The 2017 Viré-Clessé, which will be bottled at the beginning of 2022, has a killer nose with an almost Germanic feel, intense nectarine, melon and damp earthy scents with just a hint of petrol. The 2017 is a little waxy in texture with orange rind, stem ginger and white pepper furnishing the very persistent finish. This is superb - a Viré-Clessé with genuine substance and longevity.Inc. Running from their gate by the Route Nationale to the same height as the Château de la Tour, the Grivots' vines are all in the lower half of the Clos. In hot years like 2017, humid soils can be an advantage, which appears to be the case for this stylish, poised, well-balanced grand cru bottling. The 2017 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru Très Vieilles Vignes has turned out even better than I anticipated, unfurling in the glass with a magical bouquet of cassis, plums and blackberries mingled with dark chocolate, spices, sweet soil tones, licorice and black truffle. Full-bodied, layered and multidimensional, it's extraordinarily sumptuous and concentrated, framed by velvety tannins that caress the palate, and underpinned by lively acids, concluding with a long and expansive finish. The 2017 Corton-Pougets Grand Cru has an attractive, wild strawberry, orange blossom and pomegranate bouquet, pure and charming and quite Chambolle-like in style. The palate is fleshy on the entry, delivering fine grip and decent red fruit laced with white pepper and graphite, but it tapers toward the finish, refusing to "kick on" and leaving you wanting more. The 2017 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru has a light and slightly earthy nose, a touch of orange pith emerging with time. The palate displays good weight and concentration, offering candied orange peel and lemon zest and turning a little peachy toward the finish, all underpinned by a fine bead of acidity and decent length.
