The 2019 Vosne-Romanée Les Beaux Monts 1er Cru, matured in 80% new oak, has a very detailed, focused bouquet of blackberry, briar, raspberry jam and light orange peel aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with a slightly tarry opening, a smear of dark chocolate combining nicely with the dark berry fruit, but it is unapologetically backward and surly on the finish compared with the Echézeaux or the Vosne Les Chaumes, so give it some serious cellaring.

A deep bright purple. The nose has the characteristic (of Brûlées) smoky struck flint note to it, which adds complexity to the red fruit which is as abundant here as the other wines. Lush in the middle then a structure which tames the extrovert nature, a good point of acidity alongside ripe tannins, and some darker fruit to finish. Potentially extremely fine. It is one of the more reticent cuvées on the nose this year, reluctantly unfolding to reveal more tertiary red berry fruit laced with garrigue and iodine. Good complexity, but these aromatics will need time to open. The palate is medium-bodied with supple, lithe tannins. (from a .33 ha holding of ~55-year-old vines). Once again, the wood treatment is discreet but not invisible on the ripe and very fresh aromas of poached plum, cassis and pretty floral wisps. The racy, detailed and intense middle weight flavors possess a more sophisticated mouthfeel thanks to the fine-grained tannins, all wrapped in a youthfully austere, balanced and impressively long finale. Excellent. (91-94)/2032+

  • Heresztyn Mazzini Gevrey Chambertin Vv 2015 (6x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (90-92)

The 2015 Gevrey Chambertin Vieilles Vignes includes 55% whole bunch fruit and it was matured in 30% new French oak. It offers bright redcurrant and cranberry scents on the nose that is well defined and offers plenty of freshness and vitality. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp tannin, structured in style with more crunchy black fruit here than the aromatics, sous-bois and white pepper towards the finish. This is premier cru in quality—excellent.

  • Heresztyn Mazzini Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Champonnets 2017 (12x75cl)

    Vinous (92-94)

The 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Champonnet 1er Cru comes from around 55-60 years old vines, matures in 30% new oak and 70% whole bunches. This has a ripe and refined bouquet with hints of blue fruit developing in the glass, very floral in style. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannin. This feels linear and precise, gradually building towards a very minerally and tensile finish. Great persistency here, a superb Gevrey-Chambertin Les Champonnets.

  • Heresztyn-Mazzini Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru La Perriere 2019 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (92-94)

The 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin La Perrière 1er Cru contains 50% whole bunch and is matured in 30% new oak (Billon and Chassin cooperages). The very cohesive bouquet features brambly red berry fruit, briar, black tea and undergrowth scents. The palate is medium-bodied with a peppery entry, fine acidity and a Morey-like structure toward the finish. While not amazingly long, it is very nicely focused and exudes breeding.

  • Heresztyn-Mazzini Gevrey-Chambertin Cuvee Les Jouises VV 2015 (6x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (91-93)

The 2015 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Jouises Vieilles Vignes underwent ageing in slightly less new oak than the regular Vieilles Vignes at 25%, and includes 55% whole bunch fruit. It has a crisp and well-defined bouquet with hints of crushed rose petal infusing the red berry fruit—cranberry and a hint of juniper. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, something almost a little Oriental here, a tang of hoisin tincturing the finish that feels harmonious and sustained in the mouth. This is an involving Gevrey-Chambertin that will age with style.

  • Hubert Lignier Gevrey-Chambertin Les Seuvrees 2018 (6x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (90+)

Lignier's 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Seuvrées is showing nicely in bottle, unwinding in the glass with aromas of plums, cassis, sweet soil tones, licorice, dark chocolate and spices. Medium to full-bodied, deep and muscular, it's concentrated and tightly wound, with a chassis of rich, powdery tannins and a lively spine of acidity. This will require patience.

  • Hudelot-Noellat Vosne-Romanee 1er Cru Les Beaumonts 2016 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (95)

The 2016 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru has a slightly meaty/feral bouquet, just a hint of gaminess that might become more conspicuous with bottle age. Otherwise I find this well defined and with flattering red cherry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin. There is a fine bead of acidity here, a pleasant fleshy mouthfeel towards the finish and a residual salinity that beckons you back for the next sip. This represents another impressive wine from Charles Van Canneyt. Tasted blind at the 2016 Burgfest tasting.

  • Hudelot-Noellat Vosne-Romanee 1er Cru Les Suchots 2018 (6x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (93-95)

The 2018 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Suchots is showing brilliantly this year, wafting from the glass with a deep-pitched bouquet of cassis, blackberries, spices and dark chocolate. On the palate, it's full-bodied, rich and enveloping, its textural attack segueing into a deep and layered core, concluding with a long and penetrating finish.

  • Hudelot-Noellat Vosne-Romanee 1er Cru Les Suchots 2020 (3x75cl)

    Vinous (94-96)

The 2020 Vosne-Romanée Les Suchots 1er Cru has a fragrant bouquet, for this writer, demonstrating a little more precision and mineralité compared to the Les Beaumonts. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, more saline than the Les Beaumonts with a very persistent finish. Superb.

  • Jane Eyre Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Corbeaux 2019 (12x75cl)

    Jancis Robinson (17.5)

Mid garnet. Heady mushrooms and violet nose. This is extraordinarily concentrated and tastes like a grand cru. Wow! Classic, top-quality red burgundy that's so vibrant, rich and yet elegant. Really rather thrilling. Perhaps the most exciting 2019 I have tasted in London.

  • Jean Grivot Vosne-Romanee 1er Cru Aux Brulees 2021 (3x75cl)

    Vinous (93-95)

The 2021 Vosne-Romanée Aux Brûlées 1er Cru has an exquisitely-delineated bouquet with black plum and raspberry fruit that unfold with each swirl of the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with a slightly flinty opening, compact, quite peppery with a deepening and rather grippy finish. There is something sultry about this Aux Brûlées, a Premier Cru that will repay 4-5 years in the cellar.

  • Jean Grivot Vosne-Romanee 1er Cru Les Beaux Monts 2018 (3x75cl)

    Decanter (95)

Always one of Etienne and Mathilde Grivot's stand-out Premier Cru reds, this is not the most immediate of their cuvées at a young age, often displaying some grip and tannic backbone as well as a hint of meaty reduction, but the fruit concentration and depth is remarkable here, supported by chalky minerality and scented 30% new wood. Wonderfully patrician and well-structured.

  • Jean Grivot Vosne-Romanee 1er Cru Les Rouges 2019 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (92-94)

The 2019 Vosne-Romanée Les Rouges 1er Cru has "grown up a lot over the last 10 years," according to Etienne Grivot. It is one of the more reticent cuvées on the nose this year, reluctantly unfolding to reveal more tertiary red berry fruit laced with garrigue and iodine. Good complexity, but these aromatics will need time to open. The palate is medium-bodied with supple, lithe tannins. Quite compact at the moment, this has good grip and a saline, marine-influenced finish that fans out beautifully. A succinct, understated Les Rouge that will give 20-plus years of pleasure.

  • Jean Grivot Vosne-Romanee 1er Cru Les Suchots 2017 (6x75cl)

    Decanter (95)

Always one of my favourite Vosne premiers crus from Mathilde and Etienne Grivot, this textured, stylish, deftly oaked red has all the most appealing features of the 2017 vintage, with lots of sumptuous, summer-pudding fruit, filigree tannins and a foundation of acidity. It's deceptively forward, as this has the minerality and focus to age.
