Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (93-95)

Rich, exuberant purple. A cheerful nose, flamboyantly perfumed which is as Charmes should be. I very much like the balance of this, which is all in red fruit, succulent strawberry and raspberry, good acidity, no feeling of excess heat. 14.1% but holds it without difficulty. Tasted: December 2021

The 2015 Corton-Rognet Grand Cru has a fragrant bouquet with blackberry, raspberry preserve, crushed rose petals and just a hint of blood orange, quite sophisticated in style for a Corton-Rognet. The palate is medium-bodied with juicy tannin on the entry. This does not shortchange you on fruit: blackberry, raspberry and a pinch of white pepper, leading to a structured and quite grippy finish that like Taupernot-Merme's other 2015s, manages to retain impressive freshness and elegance. It has an incredibly long aftertaste, over a minute in the mouth and you can still feel this. Highly recommended.

The 2020 Corton-Rognet Grand Cru has a very well-delineated bouquet, very terroir-driven, crushed stone infusing the red fruit a touch of white pepper. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, fresh acidity, taut and crisp, gently building towards quite a complex finish with touches of Early Grey infusing the red fruit, cracked black pepper on the aftertaste. Excellent.

The 2019 Mazoyères-Chambertin Grand Cru has a little more intensity than the Charmes-Chambertin, damp undergrowth, moss, light leafy aromas tincturing the mainly red fruit and developing more and more earthiness with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins and a fine bead of acidity. Taut and fresh with perhaps the most saline finish of all Romain Taupenot’s cuvées this year, it is destined to be a wonderful Mazoyères-Chambertin for sure. Best in show chez Taupenot-Merme.

The 2020 Mazoyères-Chambertin Grand Cru has a vivacious nose - according to Romain Taupenot it was much more closed the previous week. Hints of brown spice infused the red berry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, fine acidity, taut and fresh with veins of orange zest and white pepper on the finish. Great length, but this is quite strict and therefore cellaring is recommended

(80% new oak; 60% vendange entier): Good dark red. Complex nose and palate meld cherry liqueur, animal fur, resiny spices and cedar, lifted by high notes of flowers and citrus peel. Very sweet, silky and ripe, with outstanding sappy verve giving this dense, tactile yet suave wine a noble quality. The very long, mounting finish shows superb fine-grained tannins and building sweetness. A real essence of this grand cru.

The 2016 Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru has a complex and higher toned bouquet compared to the Mazis-Chambertin from Faiveley: compelling aromas of blackberry, raspberry preserve, briary, sea cave and light rose petal aromas. The oak just needs more time to assimilate. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannin, and nicely pitched acidity. A tightly coiled finish feels abrupt for the moment. It just needs several years in bottle. Tasted blind at the 2016 Burgfest tasting.

5 star. Picked 2nd September at 13.5%. 80% new wood. 10% whole bunch. Lovely mid purple, not the deepest. More reserved than Mazoyères but clearly with an amazing depth. Crystalline purity, a whole bevy of fine red fruits underlined by a little torrefaction. It is really backward still but with extraordinary length. Very stylish. And actually then a huge weight of fruit returns even later. Tasted: November 2021

An attractively layered nose offers up notes of violet, plum, smoked meat hints and plenty of warm earth character to the wild dark berry fruit aromas. There is excellent volume to the ripe, intense and powerful large-scaled flavors that exhibit fine intensity on the powerful, balanced and vibrant finish that delivers its usual fine length. This isn't quite a robust as it usually is though it's a big wine all the same and will require an extended cellar siesta. Drink: 2023+

Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2014 tasting, the 2014 Chambertin Grand Cru from J L Trapet showed some stem addition on the nose, although there is sufficient fruit to support and absorb it over time. Indeed, with aeration it gains more harmony and the whole bunch influence seems to recede. The 2015 Charmes Chambertin les Mazoyeres Grand Cru offers up notes of red and black fruit, beetroot, earth and whole cluster spice. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, rich and silky, with an expansive attack, a layered mid-palate and a long, saline finish. This is quite stylized, marked by whole cluster fermentation which seems to give it a high pH feel, but for admirers of this particular aesthetic—a perspective my score reflects—this should offer two decades of rewarding drinking.

100% whole bunch vinification. Most of the vines date back to 1928-29 with a few from 1989. Glowing imperial purple. The nose mirrors the majesty. Starts discreetly then swells on the palate. (from an incredible ~6 ha parcel). A ripe and beautifully layered nose consists of notes of green fruit, citrus, iodine and mineral reduction. The powerful, rich and voluminous big-bodied flavors possess fine mid-palate density that coats the palate with sap before concluding in an austere, long and vaguely rustic finale. This is an imposing Bougros that should age effortlessly over the next decade plus. 2029+

Planted by William's father, these vines are now 55 years old. All the parcels here are on steep slopes. The scintillating nose starts with salted lemons and perky grapefruit peels. The wholesome breadth on the nicely weighty mid-palate vies with tingly acidity and creates a push-pull of ripe fruit and savory minerality from start to finish. 2023-2034

From old vines of around 60-65 years on average. Fresh pale colour with a light green tint. Clear pale colour, slightly smoky, good volume of fruit, the smoke coming out in the mouth as reduction on the seashells. Solid weight here, plus the minerals as well. Pretty good intensity across the piece with density at the back. Drink from 2027-2033. Tasted: June 2022

This is quite stylized, marked by whole cluster fermentation which seems to give it a high pH feel, but for admirers of this particular aesthetic—a perspective my score reflects—this should offer two decades of rewarding drinking.

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (95-98)

100% whole bunch vinification. Most of the vines date back to 1928-29 with a few from 1989. Glowing imperial purple. The nose mirrors the majesty. Starts discreetly then swells on the palate. The wine is entirely harmonious with perfectly integrated light touch of acidity. It is very far from being massive but it is a beauty nonetheless.

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (95)

Pale primrose. Medium to full concentration on the nose. Then an explosion on the palate, with both depth and great clarity. This has a fine touch to it that augurs very well. Really fine boned without in anyway sacrificing intensity. Brilliantly classy. DIAM 10 closure.

Burghound (92-94)

(from an incredible ~6 ha parcel). A ripe and beautifully layered nose consists of notes of green fruit, citrus, iodine and mineral reduction. The powerful, rich and voluminous big-bodied flavors possess fine mid-palate density that coats the palate with sap before concluding in an austere, long and vaguely rustic finale. This is an imposing Bougros that should age effortlessly over the next decade plus. 2029+

Tim Atkin MW (94)

Planted by William's father, these vines are now 55 years old. All the parcels here are on steep slopes. The scintillating nose starts with salted lemons and perky grapefruit peels. The wholesome breadth on the nicely weighty mid-palate vies with tingly acidity and creates a push-pull of ripe fruit and savory minerality from start to finish. 2023-2034

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (91-94)

From old vines of around 60-65 years on average. Fresh pale colour with a light green tint. Clear pale colour, slightly smoky, good volume of fruit, the smoke coming out in the mouth as reduction on the seashells. Solid weight here, plus the minerals as well. Pretty good intensity across the piece with density at the back. Drink from 2027-2033. Tasted: June 2022
