and will drink to 2018+.

Line-priced with the Home Block Pinot Noir, this is a slightly more robust style thanks, perhaps, to more clay-rich soils. It's an elegant pinot noir with cherry, spice, anise, floral, violet, cigar box and fine, stemmy tannins. A little closed at this stage but with the potential to develop well with bottle age.

Medium to deep red colour with a good tint of purple. The bouquet is earthy and faintly peppery with a savoury note from wood-ageing, the brown-spice notes adding to the impression of sapidity. Wine Advocate (99)

At the top of the pyramid is the 2005 Syrah Astralis Vineyard. It is sourced from a vineyard planted in 1920 and is one of the Syrah cuvees in which 100% new oak is utilized (along with Brookman, Hickinbotham, and Piggott Range). It delivers an ethereal bouquet of smoky oak, violets, espresso, black pepper, blueberry, and blackberry liqueur. Densely packed and tightly wound, all it needs is time. The wine is totally harmonious, impeccably balanced, and exceptionally long. When it fully unwinds, even my high rating will appear conservative. Its only competition comes from the likes of Guigal, Chapoutier, Chave, Krankl, and Ringland.

81% cabernet sauvignon, 10% merlot, 6% cabernet franc, 3% malbec. Wild-fermented and matured for 18 months in French oak (40% new). The colour is faultless, as is the wine. It has waves of complexity, like one of Margaret River's surf breaks, changing shape as the luxuriant cassis swells on the mid-palate, then finishes with ripe, textured tannins as the wave goes on to crash on the shore. The overall ripeness is perfection.

Cullen Diana Madeline Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot 2018 (6x75cl)

James Suckling (99)

This is a superb edition of this revered, cabernet-based blend with such complete, seamless and elegant feel, yet there’s such depth of flavor, too. Aromas of fresh redcurrants, red and violet flowers, subtle spice, fresh earth, paper bark, fresh-picked thyme and sage, red berries and some cedary notes. The palate is stunning and has a brand of elegance with power that is found in only the greatest wines. Pristine mulberries, red plums, blueberries and red cherries sail through layers of fine tannin, into an unwaveringly long and vibrant finish. An exceptionally concentrated and convincing Diana Madeline release, this is one of their finest. A blend of 79% cabernet sauvignon, 10% merlot, 6% cabernet franc and 5% malbec. The Real Review (98)

Medium to light-straw colour. The bouquet is mineral, savoury, with a high-note of wheat biscuit, the palate very intense and yet understated, with a very savoury dryness in its lingering aftertaste. There are traces of malt, almond meal and lemon in the mouth. The palate has outstanding tension, refinement and length. It`s still reserved and latent, yet to spread its wings, but the intensity is there. It reveals more wonderful complexities the more you taste it and promises to unfold even more with time.

Dandelion Vineyards Lion’s Roar of the Barossa Cabernet Sauvignon 2018 (12x75cl)

James Halliday (95)

While we seldom associate Barossa with that most stiff upper lipped grape, cabernet, there are many good examples. This is among them. Embellished with the varietal tattoo of dried sage, clove and a whiff of leaf, there is something more nourishing, denser and altogether richer from these parts: black olive, bitter chocolate and cherry bonbon. But what I really love are the tannins: moreish, cocoa-laced and fine grained.

Wine Advocate (90)

Produced only in the finest years, the 2006 Omihi Selection Pinot Noir has an introverted, earthy nose that reveals more red cherry, gamey qualities with each pour. The palate is medium-bodied, very well-balanced and refined with an engaging sense of natural being. Touches of boysenberry, cedar and cloves towards the finish, I still felt it just took its foot off the pedal right at the end where I had expected more tautness and focus. Still, a very fine Pinot Noir.

A Tasmanian pinot that has been supremely stylish since first tasted in Jan '18, and is now even better. Deepish, bright, youthful red/purple colour, with a lovely fragrant bouquet of red and dark cherries, strawberry and rose petals. It's complex and foresty too, but shows more primary fruit and perfume than usual for a young Escarpment pinot. Dried flowers, dried herb, savoury underbrush aromas. Revealing a meaty richness along with great concentration, length, purity, and definition, it is a tour de force in winemaking. This amazing Syrah should age effortlessly for two decades.

Clarendon Hills Liandra Syrah 2004 (6x75cl)

Vinous (95)

Dark, glass-staining purple. Expansive, floral bouquet of boysenberry, candied plum, blueberry jam and kirsch, with sexy oak spices and vanilla accentuating the impression of sweetness. A gorgeous expression of bright dark berry flavors, complicated by deft notes of cinnamon, cigar box and star anise. This shows impressive power but also an overall sense of elegance and finesse, especially on the juicy, long finish. An amazing wine, with jaw-dropping concentration and clarity.

Wine Advocate (95)

The 2005 Syrah Onkaparinga delivers scents of toasty oak, crushed rock, pencil lead, game, bacon, and blueberry. Voluptuous but impeccably balanced, it has enough structure to evolve for 8-10 years and should drink well through 2030.

Incredibly complex aromas of baking spices, fresh red fruit and a fine and elegant, floral edge, as well as red cherries, raspberries and red plums. This is phenomenal, so precise and concentrated with such detail and power, delivered with elegance and precision. The palate is super long. The best vintage made at Clonakilla to date! Perfection! Drink now, but better from 2026. Screw cap.

Craneford John Zilm Shiraz 2003 (12x75cl)

Wine Advocate (90-93)

A barrel sample of the 2003 Shiraz (14% alcohol) exhibits notes of black fruits, flowers, and damp earth along with a dense, full-bodied, opulent style. This offering will not be particularly long-lived, but it possesses a pure flavor, good texture, and offers a considerable value. James Halliday (98)

Delicious now, but his will bloom from 2028. Screw cap.

The Western Australian (98)

One of the most powerful and extraordinarily intense of this illustrious line. Power of lemon zest, stone fruit and lime. The palate is a powerhouse with a deep and concentrated middle extending urgently to a very long finish. Complex and layered with structure that will handle extended cellaring. One of the very best.

Dandelion Wonderland Riesling 2019 (6x75cl)

James Halliday (97)

The price of this wine reflects the piercing brilliance of the bouquet and, in particular, the palate. There is some residual sugar, but the acidity totally obscures it. If you buy it, keep some bottles for a minimum of 10 years, allowing the treasure trove of secondary flavours to be liberated.

Daniel Schuster Omihi Hills Pinot Noir Selection 2006 (6x75cl)

Wine Advocate (90)

Produced only in the finest years, the 2006 Omihi Selection Pinot Noir has an introverted, earthy nose that reveals more red cherry, gamey qualities with each pour. The palate is medium-bodied, very well-balanced and refined with an engaging sense of natural being. Touches of boysenberry, cedar and cloves towards the finish, I still felt it just took its foot off the pedal right at the end where I had expected more tautness and focus. Still, a very fine Pinot Noir.

James Halliday (98)

A Tasmanian pinot that has been supremely stylish since first tasted in Jan '18, and is now even better. The richness of the fruit of youth remains in the background; there's a spicy complexity of the mouthfilling flavours. Oak and tannins play their part on the long palate, adding to its longevity.

Escarpment Kupe Pinot Noir 2018 (6x75cl)

The Real Review (96)

Deepish, bright, youthful red/purple colour, with a lovely fragrant bouquet of red and dark cherries, strawberry and rose petals. It's complex and foresty too, but shows more primary fruit and perfume than usual for a young Escarpment pinot. Dried flowers, dried herb, savoury underbrush aromas. Very complex and profound in the mouth, with a very long carry. The tannins are in excellent harmony. An outstanding vintage for this vineyard. (70% whole-bunches)

James Suckling (96)

The final Escarpment Pahi due to vineyard ownership changes, this offers an intense expression on the nose with iodine, tarry elements, bracken, graphite, darker cherries and biscuity spices. The palate unfurls at a smooth and even pace, delivering a ball of supple red cherry-flavoured pinot fruit flesh and silky, sweeping waves of tannin. Always good to go out on a high, this is superb.
