Vinous - Neal Martin (93-95)

The 2021 Gevrey-Chambertin Aux Combottes 1er Cru, which was made with 60% whole bunches, has a well-defined bouquet, quite tertiary in style with plenty of forest floor and pencil box aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with finely-chiselled tannins, one of the most mineral-driven in Dujac's range, precise and detailed, a pinch of spice, harmonious and quite persistent on the finish. A Combottes that feels like a Swiss watch - precise, precise, precise.

Smelling this great Chateauneuf is like gazing into a deep chasm. Amazing complexity with aromas ranging from black raspberries through to candied orange, but also notes of raw meat and licorice. Super-concentrated, super-structured, but also more elegant than a wine built on this monumental scale can theoretically be. Extremely long, complete finish. A cuvee of 80% grenache, 10% syrah and 10% mourvedre. Drinkable now, but best from 2025.

The 2016 Gevrey-Chambertin Lavaut Saint-Jacques 1er Cru has certainly stepped up in intensity since I last tasted it. Redcurrant, cranberry, juniper berries and just a touch of mint, fine delineation with fine focus. The palate is medium-bodied with saturated tannins, perfectly judged acidity, a touch of allspice and white pepper, fanning out gloriously on the expansive finish. Time to raise my previous score. Healthy medium red. Slightly stunted but pure aromas of red berries and black cherry are less exuberant than those of the Champeaux. Also more restrained and tightly wound in the mouth, but with vibrant acidity and a sensation of peppery grip giving the wine terrific inner-mouth energy. Classic 2013 in its tautness and cut. The 2016 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Cherbaudes is excellent, unfurling in the glass with a complex bouquet of dark chocolate, cassis, wild berries and plums. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, deep and concentrated, with a layered core of crunchy fruit, fine structuring tannins and a long, sapid finish. While this is very elegant in style this year, it has more than enough substance to evolve in bottle for two decades or more.

The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Cazetiers 1er Cru comes from 1.47 hectares that cover the four soil types within the vineyard; Magnien informed me that he is the only grower who has all four. The vines are Pinot Magnien and some are up to 100 years old. A gorgeous bouquet of pure black cherries, blueberry and light violet aromas bursts from the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins and a fine bead of acidity, and lightly spiced, leading into a harmonious, persistent, mineral-driven finish. This should evolve into a gorgeous Les Cazetiers.

(from a .33 ha holding of ~55-year-old vines). A cooler and airier nose combines notes of red and dark currant with those of spice, earth and a whiff of game. The markedly more finely textured flavors exude an almost pungent minerality on the impressively persistent and beautifully well-balanced finale. This is pretty much textbook ESJ with its combination of power and finesse. In a word, excellent. (91-93)/2029+

Wine Advocate (92-94)

Apparently, there's no Les Celestins in 2013, which was a challenging vintage in the Southern Rhône. That said, the barrel we tasted of the 2013 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Marie Beurrier was a bit light but elegant and silky in texture, with pomegranate-like red fruit and gentle spice.

Vinous (93-95)

Burghound (91-93)

(from a .33 ha holding of ~55-year-old vines). A cooler and airier nose combines notes of red and dark currant with those of spice, earth and a whiff of game. The markedly more finely textured flavors exude an almost pungent minerality on the impressively persistent and beautifully well-balanced finale. This is pretty much textbook ESJ with its combination of power and finesse. In a word, excellent. (91-93)/2029+
