Complexity looms on the nose and a similar, sultry concentration follows on the palate. The whole, resolutely suave package is lifted by buoyant acidity. It is very "digestible", as the Bourguignons would say. Baked apples, plentiful sweet spice and bread crust linger on the finish. 2023-35

The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, a mixture of red and black fruit and touches of dark chocolate and tar. There is more elegance and terroir expression on the Les Duresses this year.

There is outstanding precision on the aftertaste, and that seems to be accentuated with aeration. I gave this a tepid reaction from barrel, but here in bottle, it received my highest score out of over two hundred 2017s. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting in Savigny-lès-Beaune.

In 2019, Bouchard emphasised the richness by picking this parcel last. Ripe apples, white flowers and even a touch of honey make their appearance on the nose, while the texture on the palate is unctuous and deep without being heavy. There is still enough freshness to keep this lively through the intensely long finish.

Crushed red berry fruit, cedar, mint, rose petal and orange zest are some of the notes that grace this exquisite but potent Barolo. Give the tannins a few years to soften.

I would prefer to give the 2016 a bit more time in bottle to allow it to shed some of its considerable baby fat.

    The 2005 Barolo Riserva 150 Anniversario Rocche-Villero is one of the standouts of a very impressive lineup of Barolos. It races out of the blocks with a layered nose of enticing black fruit laced with melted tar, wilted rose petals and a subtle brine note. Medium-bodied on the palate, delivering firm tannins and counterbalanced by a perfect line of acidity, the dark berry fruit laced with dark chocolate and a hint of fennel. Reassuringly long on the finish, this is one delicious and captivating Barolo. Tasted at the Vinous off-line dinner at La Trompette.

Firm refined tannins and bright acidity give it a structured finesse as well as balance.

    The 2017 Barolo is a terrific choice for drinking now and over the next decade or so. In 2017, Brovia's straight Barolo is quite floral and lifted in feel. As a reminder, the Brovia Barolo is a blend of all four sites the family bottles as vineyard designates, with an emphasis on the Brea cru. This mid-weight Barolo is all charm.

    Brovia's 2018 Barolo is a very good wine for the vintage and within its peer group. It naturally shows the modest structure of the year, but all the elements are nicely balanced. Sweet dried cherry, mint, cedar, tobacco and crushed leaves open nicely. I would prefer to drink the 2018 over the next handful of years. As always, the straight Barolo is a blend of 70% Brea and 30% a mix of the other sites in the range. It is very nicely done.

    Smoke, tar, earthiness and licorice add gorgeous dimensions of complexity in the 2010 Barolo Brea Vigna Ca’ Mia. Here, too, the flavors are remarkably bright and focused. The dark, brooding notes of Serralunga are very much present, but the 2010 impresses for its pure balance, harmony and class. Dried rose petals, spices, licorice and game add complexity on a huge finish supported by big, incisive tannins. This is another utterly vivid, dazzling Barolo from Brovia. Here, too, readers will note a slight name change.

Although not especially typical of its site, and a bit light relative to some recent vintages, the 2012 Ca' Mia is stunningly beautiful just the same.

    (with the 2010 release, this wine will say Brea Ca' Mia on the label): Bright red. Captivatingly fresh, primary aromas of raspberry, minerals and flowers are accented by a sappy note of blood orange; reminded me a bit of a topnotch Burgundy from Vosne or Chambolle. Sweet and thick but with lovely acidity giving the wine a strong impression of inner-mouth tension. A step up in density and fullness from the foregoing wines, with its Serralunga limestone pungency coming through loud and clear. Finishes very long and horizontal, with serious but well-buffered tannins and excellent menthol lift. Wonderfully elegant and perfumed Barolo from a south/southeast-facing vineyard that is spared the hottest afternoon sun.

    Lavender, mint, sage, smoke, tobacco and plums are all laced together in the 2011 Barolo Brea Vigna Ca'Mia. As always, the Ca'Mia is a decidedly vertical Barolo built on a spine of persistent tannin, but in 2011 there is a little bit of added polish that serves to soften the contours. Tucked off the main road, Brea remains one of the least well-known vineyards in Serralunga. The 2011 is a great wine to start exploring some of the nuances of this site. A huge finish that brings together power and voluptuousness captures the pure radiance of the year.

    Brovia’s 2008 Barolo Garblet Sue’ bursts from the glass with a heady array of black fruit, smoke, incense and licorice. The Garblet Sue’, from the Bricco Fiasco vineyard in Castiglione, is usually a much more linear, tense Barolo, but in 2008 the wine has gorgeous inner perfume allied to a level of pure juiciness that rounds out some of the rough edges that are at times present in this bottling. A huge finish laced with iron, asphalt and crushed rocks rounds things out in style. This is a super-classic Barolo from Brovia. Anticipated maturity: 2020-2040.

    Firm tannins support a core of bright red fruit, freshly cut flowers and crushed rocks in the 2010 Barolo Garblèt Sue’. Today some of the ferrous notes typical of this site are less obvious, as the fruit is incredibly rich and intense. Over time, though, it is the wine's pure energy that stands out most, another typical Garblèt Sue’ characteristic. This is one of the more polished vintages of the Garblèt Sue’ I can remember tasting. Iron, smoke, dark red fruit and a host of ferrous notes round out the huge, explosive finish.

    The 2012 Barolo Brea Vigna Ca' Mia shows a much more finessed side of this great Serralunga site rather than the power that is much more typical. Rose petal, lavender, mint, sweet red cherries, licorice and dried herbs are laced together in a feminine, gracious Barolo endowed with striking translucence and pure class. Although not especially typical of its site, and a bit light relative to some recent vintages, the 2012 Ca' Mia is stunningly beautiful just the same.

    (with the 2010 release, this wine will say Brea Ca' Mia on the label): Bright red. Captivatingly fresh, primary aromas of raspberry, minerals and flowers are accented by a sappy note of blood orange; reminded me a bit of a topnotch Burgundy from Vosne or Chambolle. Sweet and thick but with lovely acidity giving the wine a strong impression of inner-mouth tension. A step up in density and fullness from the foregoing wines, with its Serralunga limestone pungency coming through loud and clear. Finishes very long and horizontal, with serious but well-buffered tannins and excellent menthol lift. Wonderfully elegant and perfumed Barolo from a south/southeast-facing vineyard that is spared the hottest afternoon sun.

    Lavender, mint, sage, smoke, tobacco and plums are all laced together in the 2011 Barolo Brea Vigna Ca'Mia. As always, the Ca'Mia is a decidedly vertical Barolo built on a spine of persistent tannin, but in 2011 there is a little bit of added polish that serves to soften the contours. Tucked off the main road, Brea remains one of the least well-known vineyards in Serralunga. The 2011 is a great wine to start exploring some of the nuances of this site. A huge finish that brings together power and voluptuousness captures the pure radiance of the year.

    Brovia’s 2008 Barolo Garblet Sue’ bursts from the glass with a heady array of black fruit, smoke, incense and licorice. The Garblet Sue’, from the Bricco Fiasco vineyard in Castiglione, is usually a much more linear, tense Barolo, but in 2008 the wine has gorgeous inner perfume allied to a level of pure juiciness that rounds out some of the rough edges that are at times present in this bottling. A huge finish laced with iron, asphalt and crushed rocks rounds things out in style. This is a super-classic Barolo from Brovia. Anticipated maturity: 2020-2040.

  • Brovia Barolo Garblet Sue 2010 (3x150cl)

    Firm tannins support a core of bright red fruit, freshly cut flowers and crushed rocks in the 2010 Barolo Garblèt Sue’. Today some of the ferrous notes typical of this site are less obvious, as the fruit is incredibly rich and intense. Over time, though, it is the wine's pure energy that stands out most, another typical Garblèt Sue’ characteristic. This is one of the more polished vintages of the Garblèt Sue’ I can remember tasting. Iron, smoke, dark red fruit and a host of ferrous notes round out the huge, explosive finish.
