Best in Show - Those seeking out reds based on Cabernet Franc beyond their French home are, often enough, looking for a red wine which combines something of the structure and command of Cabernet Sauvignon but with more lift, grace and aromatic refinement. The red wine from this year's brace of South African Best In Show winners fills that role admirably. It's dark in colour, with refined, complex, raspberry and root-spice aromas in subtle and uninsistent style. Look out for bright, pure raspberry fruits on the palate with a further twist of liquorice and gentian. The structure comes more from the wine's quiet, limpid acidity than from any notable tannin presence, further unscoring that accessibility and responsiveness.

This is "just" the basic Cabernet Sauvignon from Christo Le Riche, but it's a brilliant wine in its own right. Using grapes from ten different vineyards across Stellenbosch in Firgrove, the Helderberg, Jonkershoek, Raithby and the Simonsberg, it's a masterclass in blending. Matured in 18% new wood, it's wonderfully pure and scented, all violet, tar, tobacco leaf and liquorice, with plush yet structured cassis, black cherry and Asian spice flavours and the backbone to age for another decade in bottle.

The 2020 Viognier The Age of Grace has a subtle, well-defined bouquet of detailed lemon sherbet, lemon thyme and crushed pebble scents, poised and, yes, graceful. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, and linear and quite steely toward the almost Chenin-like finish. This is not a flamboyant, Rhône-like Viognier – it’s is far more tensile and racy. It should age extremely well in bottle.

The 2018 Estate Reserve Syrah contains 50% whole-bunch fruit and is aged in 500- and 700-liter barrels, 30% new. It has an extremely pure, slightly floral bouquet of bright blueberry and black currant fruit infused with scents of crushed iris petals and violets, almost Burgundian in style. The palate is extremely well balanced with perfectly pitched acidity and filigreed tannins. There is an unerring sense of weightlessness about this Syrah, which is one of the most precise Lismore reds I have encountered over several years of tasting. Absolutely stunning.

The 2021 Syrah Estate Reserve, which comes from the vineyard most damaged by the fire in 2020, is 50% whole bunches and aged of 500- and 700-liter barrels, 25% new. The potent nose has raspberry coulis, blueberry and touches of cough candy, taking its time to settle in the glass and lose its initial exuberance. The palate is medium-bodied with finely chiseled, slightly chalky tannins. It’s fresh and vibrant, sapid towards the finish, with a long, Côte-Rôtie-like aftertaste and garrigue notes filtering through with time. This should be afforded a couple of years in bottle and will continue to evolve over the next 15-20 years. Just 12% alcohol, too.

Hands down the best Viognier in the country, the 2022 Estate Reserve Viognier is instantly impressive in the glass. It seduces and captivates with a delicate floral nose that overflows with aromas of just-ripe stone fruits and sweet citrus. Medium to full-bodied, the palate shows considerable weight with agile, succulent acidity before displaying an appropriate level of phenolic bitterness to keep things food friendly and fresh. The wine concludes with an elongated, ever-evolving finish that has me returning for more. Just under 1,600 bottles were produced. If you're a Viognier lover, you must seek out this bottling.

The 2022 Chardonnay Reserve comprises fruit from the Greyton homestead, which is oxidatively handled and fermented for 11 months in 500-liter barrels (25% new). After swirling to address the reduction, it reveals concentrated scents of dried honey, melted candle wax, orange blossom and a touch of grilled walnut. The palate is well-balanced with mineral-infused, slightly tropical fruit: quince and hints of guava that merge into a more mineral-driven taut finish. Quite a multi-faceted Chardonnay, this will age with style and panache. If that Corton-Charlemagne is a bit over-priced…and it probably is…then you know where to come.

W.O. Swartland. 44% Grenache Noir, 31% Cinsault and 25% Syrah. 80% whole-bunch fermentation. Whereas quite a few New Wave red wines sacrifice fruit depth for freshness, Lourens seems to achieve both. The nose shows top notes of lavender and fynbos before red and black berries, oliver, pepper and spice. The palate is medium bodied with fresh acidity and chalky tannins. Good fruit definition, lots of intricate flavours, the finish intensely savoury.

50% Chenin Blanc, 42% Verdelho and 8% Grenache Blanc. Roussanne has been dropped from the mix this year while some of the Chenin Blanc is from the Piekenierskloof Skuinskap vineyard – Lourens opting not to release this as a standalone wine as he felt he left picking too late. Pretty and enticing aromatics of pear, peach, citrus plus hints of potpourri and dried herbs and a little flinty reduction while the palate has a dense core of fruit and comes across as entirely seamless. This is establishing itself as one of the best Cape White Blends around.

The 2020 Riesling Graacher Himmelreich Auslese * (Golden Capsule) shows concentrated lemon fruit and crushed blue slate aromas with spicy notes. Just bottled in June, this Auslese is still pretty reductive, yet it shows its true elegance and finesse on the nose. Molitor's 2020 Riesling Graacher Himmelreich Kabinett (Green Capsule) is super clear, bright and intense on the utterly slatey, herbal and very delicate, even iodine and, with enough aeration, spectacular nose. The 2018 Riesling Wehlener Klosterberg Auslese *** (Green Capsule) is very clear and openly fruity on the concentrated and aromatic nose, with ripe and spicy stone fruit and lychee as well as spicy aromas with coolish notes of crushed gray slate and flowers. This is another 2018 that reminds me of the world's finest Gewürztraminers due to the flavors, richness, mild acidity and perfect mix of tropical fruit aromas, mineral spiciness and very fine tannins. The wine is sweet rather than medium-sweet, but its crystalline and elegant acidity and aromatic intensity make this a spectacularly great 2018 with greatly deposed power. The wine already tastes dangerously good today, but it will develop at least as gorgeous as the 2003s. This could end up as a giant one day. Tasted at the domain in September 2020.

34% Grenache Blanc from Piekenierskloof, 31% Verdelho from Stellenbosch, 21% Roussanne from Stellenboch and 15% Chenin Blanc sourced from both Stellenbosch and Swartland. On the nose , white peach, potpourri and dried herbs. The palate is light bodied and tightly wound with pure fruit, fresh acidity and a very dry finish. Has a lovely restraint about it.

Christian Eedes (95)

The 2020 Riesling Erdener Prälat Auslese *** (White Capsule) is super impressive on the deep and pure, highly concentrated, slightly minty and layered nose, with iodine, flint and very elegant slate aromas with ripe and lush stone fruit. Crystalline, refined and pristine on the palate, this is a powerful but even more energetic and tensioned Prälat with zesty lemon bitters on the enormously complex and sustainable finish that reveals very fine oak tannins. The Prälat is bone dry due to its spectacular sugar-free extract. 12.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine from AP 6 21 in July 2022.

Very elegant, fresh and salty on the palate, this is a savory, almost dry-finishing Auslese from the Graacher Himmelreich that is characterized by remarkably precise and sharp but ripe acidity that is intermingled with the saline taste and causes a salivating finish. Though still too young to full shine, this is a highly promising Auslese. 7.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine from AP 134 22 in July 2022.

Molitor's 2020 Riesling Graacher Himmelreich Kabinett (Green Capsule) is super clear, bright and intense on the utterly slatey, herbal and very delicate, even iodine and, with enough aeration, spectacular nose. Lush and round on the textured palate, this is an intense and juicy but most of all saline Kabinett that lifts everything and leads to an almost dry-tasting yet fruity and juicy finish. There is great precision and piquancy here; think of candied lime rind or maybe a mojito. This is an irresistible Kabinett from the Himmelreich in Graach and is one of the best in its category again. 9% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in July 2022.

The 2018 Riesling Wehlener Sonnenuhr Auslese *** (White Capsule) is bright and intense on the very elegant and refined yet aromatic and super ripe but elegant nose. On the palate, this is a rich and powerful, very intense and concentrated Riesling with a tight structure and a massive yet still not finessed or stimulating finish. The wine has remarkable finesse and salinity, yet it is still somewhat massive and square to really simulate. Never mind, the wine has time. Tasted at the domain in September 2020.

The 2021 Riesling Wehlener Sonnenuhr Auslese *** (Golden Capsule) is bright, pure and fresh on the still discreet but very delicate nose that shows perfectly ripe white fruit and deeper, finely weathered, flinty slate aromas. The wine is finely structured but delivers mouth-filling delicate fruit and is almost irresistible at this early stage. 7.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in May 2023.

The 2020 Riesling Wehlener Sonnenuhr Spätlese (White Capsule) is clear, pure, intense and refined, spicy and flinty on the nose that shows fully ripe, yellow-golden Riesling fruit combined with flinty/savory slate aromas. Lush and dense yet crystalline and refined on the palate, this is an elegant, very intense and saline, concentrated and substantial Sonnenuhr Spätlese that is, analytically and also sensorially, certainly an Auslese that reveals a concentrated, lemon-fresh, savory and stimulating bitter finish with great substance and class. This 2020 is remarkably complex and tensioned, but it has stimulating, zesty salinity and serious tannin structure. This impressive dry (or dry styled?) Spätlese will need another five to 10 years to open up and unfold its finesse and layers that it will easily keep for 50+ years, if cellared properly. 11.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine from AP 72 21 in July 2022.
