Showing blackberries and plums with underbrush and strong minerality, this is a Corton with a lot of personality. The tannins are nicely textured while the acidity seems to melt into the soft fruit core. Latour receives the "toleration" of keeping "Ch teau" in front of the appellation name. INAO has been cracking down elsewhere on all sorts of matters seemingly simple like this, but I do hope Latour gets to keep this name given its heritage at the property as it was the great-grandfather of Fabrice Latour who purchased the vines after the phylloxera crisis. 2023-32Inc. A layer of resinous oak shades the cherry and raspberry fruit. Spice and mineral accents show up, but for now this is austere. Should come together nicely, as the finish shows promise. Best from 2017 through 2030. 200 cases made.Inc. VAT£583.24 -

One of the highlights of this tasting was the 2013 Corton-Renardes Grand Cru, a beautiful wine that bursts from the glass with a surprisingly expressive bouquet of wild berries, plums and spices, complemented by savory bass notes of dark chocolate, game bird and dried ceps. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, ample and fleshy, with terrific concentration, racy acids and a long, penetrating finish. The combination of ultra-refined tannins and mouthwatering cut makes for a very elegant style of Corton-Renardes this year, and it will delight Burgundy purists.Inc. VAT£815.09 -

The 2017 Corton-Renardes Grand Cru wafts from the glass with a complex bouquet of cherries, raspberries, forest floor, warm spices and a deft application of cedary new oak. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, velvety and layered, with a deep and concentrated core of fruit, framed by racy acids and powdery tannins. The finish is long and penetrating. Unusually approachable for a Gaunoux Renardes, this is nonetheless constructed for a long and rewarding life.Inc. VAT£749.09 -

Like the Bourgogne there is a mentholated element to the ripe aromas of poached plum and mix of various red and dark cherry scents that convey a whisper of the sauvage. The highly seductive, indeed suave medium weight plus flavors that envelope the palate with sappy dry extract that does a fine job of buffering the very firm tannic spine shaping the wonderfully long, dusty, austere and lengthy finish that also displays just a barely perceptible trace of warmth. Lovely stuff and in contrast to several of the preceding wines, this could be reasonably approached after 7 to 8 years though it should repay up to twenty.Inc. VAT£815.09 -

An exemplar of legendary Burgundy wines, the Prince Florent Merode Corton Bressandes 2006 is unparalleled in viticultural elegance. Hand-crafted from old-vine, Grand Cru plots in the Corton Bressandes climat, this exquisite vintage hails from the esteemed house of Merode, a family-owned winery with a rich heritage dating back to the 19th century. Though steeped in tradition, the estate employs a combination of ancient and modern oenological techniques, sensitively marrying hand-harvesting with low-impact mechanisation. The result is this magnificent Pinot Noir, matured in French oak barrels, exuding profound nuances of ripe red fruit, harmonised with subtle oak undertones. It's characterised by a complex aromatic profile. On the palate, it reveals firm yet fine-grained tannins and extraordinary depth, with a wonderfully persistent finish. Vinous (92)
The 2016 Ridge Pinot Noir comes from vines located at 325 meters, the highest that Hannes Storm farms, east-facing with a prevailing southeasterly wind that creates a cooler site and longer hangtime. It was matured in 25% new oak for 11 months. It is more youthful in appearance compared to the Ignis, the nose very cohesive with black cherry, raspberry preserve, crushed stone and light wilted rose petal aromas. The fresh, poised palate is medium-bodied with crisp acidity and perhaps the edgiest tannins of Storm’s 2016s. Long with a touch of spice on the finish, this is an excellent Pinot Noir. It’s a shame only 250 cases were produced.Inc. VAT£256.84 -

Hannes Storm's whites have shifted up a gear in 2022 and are fast approaching the same level as his lauded Pinot Noirs. This stylish Chardonnay showcases grapes from a south-east facing parcel at 330 metres on the Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge. Fermented in a combination of 32% new barrels and 10% clay amphoras, it's a chiselled, pithy, focused white with lots of zip, lemongrass and orange zest flavours and subtle aromatic spices.Inc. As its name suggests, this hails from a cool shale site on the Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge, planted as recently as 2009. It combines the density of Vrede with the perfume of Ignis, making it Hannes Storm’s most complete Pinot, with floral scents, red cherry and raspberry fruit, savoury tannins and focused acidity.Inc. Ridge is often the most backward of Hannes Storm's trio of remarkable single vineyard Pinot Noirs, sourced from an east-facing, high-density planting at 330 metres at La Vierge on the Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge. Plum, black cherry and a hint of graphite are underpinned by plenty of grip, backbone and intensity. One to tuck away for a while.Inc. VAT£346.84 -
Wine Advocate (93-95)
The 2015 Corton-Rognet Grand Cru has a fragrant bouquet with blackberry, raspberry preserve, crushed rose petals and just a hint of blood orange, quite sophisticated in style for a Corton-Rognet. The palate is medium-bodied with juicy tannin on the entry. This does not shortchange you on fruit: blackberry, raspberry and a pinch of white pepper, leading to a structured and quite grippy finish that like Taupernot-Merme's other 2015s, manages to retain impressive freshness and elegance. It has an incredibly long aftertaste, over a minute in the mouth and you can still feel this. Highly recommended.Inc. VAT£900.04 -
Vinous (93-95)
The 2020 Corton-Rognet Grand Cru has a very well-delineated bouquet, very terroir-driven, crushed stone infusing the red fruit a touch of white pepper. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, fresh acidity, taut and crisp, gently building towards quite a complex finish with touches of Early Grey infusing the red fruit, cracked black pepper on the aftertaste. Excellent.Inc. VAT£1,553.09 -

An attractively layered nose offers up notes of violet, plum, smoked meat hints and plenty of warm earth character to the wild dark berry fruit aromas. There is excellent volume to the ripe, intense and powerful large-scaled flavors that exhibit fine intensity on the powerful, balanced and vibrant finish that delivers its usual fine length. This isn't quite a robust as it usually is though it's a big wine all the same and will require an extended cellar siesta. Drink: 2023+Inc. VAT£568.84
