Wine Advocate (97)

Hands down the best Viognier in the country, the 2022 Estate Reserve Viognier is instantly impressive in the glass. It seduces and captivates with a delicate floral nose that overflows with aromas of just-ripe stone fruits and sweet citrus. Medium to full-bodied, the palate shows considerable weight with agile, succulent acidity before displaying an appropriate level of phenolic bitterness to keep things food friendly and fresh. The wine concludes with an elongated, ever-evolving finish that has me returning for more. Just under 1,600 bottles were produced. If you're a Viognier lover, you must seek out this bottling.

The 2021 Chardonnay Estate Reserve is 100% from Greyton matured for 11 months in 500-litre barrels, 40% new. It has a wonderful bouquet with honeydew melon, apricot blossom and light crushed stone scents that percolate through with time. The palate is very well balanced with tropical hints of passion fruit and guava, but the acidity keeps everything on a tight course, very minerally on the finish. Top class.

Vinous (96)

The 2022 Chardonnay Reserve comprises fruit from the Greyton homestead, which is oxidatively handled and fermented for 11 months in 500-liter barrels (25% new). After swirling to address the reduction, it reveals concentrated scents of dried honey, melted candle wax, orange blossom and a touch of grilled walnut. The palate is well-balanced with mineral-infused, slightly tropical fruit: quince and hints of guava that merge into a more mineral-driven taut finish. Quite a multi-faceted Chardonnay, this will age with style and panache. If that Corton-Charlemagne is a bit over-priced…and it probably is…then you know where to come.

50% Chenin Blanc, 42% Verdelho and 8% Grenache Blanc. Roussanne has been dropped from the mix this year while some of the Chenin Blanc is from the Piekenierskloof Skuinskap vineyard – Lourens opting not to release this as a standalone wine as he felt he left picking too late. Pretty and enticing aromatics of pear, peach, citrus plus hints of potpourri and dried herbs and a little flinty reduction while the palate has a dense core of fruit and comes across as entirely seamless. This is establishing itself as one of the best Cape White Blends around.

The 2020 Riesling Graacher Himmelreich Auslese * (Golden Capsule) shows concentrated lemon fruit and crushed blue slate aromas with spicy notes. Just bottled in June, this Auslese is still pretty reductive, yet it shows its true elegance and finesse on the nose. Very elegant, fresh and salty on the palate, this is a savory, almost dry-finishing Auslese from the Graacher Himmelreich that is characterized by remarkably precise and sharp but ripe acidity that is intermingled with the saline taste and causes a salivating finish. Though still too young to full shine, this is a highly promising Auslese. 7.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine from AP 134 22 in July 2022.

Molitor's 2020 Riesling Graacher Himmelreich Kabinett (Green Capsule) is super clear, bright and intense on the utterly slatey, herbal and very delicate, even iodine and, with enough aeration, spectacular nose. Lush and round on the textured palate, this is an intense and juicy but most of all saline Kabinett that lifts everything and leads to an almost dry-tasting yet fruity and juicy finish. There is great precision and piquancy here; think of candied lime rind or maybe a mojito. This is an irresistible Kabinett from the Himmelreich in Graach and is one of the best in its category again. 9% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in July 2022.

The 2018 Riesling Wehlener Klosterberg Auslese *** (Green Capsule) is very clear and openly fruity on the concentrated and aromatic nose, with ripe and spicy stone fruit and lychee as well as spicy aromas with coolish notes of crushed gray slate and flowers. This is another 2018 that reminds me of the world's finest Gewürztraminers due to the flavors, richness, mild acidity and perfect mix of tropical fruit aromas, mineral spiciness and very fine tannins. The wine is sweet rather than medium-sweet, but its crystalline and elegant acidity and aromatic intensity make this a spectacularly great 2018 with greatly deposed power. The wine already tastes dangerously good today, but it will develop at least as gorgeous as the 2003s. This could end up as a giant one day. Tasted at the domain in September 2020.

Revered for its captivating expression of terroir, the Markus Molitor Wehlener Sonnenuhr Auslese 3* White Capsule 2011 is a genuine marvel from Germany's renowned Mosel wine region. Markus Molitor, a revered artisanal vintner who assumes a minimalist approach in the vineyard and winery, meticulously crafts this Riesling from the esteemed Sonnenuhr vineyard, famed for its blue Devon slate soil. Hand-picked at perfect ripeness, the grapes undergo spontaneous fermentation before a veritable slumber in large oak foudres, allowing for a harmonious fusion of fruit, acidity and mineral nuances.

The Markus Molitor Wehlener Sonnenuhr Auslese 3* White Capsule 2011 radiates opulence through its expansive, multi-layered profile. Laden with tropical fruit, honeyed notes and a thread of profound minerality, this Auslese culminates in a prodigious finish. Beverage connoisseurs can anticipate decadent sipping, particularly when paired with dishes of piquant complexities.

Experience the transcendent ethos embodied by the Markus Molitor Wehlener Sonnenuhr Auslese 3* White Capsule 2011, a testament to the grandeur of German Riesling.

The 2021 Riesling Wehlener Sonnenuhr Auslese *** (Golden Capsule) is bright, pure and fresh on the still discreet but very delicate nose that shows perfectly ripe white fruit and deeper, finely weathered, flinty slate aromas. The 2020 Riesling Wehlener Sonnenuhr Spätlese (White Capsule) is clear, pure, intense and refined, spicy and flinty on the nose that shows fully ripe, yellow-golden Riesling fruit combined with flinty/savory slate aromas. Lush and dense yet crystalline and refined on the palate, this is an elegant, very intense and saline, concentrated and substantial Sonnenuhr Spätlese that is, analytically and also sensorially, certainly an Auslese that reveals a concentrated, lemon-fresh, savory and stimulating bitter finish with great substance and class. This 2020 is remarkably complex and tensioned, but it has stimulating, zesty salinity and serious tannin structure. This impressive dry (or dry styled?) Spätlese will need another five to 10 years to open up and unfold its finesse and layers that it will easily keep for 50+ years, if cellared properly. 11.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. From the oldest vines (120+ years), the 2015 Riesling Zeltlinger Sonnenuhr Auslese *** (White Capsule) opens with a very pure yet rich and intense bouquet of luxuriously ripe and intense fruits. Rich and opulent on the palate, still with a yeasty texture but great elegance and endless salinity, this is a powerful and intense Riesling with fine yet vital acidity, a very good mineral grip and a long finish. The 2020 Riesling Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Auslese ** (White Capsule) comes out pure and intense and with amazing finesse and complexity, reminiscent of ripe and warm stone fruit and chamomile aromas along with notes of almond cake and notes of weathered slate. On the palate, this is a spectacularly good two-starred Auslese with a concentrated but pristine texture but also refreshing phenolics on the saline finish. This is a sublime, nuanced and complex Riesling from one of the Mosel's most exciting vineyards where Molitor holds by far the majority. His 2020 Auslese ** is full of energy, tension and salinity, and dare I say, planet wine doesn't have that much to compete at this level of terroir expression and quality for a price of an incredible 40 euros ex-cellar. 12% stated alcohol. Bottled after 12 months, this is a very, very pretty vintage with lower yields but also beautiful fruit purity, precision and a wonderful fruit – acid balance. The aromatics are ripe, succulent and opulent showing honeysuckle, white blossom, lemon cordial, dried herbs and lovely white peach and pineapple pastille notes. Nevertheless, the stand out feature on the palate is undoubtedly the textural sophistication, harmony and chalky minerality combined with super tangy acids bursting with lemon rock candy, white peach and crystalline citrus flavours. Simply an incredible intensity with a harmoniously weightless balance combined with a long, piercing finish. This is definitely a noticeable step up on previous vintages and an incredible achievement for the Mullineuxs! Drink now to 2034+.

The 2018 Riesling Wehlener Sonnenuhr Auslese *** (White Capsule) is bright and intense on the very elegant and refined yet aromatic and super ripe but elegant nose. On the palate, this is a rich and powerful, very intense and concentrated Riesling with a tight structure and a massive yet still not finessed or stimulating finish. The wine has remarkable finesse and salinity, yet it is still somewhat massive and square to really simulate. Never mind, the wine has time. Tasted at the domain in September 2020.

The 2021 Riesling Wehlener Sonnenuhr Auslese *** (Golden Capsule) is bright, pure and fresh on the still discreet but very delicate nose that shows perfectly ripe white fruit and deeper, finely weathered, flinty slate aromas. Lush and round on the palate, this is a highly finessed and stimulating saline and savory Auslese with crystalline, finely grained but nervy acidity and a long and intense yet weightless finish. The wine is finely structured but delivers mouth-filling delicate fruit and is almost irresistible at this early stage. 7.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in May 2023.

Tasted at the domaine from AP 72 21 in July 2022.

However, this wine needs at least 10 to 20 years to age and might deserve an even higher score then.

Rich and intense but highly refined and elegant on the palate, this is a crystalline, very delicate and saline-finishing ZSU with great terroir expression and balance. 12% stated alcohol. Wine Advocate (97)

Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine from AP 43 21 in July 2022.

The 2020 Riesling Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Auslese *** (Golden Capsule) opens with a highly delicate and filigreed bouquet with beautifully clear nuances of apricot and very fine slate on the deep and complex, beautifully refined and precise nose. On the palate, this is a tender, highly finessed and saline Auslese with a concentrated but balanced and seamless texture. Quite sweet still but utterly refined and noble, this delicate, saline and crystalline Auslese doesn't show anything like power or confiture but celebrates its elegance, finesse and definition. A fabulous, pristine Auslese. 7.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine from AP 28 22 in July 2022.

The 2021 Riesling Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Auslese *** (Golden Capsule) offers a very clear and intense, savory, pure and elegant nose of concentrated fruits, including lemon and grapefruit aromas, intertwined with finely flinty notes of crushed slate. Round, lush and generous but also highly delicate and irresistibly savory on the palate, this is a balanced Auslese that is not as lively, bright and saline on the finish as the Wehlener, but it is more textured, richer and possibly also deeper. 7.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in May 2023.

The 2020 Riesling Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Kabinett (Golden Capsule) opens with a deep, pure and complex bouquet with concentrated fruit and lemon aromas intermingled with delicate and coolish slate aromas. Full-bodied, crystalline and fresh on the palate, this is a pure, saline and terribly fresh but mouth-watering ZSU Kabinett with fine and precise acidity and a tight and tensioned finish that needs some years to refine. 7.5% stated alcohol. Block W is located in Faure, very close to the cooling breezes of False Bay on the Bredell farm and is my pick of the Mulderbosch Chenins in 2018. Intense, focused and mealy, with some added texture from 100% malolactic fermentation, lovely weight and concentration and a lingering, bone dry finish.

"The hardest wine to make," says Andrea Mullineux of this Chenin Blanc from a nutrition-poor vineyard on the Kasteelbeg. But the effort is certainly worth it. Showing aromas of white flowers and gunflint, it has amazing focus, salinity and depth with linear acidity and notes of green apple, kitchen spices and umami.

The latest in an impressive run of outstanding Chardonnays from this top Elgin estate - no mean feat in a vintage where some producers struggled with fructose levels - this is bigger and bolder than the 2017 release. More Meursault than Puligny-Montrachet perhaps, with some cream and cashew notes on the palate underpinned by racy acidity
